City bus service for women launched in Guwahati

The district administration and the transport department in Guwahati recently launched an exclusive bus service for women. The bus service was flagged off from Judges’ field in Guwahati by Assam Chief Secretary Jitesh Khosla. Initially, eight buses will operate on different routes across the city from 7-11 a.m. and from 3-8 p.m. every day. The buses equipped with CCTV cameras will have women constables and conductors on duty.

Missing Algeria plane: Wreckage found in Mali

The wreckage of Algerian flight AH 5017 has reportedly been found in Mali. According to the BBC, the plane along with 116 people on board, lost all contacts with the control room 50 minutes after it took off from Ouagadougou on Thursday morning. The plane was flying from Burkina Faso to Algiers and had to deviate from its course due to a sandstorm. The Malian state television confirmed that the plane wreck was found in the village of Boulikessi in Mali.

The Islamist militant group, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), has allegedly asked families in Iraq to have their daughters undergo female genital mutilation or face retribution. According to The Guardian, Jacqueline Badcock, UN”s deputy humanitarian coordinator in Iraq, has claimed on Thursday that almost 4 million women and girls aged 11-46 in Iraq face the risk of genital mutilation following the fatwa issued by ISIS, which aims at preventing immorality in society.

Israeli attack on UN school in Gaza kills 13

About 13 people have been killed and 200 have been injured in an Israeli attack on a UN-run school in Gaza which was being used as a shelter by Palestinians. According to the BBC, the school, located in the north-east city of Beit Hanoun, was sheltering several Palestinian families since Israel launched an offensive against Hamas on July 8. Jordan shoots down drone near Syrian border

Jordanian Armed Forces Friday said they shot down an unmanned aircraft near the Syrian border.

According to military sources, the drone was spotted near the Zaatari camp for Syrian refugees, Xinhua reported.

The aircraft flew in from across the Syrian border, officials said.

It is the first time that a drone entered Jordanian space.

Bengal encephalitis toll mounts, three health officials suspended

Blaming health officials in north Bengal for keeping the higher-ups in the dark about the spread of encephalitis, the West Bengal government Friday suspended three senior officials even as three more people died of the disease since Thursday night, taking the toll to 113.

Suspension notices were slapped on Darjeeling Chief Medical Officer (Health) Subir Bhowmik, his Jalpaiguri counterpart Jagannath Sarkar and North Bengal Medical College and Hospital superintendent Amarendranath Sarkar, Minister of State for Health Chandrima Bhattacharya told IANS.

McDonald’s Japan withdraws chicken products of Chinese origin

The Japanese subsidiary of McDonald’s Friday announced the withdrawal of all its chicken products sourced from China, following the expired meat scandal that led to the closure of Chinese meat processing firm Husi.

Japan McDonald’s, one of the two Japanese companies affected by the case, will replace poultry products of Chinese origin with others from Thailand in order to regain consumer confidence, said its president Sarah Casanova in a statement.

Adverse weather kills 50 soldiers in Siachen

Fifty Indian soldiers have died in Siachen since the start of 2011 due to adverse weather, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said Friday.

The minister said landslides, floods, avalanches and harsh climatic conditions killed 24 soldiers in 2011, 12 in 2012, 10 in 2013 and four until July 20 this year.

India and Pakistan dispute the ownership of Siachen.

Jaitley said Indian troops deployed in the icy heights “were suitably equipped, trained and organized to face the operational challenges and carry out their mandated tasks”.

How malaria parasite resists key trial drug

Researchers have uncovered a way the malaria parasite becomes resistant to a key clinical trial drug.

The parasite that causes malaria makes a class of molecules called isoprenoids.

These play multiple roles in keeping organisms healthy, whether plants, animals or bacteria.

In malaria, the investigational drug fosmidomycin blocks isoprenoid synthesis, killing the parasite. But over time, the drug often becomes less effective.

Lucknow woman’s family stages sit-in, demands CBI probe

The family of a Lucknow woman, who was murdered last week, Friday began an indefinite sit-in here, trashing police investigations and demanding the case be handed over to the CBI.

Alleging that there was “more to it than met the eye”, the family junked the Uttar Pradesh government’s claim that so far they had not made any formal request for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe.

“This is a white lie. We have sent the request duly signed by us to the Chief Minister’s Office by registered post,” a family member told IANS.

Arunachal, Kashmir are India’s, China told

India has clearly told China that Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir “are integral and inalienable parts of India”, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said Friday.

The minister told the Lok Sabha that China claims some 90,000 sq km of Indian territory in Arunachal Pradesh.

“Indian territory under the occupation of China in Jammu and Kashmir is approximately 38,000 sq km,” he added.

In addition, Pakistan had illegally ceded 5,180 sq km of Indian territory in its Kashmir to China, he added.

Odisha villagers meet Oram, seek tribal status

Cease ‘activities’ in Pakistani Kashmir, China told

China has been told to cease its “activities” in Pakistani Kashmir, Defence Minister Arun Jaitley said Friday.

The minister told the Lok Sabha that the government paid close attention to “Chinese activities in Pakistan occupied Kashmir”.

“The government has conveyed its concerns to China and asked them to cease such activities,” he said, without elaborating.

Further, regular meetings were held between India and China, including at the highest level, to discuss bilateral, regional and global issues, the minister said.

Netherlands to receive 74 more MH17 bodies

Two more planes with a total of 74 bodies of the victims of the crashed Malaysia Airline flight MH17 will reach Eindhoven Airport late Friday.

The planes carrying the bodies are expected to land Friday evening followed by a sombre ceremony, a minute of silence and transportation of the coffins in a convoy from Eindhoven to Hilversum, Xinhua reported.

One of the planes will be accompanied by Dutch Foreign Minister Frans Timmermans and his Australian counterpart Julie Bishop.

Till Wednesday, 40 bodies were taken to Holland.
