Afghans prefer Indian investors; to rebuild trade routes

As part of its rebuilding exercise, Afghanistan is focusing on reviving the legendary Silk Route and build new ones preferring Indian businessmen and investors in the process, the war-torn country’s envoy said here Monday.

“Afghanistan is undergoing transition since the last 13 years and during our rebuilding period from 2014-2024, we are focusing on reviving the old trade routes which benefited us in the past as well as build new ones,” Ambassador to India Sahida Mohammad Abdali said on the sidelines of an event organised by Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industries.

Mysuru gets new prince as Wodeyar heir

The Mysuru royal family Monday adopted 22-year-old Yaduveer Gopal Raj Urs as the new prince, and heir of the legendary Wodeyar dynasty.

“The adoption ceremony took place at the auspicious time (1.15-1.50 p.m.) in the decked-up Amba Vilas Palace amid chanting of Vedic hymns and prayers,” a royal member told IANS here, about 150 km from Bengaluru.

Pramoda Devi, widow of Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar, adopted Yaduveer in the presence of the royal family and about 1,000 guests invited for the grand occasion.

Salman trial: Prosecution wants depositions on two key witnesses on record

The prosecution in the hit-and-run accident trial involving Bollywood actor Salman Khan Monday filed an application seeking to lead evidence of two crucial witnesses who were presently not available to the court.

While was was the former police bodyguard of Khan who had first filed the complaint in the accident case and the other was a medico who performed the autopsy on a victim who was killed in the accident in September 2002.

Uber rape case: Prosecution concludes final argument

The prosecution, while concluding final argument in the rape case against an Uber cab driver, told a court Monday that medical and forensic evidence have supported the victim’s version that she was sexually assaulted.

Advancing final arguments in the case, Special Public Prosecutor Atul Shrivastava told Additional Sessions Judge Kaveri Baweja that there was enough evidence to show that the woman executive was raped and accused Shiv Kumar Yadav had also tried to commit unnatural sex with her.

Lost a great friend: Kamal Haasan on R.C Sakthi

Actor-filmmaker Kamal Haasan Monday said he has lost a great friend, following the sudden death of Tamil director R.C. Sakthi.

Haasan said everybody should have a great friend like the Tamil veteran.

Sakthi breathed his last here Monday at a private hospital following old age-related ailments. He was 75.

“He was part of my family. I’ve lost a great friend. It started as a friendship and went on to become a familial relationship. I wouldn’t say one can’t find such a friend. I wish everybody should have such a friend,” Haasan told reporters here.

Different languages spice up Delhi assembly oath-taking

The swearing-in ceremony of the Delhi assembly Monday witnessed a colourful mix of languages including Punjabi, Maithli, Urdu, English and even Sanskrit much to the liking of those present in the house.

While the majority of the 67 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) members took oath in Hindi, some of them preferred other languages, adding the much-needed colour to the usually dreary ceremony.

Assembly members by the name of Jarnail Singh, from Rajouri Garden and Tilak Nigar constituencies, took oath in Punjabi.

52 IS militants killed in Iraq clashes, air strikes

At least 52 Islamic State (IS) militants were killed on Monday in separate clashes and US-led coalition air strikes in Iraq, security sources said.

In Iraq’s western province of Anbar, hundreds of soldiers, police officers, Shia and Sunni militias launched an operation in the militant-seized town of al-Baghdadi, some 200 km northwest of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

They retook control of part of the town, including its main police headquarters, after heavy clashes with the IS militants, Xinhua cited a provincial security source as saying.

Karate master crucifies himself for Jayalalithaa’s return as CM

Karate master Shihan Hussaini Monday got himself crucified for the return of AIADMK general secretary J. Jayalalithaa as the Tamil Nadu chief minister.

The 46-year-old Hussaini, who is known for his daring acts, came out with this out-of-the-box idea — self crucifixion for six minutes and seven seconds — on the eve of Jayalalithaa’s 67th birthday Tuesday.

“It was the most painful experience I have even undergone. I heard it was the most painful and realised that today,” Hussaini told IANS Monday.

President says land act ‘refined’; Hazare, Congress oppose ordinance

President Pranab Mukherjee Monday said the land acquisition act had been “refined” to minimise some procedural difficulties in getting land for critical projects but the Congress and some parties conveyed their firm opposition to the measure and activist Anna Hazare launched a protest.

The president said in his address to the two houses of parliament at the start of budget session that the National Democratic Alliance government attaches paramount importance to safeguarding interests of farmers and families affected by land acquisition.

Facing a virtual revolt from a section of the executive committee over alleged malpractice in the running of the club, embattled Mohun Bagan general secretary Anjan Mitra Monday hit back at his opponents, saying accusations were being levelled at a time when the 125-year-old club was passing through its worst financial crisis.

New SC benches to hear criminal, tax cases on daily basis

To address the backlog of pending cases relating to criminal and taxation matters, the Supreme Court has set up two benches to exclusively hear them on a daily basis when the court resumes work after the Holi break March 9, it was announced Monday.

Apex court registrar M.K.Hanjura Monday said that there were 11,137 criminal cases and 10,843 cases relating to taxation pending before the court.

The move is in pursuance to Chief Justice H.L.Dattu’s initiative to reduce the pendency of the cases by employing the existing strength of the judges.

De Villiers on the edge of suspension

South African skipper AB de Villiers is one game away from suspension after South Africa were fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during its 130-run loss to India Sunday.

The Proteas were ruled to be one over behind by International Cricket Council (ICC) match referee Jeff Crowe after time allowances were taken into consideration.

While De Villiers was fined 20 percent of his match fee, the other team members were docked 10 percent of the fees, reports the Cricket Australia website.

Plea in HC for CBI inquiry into AIIMS graft

A petition has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking a CBI inquiry into various cases of irregularities and corruption in AIIMS raised by then anti-graft officer Sanjiv Chaturvedi.

The public interest litigation (PIL), which is expected to come up for hearing Wednesday, has sought a revival of all cases in which action were initiated by Chaturvedi before he was sacked by then union health minister Harsh Vardhan in August last year from his post as chief vigilance officer of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

Kanhar dam: Green panel pulls up environment ministry

The National Green Tribunal has sought a report from the union environment ministry in the case of the controversial Kanhar dam in Uttar Pradesh within one week, failing which a Rs.25,000 fine would be slapped as it listed the final hearing for March 4.

For the second time in a row, the ministry had failed to comply with the green court’s directive requiring it to submit a compliance report on Feb 19 about the progress made by the Uttar Pradesh government in the Kanhar dam construction since 2008.

11 killed in Afghanistan clashes

At least 11 people were killed and five others injured in clashes between Afghan security forces and Taliban militants Sunday, authorities said.

Six people, including five militants and a police official, were killed in the northern Kunduz province in a clash between security forces and insurgents, police said.

Five insurgents were killed when security forces raided a Taliban hideout in Imam Sahib district of Kunduz province Sunday morning.

Terrific performance by India: Tendulkar

Former batting great Sachin Tendulkar hailed India’s 130-run victory over South Africa here Sunday, saying that it was a “terrific performance” by the defending champions at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

India beat the Proteas to break their jinx of losing to the latter in World Cup matches. The Asian powerhouse had lost all their previous three Cup meetings in 1992, 1999 and 2011 to South Africa.

Over 1 lakh footfall at air show grand finale

Over one lakh people visited the air show Sunday to watch metal birds of different kind soar and roar on the final day of the Aero India trade expo at the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) Yelahanka base on the city’s outskirts.

The meeting was attended by MPs from all political parties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the dinner following the meeting.

Mahajan told the media after the meeting that she was in favour of discussions on all contentious issues including the land acquisition bill within the house.

Army rescues four Kashmiris trapped in snow

The army Sunday said it has rescued four people from a snow-hit area in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district.

“Personnel of the Delta Force rescued four stranded civilians yesterday (Saturday) night when they got trapped in a snow-bound area in Kawalu of Khari tehsil,” army spokesman Colonel Manish Mehta told IANS.

The trapped people were local residents and had gone out for hunting late in the evening. While returning to their village, they got trapped in the snow.

AAP legislator booked for rioting, assault

The Delhi Police has registered a case of rioting and trespassing against AAP legislator from Shahdara Ram Niwas Goel and his son along with three supporters, officials said.

According to the first information report (FIR) filed by complainant Manish Ghai who claims to be a builder, Goel along with his son Sumit and supporters Atul Gupta and Balbir Singh had on the night of Feb 6-7 barged into Ghai’s house – C-273 Vivek Vihar in east Delhi.
