Mumbai, July 05: Pooja Batra, who starred in films like Virasat, Haseena Maan Jayegi etc., maybe missing from the Bollywood scene after she tied the knot with hubby Dr. Ahluwalia; however she still continues to make her presence felt in Bollywood in a rather unique way.

At the previews of Kambakkht Ishq which took place yesterday, viewers were surprised to see Pooja’s name being featured in the opening credits of the film. Considering that Pooja has been missing from the Bollywood action for a while now, we decided to find out why she was being thanked by the makers.

Mumbai, July 05: If the original cast of “Short Kut – The Con Is On” would have remained intact, audiences would have seen Anil Kapoor playing the role that Akshaye Khanna now essays. Also, Arshad was a late entry into the project as he finally got the part written for Akshaye.

“Yes, the film did see some casting changes though all of it happened before it went on floors. Akshaye was always the first choice for the film and he was on board immediately. After ‘Gandhi My Father’, it was but natural that he acts in my next production as well, ” Anil told.

Love Aaj Kal was not all that fun for Deepika, Saif

US woman accuses Indian priest of sexual abuse

New York, July 05: A 20-year-old woman sued the Catholic diocese of Crookston this week, alleging that in 2004, when she was 15, her parish priest, Reverend Joseph Jeyapaul, sexually abused her in the Blessed Sacrament Church in Greenbush, Minnesota.

The Crookston diocese, like the Roman Catholic Church in many other parts of the West, has been dealing with a shortage of priests by importing clerics from India. Jeyapaul was a manpower quick-fix and worked in the US diocese less than a year before returning to India in September 2005.

African student thrashed in Delhi to avenge Oz attacks

New Delhi, July 05: Agitated India may be protesting against racial attacks in Australia, but Delhi doesn’t seem to be any better for foreigners.

As a large crowd of shoppers looked on, a group of youngsters in the national capital pounced upon an African student last week and brutally attacked him, saying they were taking revenge for the Australian attacks.

The city police are yet to make any breakthrough in investigating the incident.

Jeddah-Mumbai flight tyres burst on landing, passengers safe

Mumbai, July 05: Passengers aboard a Saudia airliner on a Jeddah-Mumbai flight had a scare when its tyres burst during landing at Mumbai airport today evening, an official said.

The Saudia flight, SV-744, was landing around 6.30 p.m. in poor visibility conditions – upto 500 metres only – at the main runway, when the tyres burst.

Following the emergency, airport authorities immediately ordered the runway (0927) to be closed.

They made arrangements to tow away the aircraft but failed on account of the heavy load.

Serena beats Venus, wins Wimbledon

London, July 05: Serena Williams beat her sister Venus 7-6 (7/3), 6-2 in the Wimbledon 2009 final on Saturday to record her third win in the biggest tennis event.

The victory added to her 2002 and 2003 wins at the All England Club and shattered Venus’s hopes of a hat-trick of titles and sixth overall which would have taken her level with Billie Jean King.

The sisters have between them eight Wimbledon singles titles now.

Saturday’s final was the fourth all-Williams title match-up at Wimbledon and eighth in all Grand Slams.

Gay sex should not be legalised at any cost: Lalu

Patna, July 05: RJD chief Lalu Prasad on Saturday denounced Delhi High Court’s ruling decriminalising gay sex and said the Centre should appeal against the judgement in the Supreme Court.

“Gay sex should not be legalised at any cost and the Centre should appeal against the verdict in the Supreme Court. I am dead against legalisation of gay sex and will strongly raise the issue in Parliament. Section 377 of the IPC should not be amended,” Prasad said.

North Korea’s missile launches ‘not helpful’: US

Washington, July 05: The United States Saturday called North Korea’s “possible” missile launches “not helpful” but stopped short of confirming them or calling them a violation of UN sanctions.
“We’re waiting until we have all the facts about the violation,” State Department press officer Karl Duckworth told DPA.

Both South Korea and Japan have condemned the firings as violations of UN sanctions, the most recent of which was passed last month in reaction to Pyongyang’s test explosion of a nuclear bomb.

At least 7 police killed in Russia’s Ingushetia

Moscow, July 04: At least seven members of the Chechen police force were killed when their car came under fire in the neighbouring Russian region of Ingushetia, Russian news agencies reported.

The Interfax news agency quoted security sources as saying that seven police had been killed while the RIA-Novosti and ITAR-TASS agencies said that eight had lost their lives.

The vehicle came under grenade and gun fire as it was travelling on a road in Ingushetia at around 0530 GMT and burst into flames, the news agencies said.

Lackluster trading across Gulf bourses

Dubai, July 04: Telecom operator Zain surged to lift the Kuwait index yesterday and Oman’s benchmark rallied as new index weightings were introduced, but trading was lackluster across the Gulf Arab region.

Dubai’s index rose 1.4 percent, Bahrain made its largest gains for two weeks with a 0.5 percent rise and Kuwait edged 0.2 percent higher after a late rally. Egypt’s benchmark climbed 2.8 percent on the final day of the Egyptian fiscal year.

Accidents cost SR26bn a year: Official

Jeddha, July 04: The growing number of road accidents in the Kingdom causes heavy human and economic losses to the country. According to one official, the annual costs of treating accident victims are enough to build three refineries.

As many as 485,931 accidents took place on the Kingdom’s roads last year, killing 6,458 people and injuring 36,486. The number of accidents has been found to increase during the summer vacation.

Harmison defends Flintoff after media backlash

Worcester, July 04: England fast bowler Steve Harmison is certain his friend Andrew Flintoff will rebound from his disciplinary issues this week in time for the Ashes.

Flintoff, England’s leading all-rounder, was reprimanded by team officials and heavily criticized in media after he missed the bus that was taking the team to a war memorial site in Flanders, Belgium on Saturday while on a team-bonding trip.
