Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and his cabinet colleague T. Radhakrishnan visited superstar Mohanlal, smarting under a backlash for the poor performance of his newly formed musical band Lalisom, at his residence here early Saturday.

The purpose of the visit was to pacify the superstar who had Thursday returned to the organisers of the ongoing National Games a cheque for Rs.1.63 crores he got for his musical band’s debut performance at the opening ceremony of the Games, held in the state capital Jan 31.

Determined to make their vote count, the elderly came out
in large numbers to vote in the Delhi assembly elections Saturday – many with walking aids or leaning for support on others in vignettes that are a ringing endorsement of
India’s democracy.

Ninety-three-year old Shankutla Devi, a resident of B.K. Dutt Colony, came to vote
with a younger member holding her arm for support. Devi said that she ensures that
she never misses any election.

“I feel good about voting, Delhi needs a stable government that could last full
five years under a strong leadership,” she told IANS.

Pakistan sends 12 terrorism-related cases to military courts

The Pakistani military is set to formally begin hearing of terrorism-related cases as the government has sent 12 cases for trial in courts to be headed by army officers.

The government had decided to set up military-led special courts after the Taliban’s brutal attack on an army-run school in Peshawar in December last year that had killed over 140 students and staff.

Protest in Gurgaon after youth’s suicide, traffic disrupted

People in Gurgaon blocked traffic on the busy Sohna road Saturday in protest after a 21-year-old man committed suicide due to alleged harassment by the police.

The protest led to heavy traffic snarls on the Gurgaon-Sohna road.

Hotelier Manish Yadav, a resident of Fazilpur village, committed suicide in his house Saturday. His body was found hanging from a ceiling fan.

Alleging that Yadav took the extreme step because he was being harassed by a police officer, the protesters demanded the immediate arrest of the accused officer.

Palestinian president forms panel on ICC lawsuits against Israel

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas ordered the formation of a committee to follow up lawsuits to be brought to the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Israel in April, media reported Saturday.

Veteran Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat has been nominated chairman of the panel, Xinhua news agency reported citing state-run Wafa news agency.

It will comprise members from various factions, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and intellectuals, according to the report.

Injured pacer Ishant ruled out of World Cup

India pacer Ishant Sharma has been ruled out of the 2015 World Cup due to a knee injury.

He is expected to return to India next week.

Seamer Mohit Sharma, who is currently with the team in Australia, is likely to take his place in the side. He was named as the stand-by for the injured pacer by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) earlier.

“It is confirmed that he has been ruled out. He couldn’t recover from his injury so he had to be ruled out,” a BCCI source told IANS.

Bedi disputes exit poll findings

BJP’s chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi Saturday disputed the exit polls that said that the AAP was most likely to win Delhi’s assembly elections.

“We don’t agree with the exit polls. We are confident the BJP will win in Delhi,” she told the media. “Wait till Feb 10,” she added, referring to the day the votes will be counted.

Ashwini Upadhyay, spokesperson for the Delhi unit of the Bhratiya Janata Party, told IANS: “The people of Delhi want good and strong governance.”

Texas allows Sikh policemen to sport beards, turbans

In one of the biggest goodwill gestures to one of the largest communities in the US — the Sikhs — the state of Texas has allowed on-duty Sikh officers to sport essential Sikh religious symbols like beards and turbans.

According to a Washington Post report Friday, the decision of the county sheriff of greater Houston fulfilled one of the long standing demands of the Sikhs and made the county’s police force one of the first few in the nation — along with those in Washington DC and Riverside, California — to permit Sikhs to wear their “articles of faith” on patrol.

Swachh Bharat: Goa Police to give best station award

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project ‘Swachh Bharat’ campaign has inspired Goa Police to dive into the cleaning act.

Police will launch a ‘Best Police Station of the Year’ award in which cleanliness would be a major criteria, along with hardcore policing activities like investigation, crime prevention, quality of behaviour with the public etc., Inspector General of Police Sunil Garg told IANS Saturday on the sidelines of a prize distribution ceremony for policemen.

“Cleanliness of the police station is one of the important parameters,” he said.

Kerala Tourism holds road shows in Germany

In a bid to attract more visitors from Germany, Kerala Tourism conducted two road shows in Dusseldorf and Berlin early this week.

Held on the 3rd and 5th of this month, the two endeavours were Kerala Tourism’s inaugural road shows in Germany this year.

The delegation was led by Tourism Director P.I. Sheikh Pareeth and included leading private players from the industry here.

“This is the second road show we are conducting in these cities to aggressively market the destinations and tap new markets,” said Kerala’s Tourism Minister A.P. Anil Kumar.

Sunny day in Delhi, light rain expected Sunday

The national capital witnessed another sunny and pleasant day Saturday as the maximum temperatures settled three notches above the season’s average at 25.6 degrees Celsius. Sunday morning will see light fog and there is possibility of some rain in the afternoon.

“There will be light fog early morning tomorrow (Sunday) and in the afternoon, light rain might occur in some parts of the city,” said an official of the India Meteorological Department.

The minimum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 25 and 8 degrees Celsius.

Axis Bank to raise Rs.15,000 crore

Axis Bank Saturday said that it will seek shareholders’ approval to raise Rs.15,000 crore through the issue of long-term bonds or non-convertible debentures to select investors.

According to a filing on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), the bank said it will seek shareholders approval for issue of long-term bonds or non-convertible debentures on a private placement basis.

“The approval of the shareholders is sought for issue of long-term bonds or non-convertible debentures on a private placement basis up to Rs.15,000 crores,” the filing said.

Remove JNNURM irritants, Fadnavis tells centre

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Saturday asked the central government to remove various irritants in the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) to ensure the pending projects are completed on schedule.

“Presently, the JNNURM is over, but many issues pertaining to the scheme remain which the central government must address. Projects taken up under the JNNURM cannot be discarded and need to be completed,” Fadnavis urged at a Consultative Workshop on Urban Governance attended by union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu.

Essel Infraprojects signs MoU with Rajasthan government

Essel Infraprojects Limited Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Rajasthan government for setting up a solar power park of 5,000 MW capacity.

“Managing director of state-owned Rajasthan Renewable Energy Corporation B.K. Dosi and CEO of Essel Infra Ashok Agarwal signed the MoU in the presence of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje,” an official statement said.

Congress to use web, smart-phone application for enrolment

Keen to boost its membership at a politically difficult time for the party, the Congress has decided to come up with web-based “membership enrolment channel” as well as launching a smart phone-based application.

At a meeting of party’s central election authority (CEA) here, party leaders discussed membership drive and changes that the party needs to make in its process of organisational elections.

Party vice president Rahul Gandhi, who was among leaders present at the meeting, is learnt to have said that organisational elections should not be delayed.

US-India share common challenges due to climate change: US envoy

US envoy to India Richard Verma Friday said the recent summit meetings between the two countries converged their interests that were common due to the challenges posed by climate change.

“No one is above law,” the Delhi High Court Friday said while observing that Nitish Katara murder convicts’ hospital visits and admissions were “unwarranted” as they have manipulated the system deliberately.

The court Friday sentenced Vikas Yadav and his cousin Vishal Yadav to 30 years in prison for the murder of Katara, a friend of Vikas Yadav’s sister.

Congress complains to poll panel against BJP

Pakistan detains 10,616 suspects after school attack

Security forces in Pakistan have detained 10,616 suspects on different charges after the savage Taliban attack on an army-run school last December, officials said Friday.

The attack killed over 140 students and staff of the Army Public School in the northwestern city of Peshawar.

Quarter of Russian media faces closure: Journalists union

Nearly a quarter of Russian newspapers, magazines, radio stations and television channels may have to close down this year as a result of the government’s “ill-considered policy” against the media, Moscow Union of Journalists head Pavel Gusev said Friday.

According to union statistics, 60,000 traditional media outlets exist in Russia today, 40,000 of them print publications, gathering an average audience of 100 million.

“Ill-considered state policy against traditional media has resulted in a crisis in the entire information sphere,” Gusev said.

SC to hold fresh hearing on Marans’ plea against summons by 2G court

The Supreme Court Monday recalled its order declining the plea by former communications minister Dayanidhi Maran and his brother Kalanithi Maran challenging their summoning by the 2G special court after CBI filed a charge sheet against them on their alleged role in Aircel-Maxis deal.

India a nearly ‘100 percent banked country’, UN told

India is a “nearly 100 percent banked country” that offers its citizens universal access to financial services aimed at spurring development, a UN commission heard Thursday.

In the five months since the universal banking access programme, Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, was launched, 100 million people have opened bank accounts, Mayank Joshi, a first secretary in India’s UN Mission told the Commission for Social Development.

Uma Bharti apologises for BJP’s Vision Document goof-up
