The Election Commission Wednesday sought a report along with video footage from a Bengal district magistrate after Trinamool MP Sougata Roy allegedly urged party workers to capture polling booths.

Roy, the Trinamool Congress candidate for Dum Dum Lok Sabha constituency in North 24-Parganas, allegedly exhorted party workers to “pay back the CPI-M in the same vein” while reminding them of the Marxist party’s violent activities and booth capturing during previous polls.

269 people to fight 20 LS seats in Kerala

A total of 269 aspirants will fight it out for the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in Kerala on voting day April 10, officials said.

Wednesday was the last day for withdrawal of nominations here. In all, 56 candidates withdrew their nominations.

In Kerala, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) and the CPI-M led Left Democratic Front (LDF) are the two major political combinations.

While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has recently begun contesting all 20 seats, it is yet to open its account even in the 140-member state assembly.

Quit before you take India cricket to gutters, says Bindra

Former Indian cricket board president Inderjit Singh Bindra Wednesday launched a scathing attack on board chief Narayanaswami Srinivasan, saying he should resign immediately before he takes Indian cricket to the gutter along with himself.

“Quit before you (Srinivasan) drag Indian cricket down the gutter along with yourself,” said Bindra.

Bindra’s comments came a day after the Supreme Court said that a fair investigation in the Indian Premier League (IPL) betting scandal would not be possible if Srinivasan continues as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Italy rejects marines’ trial in India: envoy

Italy will not participate in the trial of two Italian marines held in India for over two years for allegedly killing two Indian fishermen, Italy’s special envoy in the case Staffan de Mistura said Wednesday.

“Whatever happens at the March 28 hearing in New Delhi, we will not be present,” De Mistura told an Italian house committee.

De Mistura said that “the Italian position is very firm” and that is “no trial”, ANSA news agency reported.

De Mistura also reiterated that Italy’s goal was to rally international support for the case.

Field Uma Bharti against Sonia, Ramdev to BJP

Days after sharing stage with BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, yoga guru Baba Ramdev Wednesday urged the party to field Uma Bharti from the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency against Congress president Sonia Gandhi.

“Though the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has fielded candidates in all constituencies, why has it not fielded a strong candidate from Rae Bareli,” Ramdev asked at a press conference here.

He said if the BJP agreed to field Bharti from Rae Bareli, he and his followers would campaign for her.

Rare art objects displayed at National Museum

A boar-headed copper anthropomorph, a terracotta female figurine with animal horns and a monumental Naga Deva stone sculpture are amongst a few rare art objects displayed in the capital for the first time in an exhibition at the National Museum.

“The Body in Indian Art” brings together 300 artworks sourced from 44 institutions across India.

Spread over 18,000 square feet, the two-month long exhibition attempts to find answers to the universal question on death, birth and rebirth by tracing the body in several civilizations.

First round of Pakistan-Taliban talks concludes

The first round of direct peace talks between the Pakistan government and the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leadership concluded Wednesday on a satisfactory note.

Both sides, during the talks which were held at an undisclosed location in the North Waziristan tribal region Wednesday, reportedly agreed on several issues, Dawn online reported.

The TTP has also responded positively to the government’s demand of indefinite ceasefire and offer of releasing non-combatant prisoners.

The government’s mediators are expected to return from the venue of the talks Wednesday night.

15 candidates to fight in out in Ghaziabad

A total of 15 candidates will contest the Lok Sabha polls from Ghaziabad constituency in Uttar Pradesh, officials said Wednesday on the last date of withdrawal of nominations.

Giving details of the election arrangements, District Magistrate S.V.S. Ranga Rao said names of candidates on the electronic voting machines (EVMs) have been put in alphabetical order in Hindi.

Candidates from national and state political parties will be named first, followed by candidates from registered political parties and finally candidates contesting as Independents, he said.

HC sore about inadequate publicity of northeast helpline

Expressing displeasure over adequate publicity not being given to the helpline set up for northeast people to prevent offences against them, the Delhi High Court Wednesday directed police to widely publicise the number.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul asked Delhi Police why they have not publicised the helpline number 1093 on TV, radio and in print media for wider reach.

Sridhar named Kings XI fielding coach

Kings XI Punjab Wednesday announced that former left-arm spinner R. Sridhar will be their fielding coach.

Sridhar is a former Hyderabad spinner who played for 22 years. He started his coaching career in 2001 and has also led the India under-19 in 2014 World Cup as assistant coach.

On his appointment, Kings XI coach Sanjay Bangar said: “On behalf of the team, I would like to welcome R. Sridhar to KXIP. Sridhar has been a tremendous player and I am certain that together by setting in the right techniques, we will be able to coach the team to play some great cricket this season.”

Scottish independence not good for economy: Industry body

The Scottish government’s plan for independence does not add up to much economically, even taking into account oil and gas revenues, the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) warned Wednesday.

In an analysis, the industry lobby said there was “no credible plan for deficit reduction, no clarity over what currency it will use or its future relationship with the European Union”, Xinhua reported.

Scotland’s net deficit is larger than the rest of Britain, with 8.3 percent accounted for its GDP or 2,303 pounds ($3,807) per person, according to data compiled by the CBI.

Delhi HC orders vehicle checks for pollution

The Delhi High Court Wednesday directed the city government and traffic police to come up with a “special checking drive” in the capital to ensure that all vehicles carry a valid pollution under control certificate.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by an RTI activist raising concern over air pollution in the capital.

RTI activist Mahesh K. Gupta sought direction for stricter implementation of pollution check norms.

EC’s single window system for party campaigns, contestants

The Election Commission (EC) Wednesday instructed officials to ensure a single window system for granting permission for campaigns, processions, public rallies and other election-related issues.

The new system will come into force in all districts and will also be used by candidates for taking permission for use of vehicles, loud-speakers and far-off air strips during campaigning of the 16th Lok Sabha polls.

The single window cell will be opened in the offices of the returning official.

Kejriwal to refocus on Delhi from April

AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal will refocus on Delhi from April after campaigning in Varanasi for the general elections, a party leader said Wednesday.

Kejriwal will visit all seven constituencies and hold road shows in Delhi from April 1. The campaining will be comnducted for a week, the party leader told IANS.

The former Delhi chief minister’s two-day visit to Varanasi, where he announced he will contest against Bharatiya Janata Party’s Narendra Modi, held six road shows in one of the oldest cities in India.

Delhi will go to polls April 10.

South Africa’s Parnell to appear in Mumbai court

South African pacer Wayne Parnell will be missing his team’s ICC World Twenty20 match against the Netherlands slated for Thursday since he has to appear in a Mumbai court in a drug related case.

Parnell allegedly tested positive for recreational drugs after a police raid on a rave party in Mumbai in 2012 when he was playing for Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Pune Warriors. He is among the 35 wanted foreign nationals.

Parnell is being accompanied by his manager Donne Commins and Mumbai-based lawyer Makrand Narwekar, reports Independent Online (IOL).

Russian mathematician named for 2014 Abel Prize

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters Wednesday named Russian mathematician Yakov G. Sinai for the 2014 Abel Prize for his contributions to dynamical systems, ergodic theory, and mathematical physics.

Nils Stenseth, the president of the academy, in a statement Wednesday named the winner of the prestigious prize, also called “the mathematics Nobel”, in Oslo.

Sinai, a senior researcher with the Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics, Russian Academy of Sciences, and a professor at Princeton University in the US, will receive the prize at a ceremony in Oslo May 20.

Pleasant Wednesday in Delhi, cloudy Thursday expected

The national capital experienced a pleasant Wednesday with maximum temperature recorded at 32.2 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season’s average. Met has forecast a cloudy Thursday.

The minimum and the maximum temperatures would hover around 33 degree Celsius and 18 degree Celsius respectively.

“Thursday morning will start with mist, while the skies will remain cloudy throughout the day”, said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

The day’s minimum temperature was recorded at 19.1 degrees Celsius, two notches above the season’s average.

Felix appointed coach of national hockey team

Former India hockey captain Jude Felix was Wednesday appointed the coach of the senior men’s national team and will work under chief coach Terry Walsh.

Felix will join the training camp here at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium Thursday. The team is preparing for the World Cup that will be held at The Hague, Netherlands from May 31 – June 15.

Hockey India (HI) said that Felix has been appointed on a probationary period of three months with the senior men hockey team.

Government notifies more sections of new company law

The government Wednesday notified 183 new sections of the new Companies Act, in addition to 100 sections notified earlier, making most part of the new legislation operational.

With this notification, the key requirements of the new legislation relating to incorporation, management, board functioning, accounts and audit will now be operational with effect from April 1, 2014.

India outpace Pakistan to emerge South Asian Handball champions

India outsmarted Pakistan 36-31 to win the third South Asian Handball Championship at an outdoor court at the Genesis Global School here Wednesday.

India, who beat Pakistan also in the league stage, shrugged off a shaky start to get the better of the reigning South Asian Games champions. Bangladesh beat Afghanistan to finish third in the five-nation competition.

47 file nominations for phase 1 of Bengal LS poll

As many as 47 candidates filed their nominations for the first phase of the Lok Sabha election in West Bengal on four seats, an Election Commission official said Wednesday.

The deadline for filing papers for the April 17 polls to Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar in the northern part of the state expired during the day.

The scrutiny of nominations would be done March 27, while March 29 is the last day for withdrawal of candidature.

Delhi HC summons official over state of night shelters

The Delhi High Court Wednesday observed that the provision of night shelters in the capital was “thoroughly unsatisfactory” and summoned the CEO of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to assist the court in coming out with “better and humane” shelters.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul took the decision to call the DUSIB chief after it was informed by counsel Jayant Bhushan that most of the night shelters were operating in inhuman conditions.

Criminalisation of politics is the biggest challenge facing the country today, Election Commissioner H.S. Brahma said here Wednesday.

He said India’s electorate is larger than the population of all of Europe. The country is one of the world’s most stable democracies, giving it a unique position in the world.
