Jadeja appeals against fine

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja Wednesday appealed to the International Cricket Council (ICC) against the 50 percent fine slapped on him by Match Referee David Boon for his altercation with England fast bowler James Anderson during the first drawn Test in Trent Bridge.

The ICC in a statement said that after receiving legal submissions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) it has accepted Jadeja’s request for an appeal against the recent decision by Boon.

Paddy Doyle, endurance athlete, has managed to earn 212 world records, mostly for running cross-country with weights on his back. The 49-year-old ex-paratrooper has bagged over 31 world records this year, and from the total 212 records, many of them were recognized by half a dozen global bodies, including 63 Guinness World Records, the Daily Star reported. Doyle said that he can’t be built like a fridge and so he has to keep his weight down because he competes in endurance challenges, where one has to have discipline.

Canada spy agency says China hacked into NRC computers

Canadian Treasury Board says Chinese spies hacked into the systems of a top Canadian government research organization.

According to the BBC, the government said that the computer infrastructure of the National Research Council was breached by a “Chinese state-sponsored actor”.

The breach was confirmed by one of Canada”s spy agencies.

However, the report was dismissed by the Chinese embassy in Ottawa, who deemed the allegation as “groundless”.

Former soccer star David Beckham has been voted the best male celebrity ‘suit wearer’ in a new poll.

The 39-year-old managed to grab the top position, beating off competition from American singer-songwriter Justin Timberlake and actor George Clooney to top the poll by Institchu.co.uk, a way of ordering a custom-tailored suit online.

The online suit tailor asked 520 women to choose the male celebrity they thought looked best in a suit, with Beckham topping the poll as over a fifth of respondents voted for him, reports contactmusic.com.

Lok Sabha passes Delhi budget

The Lok Sabha Wednesday passed the budget for the national capital by a voice vote.

The task, normally carried out in the Delhi assembly, had to be taken up by the parliament as the state is under president’s rule.

“The Lok Sabha is taking up the budget as it is a constitutional necessity,” Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said in the Lok Sabha.

On July 18, Jaitley had presented Delhi’s Rs.36,776 crore budget for fiscal 2014-15 in parliament, proposing a new specialty hospital and 100 ambulances for accident victims, while keeping tax rates unchanged.

Gokul Pati is Odisha’s new chief secretary

Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Gokul Chandra Pati was Wednesday appointed Odisha’s new chief secretary, an official said.

Pati, a 1978 batch IAS officer, who was on central deputation and serving as the union secretary for defence production in the defence ministry, succeeds Jugal Kishore Mohapatra who went on central deputation.

Pati, 58, is scheduled to take charge Aug 1.

The government has also effected a reshuffle at the senior level of the state bureaucracy, the official of the general administration department told IANS.

MPs complain about ‘stale food’ in parliament

Members of the Rajya Sabha Wednesday complained that “stale food” was being served to them in the parliament canteen, and said a few members fell ill because of it.

Raising the issue in the house, Janata Dal-United leader K.C. Tyagi said two members – Samajwadi Party’s Ramgopal Yadav and Jaya Bachchan – fell ill after consuming food in the parliament canteen, and asked the government to look into it.

“Members are falling ill after eating in the parliament canteen… Ramgopal Yadav and Jaya Bachchan both fell ill after eating there,” Tyagi said.

Ukraine denies firing ballistic missiles against insurgents

Ukraine Wednesday dismissed Western media reports that Kiev used short-range ballistic missiles against insurgents in the east of the country.

“The Ukrainian Armed Forces do not use ballistic missiles,” National Security and Defence Council (NSDC) spokesman Andriy Lysenko told reporters during a briefing in Kiev.

Lysenko said government forces “have enough weapons with less power” to use during the military operation to retake cities and towns seized by rebels, Xinhua reported.

Child falls into pot of boiling syrup, dies

A three-year-old boy died after he fell into a pot of boiling sugar syrup, police said here Wednesday.

The child, Dev, was in his mother’s arms when she was hit by an e-rickshaw outside a sweet shop in east Delhi’s Trilokpuri area Tuesday evening, knocking the child off into the pot of boiling sugar syrup.

His mother, Pinky, tried to pull the child out of the pot, and also suffered burns on her hands.

Both were rushed to a hospital, where Dev died of his injuries.

Police said Dev and his mother were on their way to buy milk from the market when the e-rickshaw hit her.

Britain prepares to meet Ebola threat

Authorities in Britain will soon hold an emergency meeting to discuss the “threat” posed by the Ebola virus that has killed more than 670 people in West Africa, a government official said Wednesday.

“At the moment we don’t think any British nationals (abroad) are affected and we are fairly confident there are no cases in the UK… But it is a threat, it is something we need to respond to and we will be doing so through the Cobra mechanism,” BBC quoted Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond as saying.

10 dead in Pune landslide, 150 feared trapped: NDRF

At least 10 people were killed in the landslide near Pune in Maharashtra Wednesday morning while over 150 people are feared trapped under the debris, the NDRF said.

The accident happened in a village in Pune district of the state around 6 a.m. National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) spokesperson Anil Sharma, citing initial reports, said the landslide was triggered by heavy rain.

“Ten bodies have been pulled out from the debris while over 150 people are feared trapped under the rubble,” he told IANS.

Infosys investors give nod to Sikka as new CEO

Investors of Infosys Ltd. Wednesday approved a special resolution appointing Vishal Sikka as new chief executive and managing director from Aug 1 at the company’s extraordinary general meeting here.

Infosys’ outgoing vice chairman and co-founder S. Gopalakrishnan presided over the meeting.

The shareholders also approved Sikka’s appointment as a whole-time director on the company’s board from June 14, 2014, to June 13, 2019, and its decision to pay him a salary of $5.08 million (Rs.30.5 crore) with stock options (equity shares) valued at $2 million (Rs.12 crore) per annum.

Kerry to arrive in Delhi Wednesday evening

John Kerry, US Secretary of State, will arrive here Wednesday evening. The visit is expected to lay the groundwork for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s much-awaited September visit to the US.

During his visit, Kerry and Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj will jointly chair the fifth annual India-US Strategic Dialogue at 3 pm on Thursday. This will be followed by delegation-level talks.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin told reporters here that both Kerry and Sushma Swaraj will interact with the media after the talks.

England were in firm control at lunch on day four of the third cricket Test after bowling out India for 330 runs and choosing not to apply the follow-on. The hosts then sped to 80 for two in their second outing to extend their lead over the visitors to 319 runs at The Rose Bowl here Wednesday.

James Anderson recorded his 16th five-wicket haul after taking India’s final two wickets in the morning session.

Pakistan summons Afghan envoy over cross-border attack

Pakistan Wednesday summoned Afghan envoy and lodged a strong protest over an attack launched by terrorists from across the border.

Pakistan’s foreign ministry said in a statement that between 70 and 80 terrorists were involved in the cross-border attack on Pakistan military posts in Upper Dir of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, bordering Afghanistan, late Tuesday, Xinhua reported.

At least seven terrorists were killed and nine injured as the attack was successfully repulsed by the Pakistan military, the statement said.

Indian in Dubai jailed for groping woman

An Indian expatriate has been jailed for groping a woman at a metro station here, a media report said Wednesday.

The Indian, identified only as J.K., 26, was found guilty of molesting a 40-year-old Indian woman when he drew his body close to her on an escalator in a Dubai Metro station in March this year, Gulf News reported.

The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the man to a three-month jail term followed by deportation on completion of his imprisonment.

The Indian worker had entered a not guilty plea before the court in June.

Actress Sally Farmiloe dead

British actress Sally Farmiloe is dead following a battle with bone and liver cancer. She was 60.

The “Howard’s Way” actress passed away peacefully in her sleep Monday (July 28) afternoon surrounded by her family members, reports contactmusic.com.

Her agent said that Farmiloe took “a turn for the worse” about a month ago. “She just faded away. She was very weak and she just went to sleep. She was not in pain and she just slipped away.”

She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, and appeared to have won the battle after undergoing successful chemotherapy.

North Korea fires four short-range projectiles

North Korea fired four short-range projectiles Wednesday, media reported.

Two short-range projectiles were fired around 7.30 a.m. and 7.40 a.m. from Mount Myohyang of Pyongyang province in the easterly direction, Xinhua reported citing Yonhap news agency.

The officials said the launches seemed to fail as the projectiles flew for barely several seconds, the report said.

Pyongyang launched two more short-range projectiles, which flew around 210 km and 130 km each, at 5.50 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively, from the same region in the easterly direction.
