IBM again tops lists of US patent recipients

IBM has received a record 7,534 patents in 2014 — marking the 22nd consecutive year that the company topped the annual list of US patent recipients, a company statement said here Monday.

IBM inventors earned an average of more than 20 patents per day in 2014, propelling the company to become the first to surpass more than 7,000 patents in a single year, it said.

November industrial output increases, December inflation up marginally

Government data Monday brought news of some economic revival with industrial activity registering a healthy growth of 3.8 percent during November last year, with only a marginal rise in December’s retail inflation.

Industrial activity, measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), registered a growth of 3.8 percent during November 2014, from a deceleration of 1.3 percent during the corresponding month of 2013, on the back of a rebound in capital goods.

Woman robbed, murdered in Delhi

An elderly woman was robbed and murdered by unidentified assailants at her home here Monday, police said.

Sulochna Bansal, 65, was present along with her five-year-old grandson at her home in Punjabi Bagh locality in west Delhi around 11 a.m. Monday when a group of assailants barged into the house and held her hostage in a room.

When she resisted the intruders, they stabbed her many times and fled with valuables and cash, police said.

Dutch fashion designer Molenaar is dead

Acclaimed Dutch couturier Frans Molenaar passed away at the age of 74, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported Monday.

Molenaar broke a metatarsal and several ribs in a fall down the stairs last month. His condition had deteriorated since the accident and the injuries he sustained from the fall led to his death.

The couturier died Friday at the VU Medical Centre in Amsterdam, Xinhua news agency reported citing the newspaper. He will be buried Jan 15.

Coast Guard shot did not hit suspected terror boat: Parrikar

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar Monday ruled out that a shot from the Indian Coast Guard could have hit the suspected terror boat, resulting in the fire that led to an explosion and subsequent sinking of the vessel.

“We are absolutely sure we did not hit it,” Parrikar said when asked if the fire in the boat could have resulted due to one of the warning shots from the Coast Guard hitting the vessel which was tracked in Indian waters in the Arabian Sea.

The incident was recorded on camera and a part of it will be released soon, he told Headlines Today channel in an interview.

India looking forward to new Sri Lankan president’s visit

India Monday said it was looking forward to the visit by new Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena and hoped that the new government will “take into account the views of all sections of the Sri Lankan population to live a life of dignity and peace”.

To a question on the Sri Lankan presidential elections that saw Mahinda Rajapaksa ousted, external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said Sri Lanka has a “very healthy tradition of democratic change at regular intervals”.

Man stabbed to death in Delhi

A 25-year-old shopkeeper was beaten and stabbed to death by four men for resisting a robbery bid here, police said Monday.

Rahil Usmani was returning home from his shop Sunday night near Kamla Market area in central Delhi when four men overpowered him and tried to snatch his mobile and wallet.

When Usmani resisted their robbery attempt, they attacked him with a sharp edged weapon and stabbed him several times.

Imran Khan doesn’t want JC: Pakistan minister

Pakistan Information Minister Pervez Rashid Monday asked Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan not to mislead people, saying the latter does not want a judicial commission (JC) to be formed.

During a press briefing here, Rashid said he would himself ask National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq to tender his resignation if the word bogus had been mentioned in a tribunal’s findings relating to the audit of National Assembly (NA)-122 constituency, The News International reported.

He was responding to Khan’s allegations that the 2013 general election was rigged.

India needs action, not hype: Congress

The Congress Monday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for running a government of “no action, melodrama only”, while demanding action oriented governance sans hype.

Accusing the seven-month-old government of “steadfastly” following a “Namo policy”, which stands for “no action, melodrama only”, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said: “In the last seven months, India has seen a lot of hype but no action. Prime Minister Modi and the BJP government have come to be known for couple mismatch between hype and action on the ground.”

Sierra Leone district remains Ebola-free for 44 days

Pujehun district in the southern region of Sierra Leone has gone without a single case of the Ebola virus disease for 44 days, the chairman of the district council said Monday.

Sadiq Siilah said this while addressing stakeholders from the district called to assess the situation since the last case of the disease was reported there, Xinhua news agency reported.

India, US keen to have ‘excellent outcomes’ from Obama visit

With a fortnight left for US President Barack Obama’s visit, India Monday said it was looking forward with great enthusiasm to the “landmark” visit and both sides were keen to have “excellent outcomes” from the talks.

Obama will be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade Jan 26, in what will be his second visit to India.

“I can confirm that the government of India is looking forward with great enthusiasm” to the visit, external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said at a briefing here.

Karnataka inks a dozen pacts at Vibrant Gujarat

Karnataka Monday signed agreements at the Vibrant Gujarat Summit here with dozen firms for a combined investment of Rs.50,100 crore in the state across sectors like IT, education, tourism infrastructure, solar energy and aerospace.

“A high-level delegation, led by Commerce and Industry Secretary K. Ratna Prabha, held meetings with potential investors and signed agreements with 12 firms for collectively investing Rs.50,100 crore across sectors in the state,” the state industry department said in a statement here.

Scientists warn of dangers of artificial intelligence

Hundreds of scientists and technologists, including Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk, have signed an open letter calling for studies into artificial intelligence (AI) to combat the dangers of the technology, a British daily reported Monday.

The letter created by the Future of Life Institute warns that “it is important to research how to reap its benefits while avoiding potential pitfalls”, The Independent reported.

It adds that “our AI systems must do what we want them to do” and lays out research objectives that will “help maximise the societal benefit of AI”.

Naxalite outfit chief killed in Jharkhand

The chief of Jharkhand Prastuti Committee, a left-wing extremist group, Guddu Ganjhu, 50, was shot dead at Birhu village under Simaria police station in Chatra district, 150km north from here, late on Saturday. Police suspect one of his aides killed him out of a power struggle within JPC to take over the extremist outfit.

Security forces recovered the bullet ridden body on Sunday morning after which Chatra SP SK Jha confirmed the identify of the dead. “He sustained bullet injuries in chest and in his leg. We have launched an investigation,” said Jha.

Three killed as boat capsizes in Turkey

At least three people were killed and four others missing after a boat overturned amid bad weather in a lake in northern Turkey Sunday, media reported.

Five fishermen and two children fell into the Gici Lake in the Samsun province of Turkey’s Black Sea Region amid inclement weather conditions, Xinhua reported, citing the Dogan News Agency.

“The boat with seven people overturned because of a storm,” Samsun Governor Ibrahim Sahin was quoted as saying, adding that the fishermen were warned about the bad weather, but they insisted on sailing.

Five killed in Nigeria market blasts

At least five people were killed and 21 others injured when two explosions ripped through a market in northeastern Nigeria Sunday, security officials said.

The blasts struck within minutes of each other at a crowded mobile phone market in the town of Potiskum in northeastern Nigeria’s Yobe state, according to a Voice of America report.

Socialite Paris Hilton, who owns eight dogs, may hire a full-time nanny for her new pet – a micro-mini teacup Pomeranian.

The 33-year-old bought the dog and another for her mother for $25,000 last week.

Casino busted in Gurgaon, 43 held

Gurgaon police Sunday busted a casino here and arrested 43 people, including five women.

The casino was being run in a house here in DLF Phase 2 area here.

Narendra Malhotra, the man running the gambling den, told police that he was involved in the illegal business for the past several months.

“Five women, experts at playing cards, were brought to India from Kathmandu in Nepal,” deputy commissioner of police (East) Deepak Saharan told media persons.

The officer said the raid was conducted early Sunday.

Bomb found in train in Madhya Pradesh

A bomb was found Sunday inside the Gondwana Express train that runs between Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh and Hazrat Nizamuddin station in Delhi, officials said.

After the train left Jabalpur around 3 p.m., a passenger noticed an unclaimed bag and informed the train ticket examiner.

The train was stopped at Sihora Road station, where the bag was examined, and a low intensity bomb was found, Jabalpur Superintendent of Police H.N.C. Mishra told IANS.

The bomb was defused and the train resumed its journey.

Marchers denounce terrorism at Paris rally

According to one of the organisers, about 1.5 million people participated in Sunday’s march in Paris.

Adanis, SunEdison to invest $4 bn in Gujarat solar park

Gautam Adani-led Adani Enterprises and US-based SunEdison will invest around Rs.25,000 crore ($4 billion) to set up a solar park in Gujarat that will create 20,000 new jobs.

The two companies will set up a joint venture for building the largest vertically integrated solar photovoltaic manufacturing facility in the country, said a statement Sunday by the Adani Group.
