Delhi HC refuses to seize AAP accounts

The Delhi High Court Wednesday refused to seize the accounts of the AAP on a plea seeking registration of a criminal case against party chief Arvind Kejriwal and others for allegedly receiving foreign funds.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul said it “cannot seize the accounts of Aam Aadmi Party without deciding the case”.

The bench said it has not decided the case yet and “accounts cannot be seized like that”.

Bangladeshi influx into Assam to be poll issue: Venkaiah Naidu

The anti-Congress wave across India will also affect the Lok Sabha polls in the northeast, and influx from Bangladesh into Assam will be a major election issue for the BJP, party leader Venkaiah Naidu said here Wednesday.

The BJP leader targeted the Congress-led government and said the Aadhaar scheme was an attempt to make illegal migrants citizens of the country.

In the state to review the Bharatiya Janata Party’s poll preparations, Naidu said the Food Security Act was brought for “vote security” of the Congress.

Muslims disillusioned with Mamata: AIUDF

The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) Wednesday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of making hollow promises regarding the welfare of minorities.

“Mamata Banerjee makes tall claims about the development projects for minorities but nothing is reflected on the ground. Muslims have become disillusioned with her government,” AIUDF state president Siddiqullah Chowdhury said here.

Indo-Canadian gangster gunned down

A notorious Indo-Canadian gangster was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Vancouver in the Canadian province of British Columbia.

Tejinder Singh Malli, 29, and another man were shot when they were sitting in a car parked on Cordova Street near Thurlow, a Vancouver police department statement said Tuesday.

When police arrived they found Malli in the car and the second victim a short distance away.

Both victims were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

Malaysian airliner still missing, mysterious radar plot reported (Roundup)

The multinational search operation to locate the Malaysia Airlines plane that went missing Saturday further expanded Wednesday even as a Malaysian official said that an unidentified object was plotted on military radar that fateful day.

Malaysian Air Force Chief Rodzali Daud told reporters at a press conference here that the signal was detected by the military radar at 2.15 a.m. Saturday about 320 km northwest of Penang island.

“I am not saying it’s flight MH370. We are still corroborating this. It was an unidentifiable plot,” he said.

Delhi HC notice to 38 officials on hawkers’ plea

The Delhi High Court Wednesday issued contempt notice to 38 government officials, including the Delhi police commissioner and an MCD councillor, on a plea by hawkers alleging harassment and for flouting the court’s earlier order.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice B.D. Ahmed and Justice Siddharth Mridul issued the contempt notice to Delhi Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi along with 20 other police officials.

Over 500 people from northeast enroll as Delhi voters

The Election Commission received 550 new electoral forms after organising a day-long enrollment campaign for the people from the northeast here Wednesday.

There are over 2.5 lakh voters from the northeastern states in the national capital.

The camp, organised in Chanakyapuri area of south Delhi, was a bid to woo the people from the northeast to take part in the electoral process.

On March 8, a campaign was organised across Delhi to raise awareness and increase the participation of women in the electoral process. A total of 5,000 forms were received by the commission.

Fresh charge sheet against Tunda

Delhi Police Wednesday filed a supplementary charge sheet against Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) bomb expert Abdul Karim Tunda over a 1994 case pertaining to recovery of explosive substances.

The charge sheet was filed before Additional Sessions Judge Bharat Parashar.

Police told the court they would “clarify” the prosecution’s case regarding charges slapped under the stringent Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) against Tunda.

Chhau, Gambhira folk dances for EC awareness drives

The popularity of West Bengal’s vibrant Chhau and Gambhira folk dances will be utilised by the Election Commission (EC) as part of its awareness drives for the voters in the state, an official said Wednesday.

Stressing on awareness drives, especially for first-time voters, the commission has tied-up with Doordarshan to design audio-visual content for these campaigns.

Bengal opposition ridicules Mamata after Ramlila show

West Bengal’s ruling Trinamool Congress was ridiculed Wednesday by the opposition after its disappointing public rally in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan.

After days of build up about the event where social activist Anna Hazare was slated to share the dais with Trinamool leader and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the event flopped, with the Gandhian staying away. The crowds were very thin.

An Anna aide said he was unwell but also claimed that the anti-corruption crusader would have attended the rally had it drawn at least 10,000 people.

Man charged with Indian-American’s murder

A man in the US state of Texas, who was involved in an armed robbery last week, has been charged with murdering an Indian-American man.

Marquis Davis, who was involved in the robbery at a restaurant in Houston on the night of March 6 along with an accomplice, was charged with “aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon” and murdering Stanly Kumbanattel, The American Bazaar news portal reported Tuesday.

Davis was arrested shortly after the robbery by police but his accomplice is still at large.

Patnaik, film star, ex-hockey player among BJD nominees

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, former hockey captain Dilip Tirkey and film star Sidhanta Mohapatra figure in the first list of BJD candidates for the Lok Sabha and assembly elections.

Patnaik, also the party president, named the candidates Wednesday for five Lok Sabha and 30 assembly seats. The names of other candidates would be declared soon, he told reporters.

Patnaik would test his luck again from the Hinjili assembly constituency in Ganjam district.

Russia opens criminal case against Ukrainian officials

Russia has opened a criminal case against Ukrainian Prosecutor General Office in response to Kiev’s earlier decision to start prosecution of the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s commander, the Russian Investigative Committee (IC) said Wednesday.

On March 6, Ukraine announced its decision to open a criminal case against the Black Sea Fleet Commander-in-Chief, Vice-Admiral Alexander Vitko, for his alleged acts of “incitement of high treason and sabotage”.

Russia believes the criminal case opened by Ukraine was aimed at destabilising the situation in Crimea where the Black Sea Fleet is based.

UAE mobilises aid for Pakistan drought victims

The United Arab Emirates Pakistan Assistance Programme (UAE PAP) has mobilised 1500 tonnes of basic food aid including infant formula to be distributed among 20,000 needy families in the drought-affected Tharparkar district in Pakistan’s Sindh province.

In a statement Wednesday, the UAE PAP administration said that under the directives of UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan this was the first global response to the crisis that has threatened 1.2 million people of the region.

Already 67 children have died due to lack of food, poor health care and cold weather.

IRDA legally wrong, SBI Life morally wrong: Insurance experts

The insurance regulator’s direction to SBI Life Insurance Company to refund excess commission of Rs.275.29 crore to policy holders has been questioned by industry experts.

“The IRDA (Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority) is legally wrong in issuing such a direction as it had approved the products in question. Further what SBI Life has done is legally right. Insurers do receive premium in advance and adjust it as and when it becomes due,” R. Ramakrishnan, a member of Malhotra Committee on insurance reforms and a consulting actuary, told IANS.

The Election Commission (EC) Wednesday advised Punjab’s political parties against holding political conferences on the periphery of the Gurdwara Keshgarh Sahib for next week’s Hola Mohalla celebrations in Anandpur Sahib.

Punjab’s Chief Electoral Officer V.K. Singh told the media here the deputy commissioner of Rupnagar (Ropar) district has been directed to advise political parties against holding political meets on the periphery of the gurdwara as it amounts to violation of the model code of conduct.

India’s industrial output up 0.1 percent in January (Roundup)

The index of industrial production (IIP) rose by a marginal 0.1 percent in January, prompting industry bodies to react cautiously.

“The up tick in IIP numbers for the month of January 2014 at 0.1 percent from -0.2 percent in December 2013 is encouraging and it warrants economic recovery going forward,” Sharad Jaipuria, President, PHD Chamber of Commerce said in a statement here.

The growth in IIP, that has been witnessing negative trend since October 2013, has finally shown some signs of recovery in January 2014, the statement added.

28 dead as rain, hailstorms lash Maharashtra

Unseasonal rains accompanied by severe hailstorms have left at least 28 people dead and over 100 others injured across Maharashtra in the past 10 days, officials said here Wednesday.

More than 18,200 homes and dwellings across the state suffered damages as large hailstones battered 29 of the state’s 35 districts.

Over 9,000 livestock comprising big and small farm animals and fowl were also killed as storms swept large parts of the state, barring the coastal areas.

Gangpur take on Maharashtra in national hockey final

Gangpur-Odisha and Maharashtra proved their mettle against Namdhari XI and Mumbai respectively to make a comfortable landing into the final of the National Hockey Championship (Division B) at the Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium here Wednesday.

Both Gangpur and Namdhari XI played strategically in the first semi-final to restrict each other from scoring. The strategy worked well in the first half and the score remained 0-0 at halftime.

Metro tunnel under Ring Road completed

The Delhi Metro Wednesday completed a 1,247-metre tunnel below the busy Ring Road in the 59-km corridor between north Delhi’s Majlis Park and Shiv Vihar in northeast Delhi, officials said.

The tunnel was built from Netaji Subhash Place to Shalimar Bagh using a tunnel boring machine without causing any disturbance to the surface traffic.

The machine was lowered in October 2013.

The tunnel also crossed the elevated viaduct of a currently operational metro corridor.

The new corridor is part of Delhi Metro’s Phase III.

President expresses concern over missing Malaysian airliner

President Pranab Mukherjee Wednesday expressed deep concern and sympathy over the missing Malaysia Airline flight.

“On behalf of the government and people of India and on my own behalf, I wish to convey our deep concern and sympathy to the government of Malaysia and to the families of those who were aboard the Malaysia Airline flight,” Mukherjee said in a message to the King of Malaysia.

“In addition to the many Malaysians and other nationalities, five Indian nationals were also on board the flight,” he added.

India, which is poised to become the third largest aviation market in the world by 2020, offers tremendous opportunities for foreign investors, Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said here Wednesday.
