Uber cab rape case: Fingerprints match, says expert

A forensic expert Friday told a court here that the fingerprints of the women executive allegedly raped by the Uber cab driver matched with the fingerprints obtained from the vehicle in which she was attacked.

Senior scientific officer in the Central Forensic Science Laboratory Harender Prasad told Additional Sessions Judge Kaveri Baweja that a few fingerprints were found in the car, inside which the woman was allegedly raped.

Rebel leader warns of offensive against Ukraine

Alexandr Zakharchenko, leader of independence-seeking insurgents in eastern Ukraine, Friday said the rebel forces were going to step up offensive on Ukrainian positions to capture more government-controlled territories, Xinhua reported.

“We would advance the offensive through to the borders of Donetsk region, but if I see a threat anywhere else, it would be eliminated,” Zakharchenko was quoted by local media as saying during his meeting with students in Donetsk.

Akali Dal-BJP alliance firm: Punjab CM

Amid reports of rift between the Shiromani Akali Dal and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Friday said the alliance in the state is “firm and everlasting”.

“The SAD-BJP alliance is everlasting and firm. It has always stood the test of time and both the parties should not be seen as different from each other,” Badal told reporters Friday in Sangrur district, 150 km from here.

Antique idols stolen from Himachal temple recovered

In a major breakthrough, Himachal Pradesh Police Friday recovered antique idols stolen from a historic temple in Kullu town last month.

Additional Director General Sanjay Kundu told reporters the idol of Lord Raghunath and other idols were recovered.

He said all the idols and ornaments were recovered from the outskirts of the town, about 200 km from here. Robbers involved in the theft were yet to be arrested.

Bengal pays tribute to Netaji on 118th birth anniversary

West Bengal Governor K.N. Tripathi called the youth to draw inspiration from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose to bring out the leader in them as the state paid glowing tributes to the nationalist leader on his 118th birth anniversary Friday.

“The youth today needs to draw inspiration from Netaji and follow his ideals. They need to follow the footsteps of Netaji to bring the leaders in them,” Tripathi said while paying tribute to Bose at his ancestral house, Netaji Bhavan, here.

Be transparent while dealing with US: Congress to government

The Congress Friday asked the BJP-led government to be “transparent” while signing any agreement with the US, and said they (BJP) were now doing something which they had opposed earlier.

Addressing a press conference, Congress leader Anand Sharma “welcomed” US President Barack Obama’s upcoming visit to India and said the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government must be transparent in whatever it does with the US.

“Anything being done with the US has to be within the four corners of our legal framework,” he said, cautioning the government.

With the death of Saudi King Abdullah, the ruler of the world’s largest oil exporter for almost a decade, Friday, his 79-year-old half-brother and former Crown Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud took the pledge of allegiance as the new king.

Born December 1935, Salman is the 25th son of the Saudi kingdom’s founder Abdulaziz Al Saud who conquered his rivals and welded disparate regions of the Arabian Peninsula into a kingdom in 1932, Xinhua reported.

Two killed, over dozen injured in Bihar court blast

Two people — a woman and a police constable — were killed and more than a dozen injured in a bomb blast in a Bihar court Friday. It was not a terror attack but was aimed at helping two undertrial prisoners escape, police said.

Earlier, it was said that three people were killed but police later clarified that one of four seriously injured was mistakenly identified as dead initially due to panic.

A district police officer said a crude bomb exploded within the premises of the Ara civil court in Bhojpur district, about 60 km from the Bihar capital.

PDP names two candidates for Rajya Sabha polls

The PDP Friday named two candidates for the Rajya Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir scheduled to be held Feb 7.

Nazir Ahmed Laway and Fayaz Ahmed are the two candidates, Peoples Democratic Party chief spokesman Naeem Akhtar said here Friday.

Both the candidates had lost last year’s assembly elections.

Laway was defeated by Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami of the Communist Party of India-Marxist from Kulgam assembly seat and Fayaz Ahmed was defeated from Kupwara seat by Bashir Ahmad of the People’s Conference.

D-Link to set up operations in Hyderabad

D-Link Corporation, a Taiwanese multinational networking equipment manufacturing company, plans to set up an office here that will generate 1,000 jobs.

Telangana’s Information Technology Minister K. Tarakarama Rao told reporters Friday that the company’s president A.P. Chen was here recently and he conveyed that they want to set up 1,000 employee offices.

Ex-BJP minister Janardhana Reddy out of jail on bail

Karnataka’s former BJP minister and mining baron G. Janardhana Reddy walked out of the central jail here Friday after three years and four months on conditional bail.

The Supreme Court granted Reddy conditional bail Tuesday in graft cases related to the multi-crore mining scam in Andhra Pradesh and his home state.

“Reddy was freed from the jail after his lawyers produced the CBI court order and furnished two sureties of Rs.10 lakh each, as stipulated by the apex court for his conditional bail,” a jail official told reporters later.

According to the Dawn, a representative of the film’s distributor, Everready Pictures shared the news about the film being banned in Karachi and Islamabad.

“Censor boards in Islamabad and Karachi have decided to ban the film because it portrays a negative image of Muslims and the negative characters in the film also have Muslim names,” the Dawn said.

The Ukrainian government has partially withdrawn troops from Donetsk airport after months of bitter fighting with independence-seeking insurgents, a defence ministry statement said Thursday.

“Yesterday, 20 troops of the Ukrainian armed forces left the terminals of the airport because their positions were destroyed and exposed to direct fire,” Xinhua quoted the statement as saying.
