Set up forensic labs immediately: Delhi HC to government

The Delhi High Court Wednesday observed that impediments in setting up forensic laboratories “cannot come in the way of criminal investigation”, and directed the city government to search for buildings where such labs can be established immediately.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul said each zone in the capital should have a forensic lab.

The court sought a status report within three weeks from the Delhi government on availability of buildings to set up temporary forensic labs till the time it comes up with permanent labs.

Jharkhand records lowest infant mortality rate

Jharkhand has recorded the lowest infant mortality rate in 2012-13, the Unicef said in a statement here Wednesday.

“Jharkhand has the lowest infant mortality rate (IMR), as per the recently released Annual Health Survey 2012-13. The IMR (death rate of children below 1 year) declined from 41 per 1,000 live births in 2010-11 to 38 in 2011-12 and now to 36 in 2012-13,” the statement said.

The survey was conducted in 304 districts in 9 states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Odisha and Assam by the Registrar General of India.

Tool to estimate rooftop solar power launched

The Energy and Resource Institute Wednesday launched the world’s first tool named “WEB-GIS” to estimate the rooftop solar power potential for Indian solar cities, said an institute official.

The main objective of the initiative is to develop a high performing and flexible WEB-GIS tool to estimate the rooftop solar power potential in cities.

Chandigarh will be the first city where the tool will be launched followed by others.

Israeli parliament passes bill to draft ultra-orthodox Jews

A controversial law seeking criminal penalties for ultra-orthodox Jew military draft dodgers was approved Wednesday by Israel’s parliament, the Knesset.

The bill received 65 votes in favour and one vote against it, Xinhua reported.

Members of the opposition did not attend the vote since they are boycotting the discussions and votes on three controversial bills this week over what they dubbed the coalition’s “political brutality.”

Indian expats in Saudi Arabia demand online voting rights

Expatriate Indians in Saudi Arabia have demanded that the Indian authorities facilitate online voting for them through biometric system in the general elections due next month.

Although non-resident Indians (NRIs) have been permitted to register online and granted the right to vote in the elections, the registered voters can only exercise their franchise by being present in their respective constituencies in India.

However, millions of NRIs continue to demand online voting rights as most consider it impractical to travel and spend money just for voting.

Chhattisgarh face Kerala national girls hockey final

Chhattisgarh and Kerala stormed into the final of the fourth Hockey India (HI) Junior Women’s National Championship (Division B) at the Chamundi Vihar Hockey Ground here Wednesday.

In the first semi-final, Chhattisgarh defeated Manipur 4-0. Chhattisgarh’s Ishika Chaudhary was responsible for scoring the first goal (8th minute) followed by Priyanka Parihar (34th). In the second half, Akanksha Parmar and Sadhna Sengar banked a field goal each in the 38th and 65th minutes, respectively.

Compensate ‘shooting incident’ victims, NHRC tells Assam

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Wednesday asked the Assam government to pay Rs.5 lakh each to the next of kin of two youth killed by a joint team of the army and the Assam Police in 2009.

A division bench of the NHRC, comprising members Justice D. Murugesan and Satyabrata Pal, passed the orders Wednesday. It asked the Assam government to submit proof of payment to the commission by April 17 this year.

The two youth — Munindra Kalita (26) and Pingal Deka (27) — were killed by the joint team at Nasatra in Barpeta district of the state July 10, 2009.

HC seeks status report on ‘crime mapping’ of Delhi

The Delhi High Court Wednesday directed police to provide a status report on “crime mapping” of the capital, especially on crimes against women.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul directed Delhi Police to submit the report in a sealed cover.

“Delhi Police to file status report on crime mapping of the capital particularly of crimes against women,” said the bench, posting the matter for April 16.

Earlier, the bench directed police to do “crime mapping” in the capital to know the reasons behind incidents of harassment to women.

Thai PM’s lawyers seek more time to study documents

Lawyers for Thailand’s caretaker Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra Wednesday asked the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) for 45 more days to study rice-pledging graft charges against the premier.

Yingluck’s lawyer Norawit Lalaeng said the premier’s legal team had only managed to copy documents relating to the investigation Tuesday, leaving them with just two days’ time to prepare a defence, the Bangkok Post reported.

Yingluck is due to testify before the agency Friday.

AAP won’t accept donations from Goa mining firms

Donations and contributions from private mining companies are taboo for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Goa, a party leader said Wednesday.

The party, which will contest both Lok Sabha seats in Goa, unveiled its two candidates Wednesday.

Dattaram Desai will contest from the North Goa seat, while Swati Kerkar has been selected for the South Goa constituency.

The AAP said it was working towards replacing the private mining companies from Goa with a state-run corporation that will be the sole agency responsible for extracting ore.

Delhi’s poll officer gets notice over Bangladeshi voters

A court here Wednesday issued notice to Delhi’s chief electoral officer (CEO) on a plea that said Bangladeshi migrants and people from other states have enrolled in Delhi’s voters lists only to satisfy the vested interests of political parties.

The court was hearing a plea filed by Delhi resident Satyavir Singh, who has alleged that domestic migrants, who are registered as electors in other states, have also been issued voter identity cards.

February retail inflation slows to 8.10 percent

The consumer price index-based inflation or retail inflation for February slowed to 8.10 percent as compared to 8.79 percent in the previous month, government data showed Wednesday.

The corresponding provisional inflation rates for rural and urban areas for February 2014 are 8.51 percent and 7.55 percent respectively.

Inflation rates for rural and urban areas for January 2014 were 9.35 percent and 8.09 percent respectively, the data stated.

Food inflation for February 2014 stood at 8.57 percent compared to 9.9 percent in January 2014.

Former Bihar Congress chief joins LJP

In a jolt to the Congress in Bihar, former state president Chaudhary Mehboob Ali Kaisar Wednesday joined the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) of Ram Vilas Paswan.

Kaisar was reportedly unhappy with the Congress alliance with the Rashtriya Janata Dal of Lalu Prasad for the Lok Sabha polls and had showed his displeasure with his party’s decision to surrender the Khagaria seat to the RJD.

Soon after Kaisar joined the LJP, party chief Paswan announced he will be the LJP nominee from Khagaria.

EPL: West Brom captain Brunt ruled out for at least five weeks

English Premier League football club West Bromwich Albion confirmed Wednesday that team captain Chris Brunt will be out for five to six weeks owing to a ligament damage in his knee.

“Albion have been dealt a blow with Chris Brunt being ruled out for five to six weeks due to a knee injury,” said the club on its website.

The 29-year-old Brunt, a Northern Ireland midfielder, sustained the injury in his side’s 0-3 loss to Manchester United Saturday.

West Brom have grabbed 25 points after 28 matches and are currently in 17th place in the Premier League table.

Congress legislator A.P. Abdullakutty was Wednesday jostled by a crowd of activists of the youth wing of the CPI-M here in Kerala, police said.

Abdullakutty, who represents the Kannur assembly constituency, is currently in the eye of a storm following a police complaint against him by Saritha Nair, one of the main accused in the solar panel scam, who said he misbehaved with her.

Youth activists of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) surrounded the Congress legislator and shouted slogans demanding his resignation.

Ukraine seeks peaceful resolution to Crimean crisis

Ukraine would try to peacefully resolve the crisis in the autonomous republic of Crimea through political dialogue, the country’s acting Defence Minister Igor Tenyukh said here Wednesday.

“All issues must be resolved at the diplomatic level,” Xinhua quoted Tenyukh as telling a cabinet meeting.

At the same time, Tenyukh pointed out that the Ukrainian armed forces were ready to repel a possible external aggression against their country on the eastern and southern borders.

Media, entertainment industry to grow at 14.2 percent by 2018

India’s Media and Entertainment (M&E) industry is expected to log a 14.2 percent growth to more than Rs.1.78 lakh crore in the next four years, according to a FICCI-KPMG report released here Wednesday.

Driven largely by digitisation, the industry in 2013 grew at 11.8 percent over 2012 and touched Rs.91,800 crore.

“The media and entertainment industry is expected to register a CAGR of 14.2 percent to touch Rs.1,78,580 crore by 2018,” said the report titled “The Stage Is Set”.

Polls 2014: Video camera shortage hits Ghaziabad officials

The Ghaziabad district administration is facing a shortage of video cameras, said an officer Wednesday.

“To conduct peaceful elections we need about 200 video and still cameras but we possess only 80 cameras,” said Richhpal Singh, ADM City.

He added: “In the 2012 assembly elections, we hired cameras and paid at the rate of Rs.1,100 per camera per day. But this time, no one is ready to provide the cameras at this rate. So, we have written to the election officer to consider revising the rate at Rs.2,000 per camera per day for 12 hours of duty.”

Nepal to use private sector to market virgin mountains

In an effort to market Nepal’s virgin mountains in the international arena, the Nepal government said it will soon contract the private sector and investors in developing promotional packages, according to officials.

“We will ask the private sector and investors both from Nepal and abroad to develop a promotional scheme to market a number of unclimbed mountains in Nepal,” tourism ministry spokesperson Mohan Krishna Sapkota told Xinhua Wednesday.

In mid-January the ministry had announced that it would open 32 new mountains for expeditions from spring in the first phase.

Tejpal called woman associate regularly from prison

Former Tehelka editor-in-chief Tarun Tejpal, who is in judicial custody here, regularly telephoned from prison a Delhi-based woman business associate, an inquiry report said Wednesday.

The report filed before the Margao district and sessions court Wednesday by prison authorities also said a SIM card seized from Tejpal’s prison cell at the Sada sub-jail, 35 km from here, was registered in the name of a woman from a Panaji suburb.

It said Tejpal regularly called Sheela Lunkad, who is Tejpal’s partner in a hospitality venture.
