Government studying ideas to cut stress in military

The government is studying recommendations on how to manage stress among young army officers, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said Friday.

The minister told the Lok Sabha that the government has ordered a study into the stress level encountered by the young officers.

The Defence Institute of Psychological Research (DIPR), a laboratory of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), undertook a study on “factors causing distress among young officers of Indian Army”, he said.

CWG: Malaika wins India silver in 10m air pistol

Shooter Malaika Goel won India its fourth silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, finishing second behind Singapore’s Shun Xie Teo in the women’s 10-metre air pistol at the Barry Buddon Shooting Centre here Friday.

With a total of 197.1 points, the 16-year-old gave India its first medal from shooting at the Glasgow Games.

Canada’s Dorothy Ludwig took bronze.

Meanwhile, former World No.1 Heena Sidhu finished a disappointing seventh with a score of 95.8 points in the same event.

Myanmar’s third ethnic summit begins

The third Myanmar ethnic summit began Friday in the country’s northernmost Kachin state.

The three-day summit of ethnic leaders at the headquarters of the Kachin Independence Organisation (KIO) came after peace negotiators of the Myanmar government and ethnic armed groups adopted their second draft in Yangon in May, Xinhua reported.

A 16-member Leading Committee for the Third Ethnic Summit, led by chairman of Kayin National Union (KNU), Gen. Saw Mutu Say Poe, was formed Thursday, a day ahead of the summit.

Sonam, Fawad to make ‘Entertainment Ke Liye…’ finale ‘Khoobsurat’

“Khoobsurat” actors Sonam Kapoor and Fawad Khan will lend glamour to the finale episode of reality show “Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega” as part of the promotions of their forthcoming movie.

A source told IANS that the duo will shoot for the Sony Entertainment Television show Sunday. The finale episode will be telecast Aug 7.

Their visit on the show’s set will also be made special as they will launch a new song “Engine ki patri” from “Khoobsurat”, a remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s 1980 hit of the same name.

The new film is directed by Shashanka Ghosh.

BJP blames Mamata government for encephalitis deaths

Ukrainian cabinet appoints acting PM

The Ukrainian cabinet Friday appointed Deputy Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman as acting prime minister, one day after Arseny Yatsenyuk announced his resignation from the post.

Groysman will serve as acting prime minister until parliament elects a new interim head of the cabinet, Xinhua reported citing the government’s press service.

According to the Ukrainian Constitution, only parliament has the power to dismiss the prime minister by voting within 10 days after receiving a written resignation request.

DRDO to open centres in academic institutes

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) plans to set up advanced technology centres in prominent academic institutes including IITs, parliament was told Friday.

There will be one centre in IIT-Bombay for research in advanced propulsion technologies and next generation aero engine technologies, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley told the Lok Sabha.

Another centre at Jadavpur University in Kolkata will work on “Unmanned Autonomous Soldier-Assist Technologies”, he said.

Biocon net up nine percent in Q1

India’s biotech major Biocon Ltd. reported net profit of Rs.103 crore for the first quarter (April-June) of fiscal 2014-15, registering nine percent year-on-year (YoY) growth from Rs.94 crore in the same quarter last year.

In a regulatory filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Friday, the listed firm said income from total sales grew marginally, just three percent, YoY to Rs.719 crore this quarter (Q1) from Rs.694 crore in the same period last year.

Of the total sales, bio-pharmaceuticals generated Rs.547 crore and contract research services Rs.172 crore.

Indian vessels protect fishermen: Jaitley

Navy and Coast Guard ships are deployed continuously in Palk Bay off Tamil Nadu to protect Indian fisherman from attacks on the sea, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said Friday.

The vessels also seek to check illegal activities in the sea, the minister told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

Jaitley said the Indian government had repeatedly told Sri Lanka to ensure that its navy “acts with restraint and our fishermen found in the Sri Lankan waters are treated in a humane manner”.

Wipro net up 30 percent in Q1, projects higher revenue for Q2

India’s third largest IT firm Wipro Ltd. posted net profit of Rs.2,118 crore (approx $352 mn) for 2014-15’s first quarter (April-June), registering 30 percent growth year-on-year (YOY) under the Indian accounting standard, while projecting an average higher revenue of $1.8 billion from its global IT services business for the second quarter.

In a regulatory filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) Thursday, the global software major said its total revenue for the quarter under review increased 14 percent YoY to Rs.11,136 crore.

Bengal student attacked with acid inside home

A woman college student suffered grievous injuries Thursday in an acid attack by an unidentified assailant inside her home in West Bengal’s Burdwan district, police said.

The crime took place in Parapukur area of Burdwan town.

When the door bell rang around 10 a.m., the woman – who was alone at home then – opened the door. The assailant hurled the acid and ran away.

The student was admitted at the Burdwan Medical College Hospital.

Last month, a middle-aged woman suffered burn injuries when a man threw acid on her face at Chittaranjan railway station in the district.

AirAsia India to fly to Jaipur and Chandigarh

Budget passenger carrier AirAsia India Thursday said it will start its operations in North India from Sep 5 next with flights to Jaipur and Chandigarh.

The airline will start daily flights from Bangalore to Jaipur, and Bangalore to Chandigarh from Sep 5.

“Starting flights to Jaipur and Chandigarh was a strategic decision since we wanted to accelerate our operations in North, considering the demand for our services,” said Mittu Chandilya, chief executive, AirAsia India.

Pakistan denies breaching Kashmir truce

Pakistan Thursday denied New Delhi’s allegations that its military was violating the ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir in a bid to push militants into the Indian state.

“We do not accept such allegations and reject them,” Dawn online quoted Foreign Secretary Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry as saying.

According to the report, an Indian general said Wednesday that the Indian Army was fighting the biggest group of infiltrators who had sneaked into Jammu and Kashmir from Pakistan.

Haqqani Network being targeted in operation: Pakistan

Pakistan Thursday said the country’s security forces are targeting all armed groups including the Haqqani Network in the ongoing major offensive in North Waziristan tribal region.

The comments came a day after Afghan intelligence officials said that Pakistani forces have not yet taken any action against the Haqqani Network, blamed for recent deadly attacks in Afghanistan, Xinhua reported.

Afghanistan claims that the Haqqani Network had been using North Waziristan as their base for planning attacks across the border into Afghanistan.

India’s only individual Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra has said the 2014 Glasgow would be his last Commonwealth Games.

“Tom I will compete in my 5th cwg. This will be my last appearance at the games Hope to have some fun. Cont,” tweeted Bindra, who gave India the first individual Olympic gold medal in Beijing for the 10m air rifle event.

Bindra, who has eight Commonwealth Games medals, said he has cherished the journey that started as a 15-year-old in Kuala Lumpur.

Algerian plane with 119 on board missing, search on

An aircraft belonging to Algeria’s national airline, Air Algerie, with 119 people on board, disappeared early Thursday, 50 minutes after takeoff from Ouagadougou Airport in Burkina Faso, sparking a frantic search operation by French and Algerian air force jets.

The plane was reported missing over the Malian region of Gao, some 500 km south of the Algerian border, Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal told reporters on the sidelines of a parliament session.

According to an Air Algerie statement, there are 112 passengers and seven crew members on the missing plane, Xinhua reported.
