Pyongyang urges Seoul to take practical measures for dialogue

North Korea Wednesday urged South Korea to show its will to improve inter-Korean ties by taking practical measures and avoid escalation of tensions.

South Korean unification ministry spokesman Lim Byeong-cheol Monday told a press briefing that if North Korea really has the will to resolve pending issues and improve inter-Korean relations, it should come to the dialogue table without repeating its wasting claims any more.

South Korean media outlets also expressed concerns that north-south dialogue may be hard to materialise thanks to no response from Pyongyang to Seoul’s talks offer.

Home secretary Anil Goswami resigns

Home Secretary Anil Goswami resigned Wednesday following a controversy over his alleged role in trying to stall former Congress minister Matang Sinh’s arrest in the multi-crore-rupee Saradha chit fund scam, official sources said.

Goswami met Home Minister Rajnath Singh and submitted his resignation, a home ministry official told IANS.

He had also met Rajnath Singh earlier in the day to explain his position, the official said.

Brazil oil major’s top management to be replaced

Brazilian state-controlled oil company Petrobras, which is mired in a massive corruption scandal, Wednesday said its entire senior management team will be replaced and that the names of the new directors could be announced in two days.

“Petrobras confirms that its board of directors will meet Friday to choose the new management team following the resignation of the president (of the company) and five other senior directors,” the oil giant said in a securities filing.

Kejriwal’s claims on EVMs incorrect: EC

The Election Commission Wednesday termed as “totally incorrect and unacceptable” AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal’s contention that electronic voting machines (EVMs) for the Feb 7 Delhi assembly polls have been tampered with.

“Your comments about tampering of four EVMs in 38-Delhi Cantt assembly constituency is totally incorrect and unacceptable. The commission expected you to ascertain the correct facts on EVMs before making the comment on social media,” the poll panel said in a letter to Kejriwal.

Indian American woman found guilty of foeticide

A US court has found an Indian American woman guilty on charges of foeticide and felony neglect of a dependent after experiencing a miscarriage or what prosecutors claim was actually an illegal abortion.

After six days of trial and testimony, a jury in South Bend, Indiana deliberated for less than five hours before finding Purvi Patel guilty Tuesday, according to ABC News.

Patel faces up to 70 years in prison. She will be sentenced March 6.

Ganguly to follow Kohli, de Villiers, Smith in World Cup

Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly Wednesday said he was looking forward to following Indian vice captain Virat Kohli, South African skipper AB de Villiers and young Australian Test captain Steve Smith in the World Cup.

Ganguly made the comment at a book launch event when asked to name three players he was keen to follow in the big event beginning Feb 14.

Hollande calls for dialogue to fix Greek debt crisis

French President Francois Hollande Wednesday called for a transparent and serene dialogue over the Greek debt crisis, and also for the respect of European Union financial rules.

“A dialogue should take place in transparency and serenity. It should be strengthened to lead to an agreement,” Hollande said.

The French head of state also stressed that Europe should work more to further cement solidarity via pro-growth measures which could help the bloc to boost economic activities and tackle unemployment headache.

One more arrest in Burdwan blast case

A madrassa teacher, said to be a close aide of suspected Burdwan blast mastermind Sheikh Rehmatullah alias Sajjid, has been arrested from West Bengal’s Murshidabad district by the NIA, officials said Wednesday.

Mufazzil Haque, who runs a madrassa in Murshidabad, was arrested from Mukimnagar area Tuesday night for his alleged involvement in recruiting youths for militant group Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB).

National Investigation Agency (NIA) personnel came to know about Haque following the interrogation of four people arrested recently from the state.

Andhra planning industrial city to attract Japanese investors

Andhra Pradesh is planning a separate industrial city to attract investments from Japan Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said Wednesday during a meeting with officials of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

They discussed possible areas of support by JICA to Andhra Pradesh, a statement from the chief minister’s office said.

JICA officials said they will complete master plan of Vizag-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC) by March 2015.

17 soldiers killed in Boko Haram attacks in Cameroon

Three Cameroonian soldiers and 14 Chadian soldiers died and a large number of Boko Haram militants were killed when the group attacked military camps in Fotokol, a border town in Cameroon’s Far North Region neighbouring Nigeria Wednesday morning, military sources told Xinhua news agency.

The sources put the number of Boko Haram militants at around 7,000, adding that they had 30 armoured trucks, about 10 ordinary vehicles and hundreds of motorcycles, as well as sophisticated weapons.

R.K. Jhunjhunwala, 60, landed in trouble after a video went viral in social media in which he allegedly misbehaved with a woman aboard the Mumbai-Bhubaneswar flight.

A case had been registered under the Indian Penal Code for making physical contact and advances involving unwelcome sexual overtures.

Al Kuwait Club terminates Iranian Ghoochan-Nejad’s contract

Iran international striker Reza Ghoochan-Nejad has parted company with Al Kuwait football club by mutual consent.

Ghoochan-Nejad, who scored nine goals in 14 appearances for Al Kuwait, joined the Persian Gulf side in August. The club’s officials had a meeting with the player’s agent and finally decided to terminate his contract Wednesday, reports Xinhua.

It’s undecided whether the Iranian-Dutch striker will remain in Kuwait. Al-Qadsia SC offered $300,000 dollars.

Social security pact with Norway comes into force

A social security agreement between India and Norway to avoid double social security contributions has come into effect from Jan 1, an Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) order said here.

“In pursuance of the social security agreement (SSA) signed with Norway, Government of India has notified it…(it) has come into force with effect from January 1, 2015,” the order said.

10 Taliban militants killed in Afghanistan

Ten Taliban militants were killed and four others injured when Afghan security forces stormed Taliban hideouts in the country’s northern province of Takhar Wednesday, a spokesman for the provincial government said.

“Acting upon intelligence reports, Afghan police in coordination with army units backed by helicopters raided Taliban hideouts in Pul-e-Momin area of Khawjaghar district this morning, leaving 10 rebels dead and injuring four others,” Xinhua news quoted Sunatullah Timor as telling reporters in provincial capital Taluqan, 245 km north of Kabul.

Plan to grow back in size and scale: SpiceJet

Budget passenger carrier SpiceJet plans to grow back in size and scale to what it had achieved in mid-2014.

In a letter to its passengers published in the company’s in-house magazine, SpiceJet’s chief operating officer Sanjiv Kapoor said the airline plans to grow back in size and scale that it had achieved in the middle of 2014.

According to Kapoor, the company plans to reclaim its position as the second largest domestic passenger carrier with 21 percent market share, before legacy issues caught up with it.

Ukraine conflict: Shell hits Donetsk hospital

At least four people were killed and many more wounded when a shell hit a hospital in the rebel-held city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine.

Violence has surged in recent weeks, and the pro-Russian rebels are trying to encircle the key town of Debaltseve, northeast of Donetsk, BBC reported.

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini appealed for a truce to allow civilians to leave the area.

According to Amnesty International, 7,000 people remain in Debaltseve, a major road and rail hub, out of an original population of 25,000 a few days ago.

23 killed in Taiwan plane crash

At least 23 people were killed after a Taiwan TransAsia Airways plane plunged into the Keelung river in Taipei Wednesday morning, 10 minutes after takeoff.

Survivors were taken to nearby hospitals in Taipei and New Taipei, Xinhua reported citing disaster relief authorities. The plane’s two black boxes were recovered and were expected to be deciphered by Wednesday night.

Flight GE235 was headed for Kinmen from Taipei with 53 passengers on board, including 31 from the Chinese mainland, and five crew. Three of the mainland passengers are known to be children.

AAP top in Delhi, finds India Today-Cicero poll

With three days left for the Delhi assembly elections, the TG-CICERO opinion poll projected the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) getting the highest number of seats (between 38- 46 seats) and the BJP between 19-25 seats in the 70-member house.

According to it, the Congress would get between three and seven seats while the other parties would get between zero to two seats.

It said the AAP would get over 43 percent of the votes, the BJP over 35 percent of votes, the Congress 13 percent, down by over 11 percent votes, and the others eight percent votes, a slide of nearly four percent votes.

UN alarmed by ‘IS logo’ on WFP food aid

The UN World Food Programme (WFP) Tuesday said it is “extremely concerned” by images seeming to show that its food parcels in Syria being handed out bore the logo of the Islamic State (IS) militant group.

The pictures on social media appear to be from the town of Deir Haf, where WFP distributed food last August, BBC reported.

“WFP condemns this manipulation of desperately needed food aid,” said Muhannad Hadi, the UN agency’s emergency regional coordinator.

SV Hamburg striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga is injured again and will miss at least the next two games, the struggling Bundesliga club said Tuesday.

Lasogga damaged a right thigh muscle in Monday’s training and will definitely be out for Wednesday’s match in Paderborn and Saturday’s against Hanover, reports Xinhua.

Lasogga, 23, had missed the entire winter break training programme over a similar problem but returned to play for 18 minutes in last Saturday’s 0-2 league defeat against FC Cologne.

Five girls killed in Pakistan well collapse

At least five girls died Tuesday after falling into a well located inside a madrassa in Peshawar, media reported.

Some 25 to 30 girl students, sitting on a slab covering the mouth of a well, fell in when the wall of the well collapsed, Dawn reported citing local police.

Five girls died while eight others were injured. All the students of the madrassa — Islamic school — are girls.

Superintendent of Police Faisal Shehzad confirmed the toll. The dead and the injured girls are 10 to 16 years of age.
