Bangladeshi plane catches fire at Nepal airport, passengers safe

A Bangladeshi aircraft caught fire while landing at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Monday afternoon, officials said.

Airport police said the wheels of Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight BG702 caught fire when it touched down at the airport at around 2 p.m., Xinhua reported.

Fire fighters at TIA soon brought the minor fire under control and the passengers were evacuated.

“The aircraft has now been parked at the airport’s hangar and its scheduled return to Dhaka at 3.10 p.m. has been cancelled,” a high level source at the TIA told Xinhua.

Emraan waiting for right script to work with Salman

Actor Emraan Hashmi would love to team up with Bollywood superstar Salman Khan, but says that the script has to be really good.

“If got the opportunity I would love to do. But so far I have not any such script where I can work with him,” Emraan said here.

“But would definitely do it, if I will get,” he added.

Emraan is currently busy promoting his forthcoming film “Raja Natwarlal”, in which he will be seen as a conman. At the weekend, he was spotted selling “fake” tickets for Salman starrer “Kick”.

UP government in denial mode over riots: BJP

The BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit Monday lashed out at the SP government for alleging the former had a role in the communal clashes in the state.

Attacking the Samajwadi Party (SP) government for billing the communal clashes in Saharanpur as a “caste conflict”, state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesman Vijay Bahadur Pathak told reporters the Akhilesh Yadav government had gone in a denial mode.

He said the state government is shirking away from its responsibility and blaming other parties without any proof or evidence.

Israel embarks on ‘unlimited ceasefire’ policy in Gaza

Israel embarked on an “unlimited ceasefire” policy in Gaza Monday morning after 21 days of conflict claimed over 1,030 Palestinian lives.

The new policy, adopted amid mounting international pressure to halt hostilities, means the Israeli military will halt the deliberate attacks in Gaza and will open fire only in retaliation to Gaza militant fire, an Israeli official told Xinhua.

“We are now on ‘unlimited ceasefire’, as decided by the political echelon,” the source said. The Prime Minister’s Office was not immediately available for comment.

Three killed as groups clash in another UP town

Three people were killed and over a dozen injured Monday when a minor brawl turned ugly in Rampur town of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The incident took place in Mehndipur village when a motorbike hit some people. A verbal spat soon turned into a violent clash and shots were fired at the scene.

Three people – Danish, Jalish and Munna – were killed on the spot while over a dozen sustained injuries.

Rampur is state minister Azam Khan’s home town. He is also the legislator from there.

Palestinian,Israeli envoys disappointed at UN’s Gaza statement

Representatives of Palestine and Israel to the UN Monday voiced disappointment at a Security Council statement endorsing a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.

The presidential statement, which was adopted at an emergency council meeting in the early hours of the day, expressed “strong support for the call by international partners and the secretary-general of the UN for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire”, Xinhua reported.

Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian permanent observer to the UN, was the first to speak of disappointment.

Court orders CID probe in Tapas Paul’s rape remarks

The Calcutta High Court Monday ordered the West Bengal CID to probe and submit a report regarding the rape-and-violence remarks made by Trinamool Congress parliamentarian Tapas Paul, a counsel said.

The order by the court of Justice Dipankar Dutta came in a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking criminal proceedings against the Lok Sabha member from Krishnanagar who was caught on successive tapes exhorting people in his constituency in Nadia district to kill activists of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and rape their women.

Security upped in Kashmir village after clashes

Heavy police force was deployed in a Kashmir village Monday after clashes broke out between two communities.

A senior police officer told IANS in Jammu that heavy police force was deployed in Poond village of Kathua district after clashes erupted following alleged animal slaughter by members of one community.

Five shops were torched after the clashes.

Senior police and civil administration officials have rushed to the village, 130 km from Jammu, to restore calm.

Nigerian airline suspends flights to Liberia over Ebola virus

Arik Air, Nigeria’s largest commercial airline, is set to suspend operations to Monrovia in Liberia and Freetown in Sierra-Leone following the first Ebola virus death officially confirmed here.

The suspension was a precautionary measure and would be in force until further notice, Xinhua reported citing an airline statement.

The Nigerian government confirmed Friday a Liberian national, who had arrived in the country last week, died of Ebola virus in Lagos, the first case in Nigeria.

Toll in Philippines militant attack rises to 19

At least 19 people were killed and 13 others injured Monday in an ambush staged by members of the militant group Abu Sayyaf in the southern Philippines province of Sulu, the military said.

The Abu Sayyaf gunmen, estimated at around 50, waylaid about 40 people, including children, who were on board two vehicles at around 8.30 a.m. in Lumapid village in Talipao town of Sulu, said Martin Pinto, commander of the Sulu-based 2nd Marine Brigade of the government troops.

1,129 killed in eastern Ukraine crisis: UN report

At least 1,129 people have been killed and 3,442 others wounded in the violent conflicts in eastern Ukraine since mid-April, the UN said Monday.

According to a report released by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, the conflicts have also displaced over 100,000 people.

It also voices concern over escalating violence in eastern Ukraine, saying that armed groups continue to abduct, detain, torture and execute people in the restive Lugansk and Donetsk regions, Xinhua reported.

Narayana fails to qualify for women’s 100m semis

Indian sprinter Narayana Sharadha failed to qualify for the women’s 100 metre semi-final after finishing fifth out of eight competitors in the heat at the Commonwealth Games here Sunday.

Jamaica’s Schillonie Calvert, Sheniqua Ferguson of Bahamas and Canadian Crystal Carly-Kristen Emmanuel qualified for the semis to be run at the Hampden Park Stadium Monday.

While Schillonie topped the heat clocking 11.29 seconds, the 27-year-old Chennai woman finished the race in 11.81 seconds.

Man jumps onto Delhi Metro track, injured

A 35-year-old man was injured Sunday evening when he jumped onto a Delhi Metro rail track here in an attempt to commit suicide, police said.

Kapil Grover, a resident of Hapur in Uttar Pradesh, jumped from platform No.2 at the Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar Metro station in north Delhi around 6.30 p.m.

He received injuries to his head and elbow on being slightly hit by the Metro train running between Jahangirpuri and Huda City Centre on the Yellow Line.

An unbeaten 131-run stand between captain Alastair Cook and Gary Ballance gave England the initiative and took them to 186 for one at tea on day one of the third Test against India at The Rose Bowl here Sunday.

Shot putter Karhana fails to qualify for finals

Indian shot putter Om Parkash Singh Karhana failed to reach the men’s finals after he finished fifth in his Group B qualification at the Commonwealth Games here Sunday.

Jamaica’s O’Dayne Richards and South Africa’s Orazio Cremona qualified from the group for the finals, to be played Monday, with throws of 20.24m and 20.03m at the Hampden Park Stadium.

Karhana, who hails from Gurgaon, threw a best of 18.98m on his third and final attempt. His first two throws went for 17.67m and 18.54m, respectively.

ICC urges Dhoni, Cook to show respect to its judicial process

Stung by criticisms from Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Alastair Cook on the Ravindra Jadeja-James Anderson row, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has requested both the Indian and England skippers to show restraint and have respect in the judicial process that went into the alleged altercation during the first Test in Nottingham.

Dhoni has slammed ICC’s decision to fine Jadeja 50 percent of his match fee for the all-rounder’s getting into an altercation with Anderson. Dhoni slammed the ICC saying “a lot of things were neglected in judging the case”.

Boxer Manoj enters 64 kg quarters

Indian boxer Manoj Kumar entered the quarterfinals of the men’s 64 kg event at the Commonwealth Games here Sunday.

The 27-year-old defeated Canadian Arthur Biyarslanov 2:1 in the Round of 16 at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre.

Manoj won the first two rounds with the exact score line of 29 points to Biyarslanov’s 28. Though the Canadian came back to win the third and final round with reversed scores, it was too late for him as the judges ruled in favour of the Indian.

In the last eight, Manoj will take on England’s Samuel Maxwell Tuesday.

The Arab Parliament (AP) Sunday condemned the escalation of violence in Libya, warning that the situation threatens Arab national security.

AP President Ahmed Mohammed Al Jarwan demanded that all the involved parties exert joint efforts to preserve territorial integrity and unity of Libya and realise political and security stability.

Al Jarwan affirmed AP’s support for Arab diplomatic efforts aimed at preserving unity of Libya and reconcile warring factions.

He called for immediate halt to fighting between armed groups that shed Arab blood.

Man dies in scuffle over parking

A 57-year-old man man died Sunday morning in a clash with four neighbours over a parking issue, police here said.

Rajender Bhatia got into a fight with his neighbours – Dharmender, 50, Kartik, 28, Ashok, 57, and his son Mohit, 28 – around 11.30 a.m. near his house in Patel Nagar area in central Delhi.

Police said that Bhatia suddenly fell on the ground during the scuffle.

“Bhatia was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar told IANS.

The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Sunday urged all the members of WTO to find a solution to the impasse following India’s call Friday for postponing adoption of the TF (trade facilitation) Protocol.

Bhuvnesh Kumar, Secretary of the Uttar Pradesh government, today claimed that no untoward incidents have occurred over the past 18 hours since violent clashes erupted between two communities here yesterday. “There is total control over the situation. No untoward incidents have occurred over the last 18 hours,” Kumar told ANI. “The way the situation yesterday unfolded suddenly, it took a lot of effort by the local administration to take control of the situation soon after. Government gave sufficient security, and the security personnel have been deployed appropriately,” he said.
