India misses chance at 87th Academy Awards

India will have no show at the 87th Academy Awards as none of its probable contenders, including Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman, have made it to the final nomination list, which was announced here Friday.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences revealed the final nominations across all 24 categories at an event here.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor Thursday slammed a section of the media for “going beyond extremes” in generating sensational and voyeuristic reports and “defaming” him day after day.

Tharoor launched his latest book “India Shastra” in Kolkata which includes an essay on “Our Free and Irresponsible Media”.

Commenting on the evolution of India media from the “dull, unimaginative” days while he was growing up to the trend of breaking news on 24×7 news television channels, the Congress leader said the transformation has been for the worse.

Preeti eyes dance reality shows post ‘Ek Rishta..’

Actress Preeti Chaudhary, who is leaving the show “Ek Rishta Aisa Bhi”, says she would love to be part of a dance reality show if she gets an offer.

In the forthcoming episodes of “Ek Rishta Aisa Bhi”, Preeti’s character Sonia will die and her husband Raghav (played by Rahul Sharma) will marry one of her sisters.

“I was there for just a couple of months. As per the script requirement, my character will die and after that Raghav will marry one of my sisters,” Preeti told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

Two attempt suicide at Delhi Metro stations

Two people were critically injured when they tried to commit suicide at two Delhi Metro stations Thursday, police said.

The first incident was reported around 12.30 p.m. from west Delhi’s Jahangirpuri station from where 23-year-old Mohammed Ashif jumped on to the road from the elevated train track.

Ashif, a resident of west Delhi’s Narela, received head and leg injuries and was admitted to the Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital.

“The reason behind his extreme step is yet to be ascertained as no suicide note was recovered from his possession,” a police official said.

Uber cab rape: Victim identifies driver as rapist

The woman executive allegedly raped by Uber taxi driver Shiv Kumar Yadav identified him as the rapist during the recording of her statement in the trial which began Thursday, sources said.

Testifying as a prosecution witness in the case, the victim told Additional Sessions Judge Kaveri Baweja that she was raped by the cab driver Dec 5 last year. The victim’s statement was recorded in in-camera.

The German Thursday said that after the birth of his son in October, the World No.1 has played brilliant tennis owing to his happiness.

Army well prepared to tackle militants: Parrikar

The Indian Army was “well prepared” to tackle any situation, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said Thursday, in the wake of reports that militants may try to sneak into India and attack schools in Jammu and Kashmir on the eve of US President Barack Obama’s visit.

“We are well prepared,” Parrikar said in response to questions by reporters during the Army Day function here.

He said militants would try to create news by attacking schools in Kashmir.

Tannishtha, Nawazuddin, Deepti Naval in Hollywood film

“Jal” actress Tannishtha Chatterjee will soon start shooting for her next Hollywood project “Lion”, that will also feature other Indian actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Priyanka Bose and Deepti Naval. The shoot will start in Kolkata, Saturday.

The film is an adaptation of the book “A Long Way Home” written by Indian born Australian businessman Saroo Brierley. The book talks about his separation from his mother and how he was adopted by an Australian family.

Brahma to be new chief election commissioner

Harishankar Brahma would be the new chief election commissioner of India an official release said Thursday.

Brahma, the second from the northeast to hold the post after J.M.Lyngdoh (2001-04), will assume office Friday (Jan 16) as incumbent V.S Sampath retires Thursday.

The appointment of Brahma, the senior-most member of the Election Commission, was made by President Pranab Mukherjee, the release said. There is a convention of appointing the senior-most among the three commissioners as the chief election commissioner.

Delhi HC seeks government response on safeguarding Mahatma relics

The Delhi High Court has sought central government’s response on a plea seeking direction for government to take over the management of the National Gandhi Museum and other museums to safeguard the historic items related to Mahatma Gandhi.

A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw sought response from ministry of culture and Gandhi Smarak Sangrahalaya Samiti, which now manages the National Gandhi Museum in the capital, on the plea by April 8.

K-POP band N-Sonic set for multi-city tour in India

Popular South Korean all boys band N-Sonic are set to enthrall music lovers in Ahmedabad, Chennai and Guwahati starting Jan 26.

The Korean Cultural Center Thursday announced the globally popular music phenomenon, K-POP 2015 concert tour in India.

The K-POP concert tour is the first of its kind in the country with the band performing at IIM Ahmedabad, Jan 26; SRM University Chennai, Jan 28; and IIT Guwahati, Jan 30. The performances will be followed by a fan signing meet here, Jan 31.

India-Bhutan ties unique: Pranab

Noting that Indo-Bhutan relations are “unique”, President Pranab Mukherjee has said India’s commitment to that country would continue undiluted.

At a meeting with Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay here Wednesday, Mukherjee said 2014 has been a year of consolidation and intensification of relations between India and Bhutan, an official release said here Thursday.

The prime ministers of both countries visited each other’s countries on their first visits abroad. This reflects the highest importance that India accords to Bhutan, which is a neighbour and steadfast partner, he said.

Pakistan court declares TTP chief proclaimed offender

A Pakistani Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Karachi Thursday declared Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) chief Mullah Fazlullah as a proclaimed offender in the Karachi airport attack case.

ATC declared Fazlullah and TTP spokesperson Shahidullah Shahid as proclaimed offenders in last year’s attack, The News International reported

Three detainees — Sarmad Siddiqui, Nadeem alias Burger and Asif Zaheer — who are being tried in this case, were presented in court during the resumption of hearing.

Delhi Metro unveils art display panels at two stations

In its bid to promote art among commuters, Delhi Metro in association with the India Habitat Centre Thursday unveiled specially-designed display panels at two Metro stations.

The seven display panels on art and culture and 20 photographs displaying information about the history of photography in India and other art-related topics of historical importance were unveiled at the Jorbagh and Mandi House stations.

The initiative was part of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) inked between the two organisations last year.

No fund diversion: SpiceJet

Budget carrier SpiceJet Wednesday refuted a report that it had diverted funds to other group companies of parent firm Sun Group.

The company’s denial came after a media report claimed that SpiceJet had diverted Rs.875 crore to sister companies for SpiceJet’s advertisements.

“The company has entered into agreements with group-company only to the extent
required for its joint marketing and media purchasing activities,” SpiceJet said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

Pakistani batsman Umar Akmal Wednesday said all the players have high hopes about the performance in their World Cup opener against India Feb 15 in Adelaide.

Main part of AirAsia plane’s fuselage found

Indonesian search teams Wednesday located the main section of the fuselage of the AirAsia plane that crashed in the Java Sea Dec 28 with 162 people aboard, authorities said.

An unmanned submarine operated from Singaporean frigate MV Swift took photographs of the main part of the aircraft’s body and one of its wings, Singapore’s Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen wrote on his Facebook page.

“We have informed BASARNAS, the Indonesian search authority who can now begin recovery operations,” he wrote.

Haryana to consult Ramdev to promote yoga

The Haryana government has decided to hold consultation with yoga guru Ramdev to promote yoga and Ayurveda in the state, a minister said Wednesday.

Health Minister Anil Vij said he will meet Ramdev in Haridwar Thursday to hold discussions on promoting yoga and Ayurveda.

“Today yoga is recognized all over the world and Baba Ramdev has made invaluable contribution to it. Ayurveda is our traditional medical science which can cure many diseases,” Vij said.

Delhi HC to hear plea on AAP foreign funding after polls

Saying there was “no urgency”, the Delhi High Court Wednesday posted for Feb 18 a plea seeking registration of a criminal case against AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal and others for allegedly receiving foreign funds in violation of law.

A division bench of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw said that as election in Delhi was around the corner, the case would be heard later.

“We will consider the issue some other time. There is no such urgency in the issue. We will hear it after the election,” the bench said, and posted the case for Feb 18.

Voting in Delhi will be held Feb 7.

Special programme to boost vaccinations: Nadda

The government will launch a special programme to boost vaccinations in the country, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda said Wednesday.

“In our country, nearly 70 lakh children are only partially covered and 20 lakh are just not covered under the immunisation programme,” Nadda told reporters here.

In view of this, the health ministry is launching a special project called ‘Indradhanush’ apart from the regular vaccination programme to take care of the left-out children, he said.
