MEA reaches out on Facebook Q & A

As part of its public outreach, India’s external affairs ministry Tuesday held its first question and answer session on Facebook with its spokesperson being flooded with questions from across the world during the 45-minute session, including requests to help out Indians in a Maldives jail.

MEA spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin, who has 257,000 followers on Twitter and regularly updates the social media platform with posts on any new diplomatic event, received around 30 questions. The 45-minute session reached 112,192 Facebook users, with 4,655 likes, comments and shares.

Banerjee calls for withdrawal of ‘draconian’ land ordinance

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Tuesday said her party Trinamool Congress was opposed to land acquisition through force and demanded immediate withdrawal of the “draconian” land ordinance promulgated by the centre.

“Immediately withdraw land ordinance. It is draconian. It will affect the farmers. We have always opposed this,” Banerjee said in a Twitter post.

“We do not support forceful land acquisition,” she said on the day the NDA government came in for strident criticism over the land acquisition bill which was introduced in the Lok Sabha.

Madhya Pradesh exam scam: FIR against governor, 100 others

A Special Task Force (STF) Tuesday registered an FIR against Governor Ram Naresh Yadav and 100 others in the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board (MPPEB) or Vyapam scam, sources said.

Additional Director General of Police (STF) Ashish Khare told the media that the first information report (FIR) was lodged over the recruitment of forest guards.

Those named in the FIR include 88 candidates and 11 middlemen and other people.

They have been charged under relevant sections of the IT Act and the Prevention of Corruption Act.

12 killed in second attack in Nigeria

At least 12 people were killed in a bomb attack at a bus station in the Nigerian city of Kano Tuesday, a media report said, barely five hours after a similar attack hit a crowded bus station in Potiskum town killing 14 people.

According to a witness, at least 12 bodies were recovered from the scene of the attack, according to a Xinhua report.

Several people were also injured, the witness added.

A member of the local transport union said the toll might increase as rescue workers were still searching the area.

Bangladesh opposition extends countrywide strike till Friday

Bangladesh’s opposition alliance led by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) decided Tuesday to extend the ongoing nationwide strike till Friday morning, protesting against the “killing of opposition supporters”.

BNP’s joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed said in a statement that the law enforcement agencies were killing opposition supporters and dumping their bodies on farmlands and in water bodies, according to a Xinhua report.

He also blamed authorities of involving opposition supporters in false cases and conducting mass arrests of opposition leaders and activists.

Tourism minister pays surprise visit to Taj Mahal

Union Tourism Minister Mahesh Sharma paid a surprise visit to the Taj Mahal Tuesday evening, to look into the issues ailing the structure, following a directive from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He was accompanied by union minister of state for human resource development Ram Shankar Katheria and local tourism industry leaders.

The minister said the monument required strategies to control crowds and eliminate touts.

The minister asked the Archaeological Survey of India and the department of tourism to green the Taj Corridor between the Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal.

BJP-PDP to form Kashmir government, Mufti to be CM March 1

The BJP was poised to create history, getting a partnership role in governing Jammu and Kashmir for the first time as it on Tuesday announced a coalition with the PDP after both arrived at an “agreement on a common minimum programme” to govern the state.

Peoples Democratic Party patron Mufti Mohammad Sayeed will be sworn in as the chief minister March 1.

Bharatiya Janata Party president Amit Shah Tuesday announced that both parties had arrived at an agreement for a coalition government, with the BJP for the first time getting a governance role in India’s northernmost state.

Swine flu: Bengal to open more testing centres

The West Bengal government Tuesday decided to open more swine flu testing centres at the city’s School of Tropical Medicine and the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Darjeeling district.

The decision was taken at a high level meeting presided over by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the state secretariat “Nabanna” of neighbouring Howrah town.

Home health services provider Nightingales plan expansion

Nightingales Home Health Services Tuesday plans to invest $40- $50 million to expand its home health services to 16 major cities in India.

Announcing launch of its services in Hyderabad, Nightingales CEO Lalit Pai told reporters here Tuesday that the company would have pan-India presence in three to five years.

Hyderabad will be the second city to be covered by the company after Bengaluru, where it is providing 85,000 patient services at home.

Female US citizen abducted in Nigeria

Police in central north Nigeria’s Kogi state confirmed Tuesday that unknown gunmen Monday kidnapped an American woman doing missionary work in the state.

State police spokesperson Sola Collins Adebayo told reporters in Lokoja, the state capital, that the gunmen stormed a school premises around 10 a.m. shooting sporadically to scare away people before taking her away into the bush, Xinhua news agency reported.

CRPF trooper killed, 8 wounded in Bihar blast

A CRPF trooper was killed while eight were wounded in a blast triggered by Maoists Tuesday evening in Bihar’s Gaya district, an officer said.

The blast took place when the paramilitary personnel were patrolling in Domaria in Gaya district, around 120 km from state capital Patna, said an officer of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

The condition of three of the injured is serious, the officer said.

Nine killed in Czech shooting

At least eight people were killed in a shooting attack in the eastern Czech Republic town of Uhersky Brod on Tuesday, according to media reports.

An armed man burst into a restaurant and opened fire, BBC reported, citing Czech media. Some 20 people were thought to have been in the restaurant at the time and eight of them were reportedly killed.

The condition of the gunman was unconfirmed, but a police spokesman said the suspect had “already been subdued”.

This was the third shooting attack on major European cities in the last two months.

58 killed in bomb attacks, airstrikes in Iraq

Up to 58 people were killed in separate bomb attacks and airstrikes in central and northern Iraq Tuesday, security sources said.

In Iraq’s northern central province of Salahudin, a bomb exploded near a group of young men who were gathered at a recruitment centre at a military base near the town Amerli, some 70 km east of the provincial capital Tikrit.

The blast killed three recruits and wounded five others, a provincial security source told Xinhua news agency on condition of anonymity.

Fifth swine flu death in Himachal

Swine flu Monday claimed the fifth life in Himachal Pradesh and four new cases were detected, a health department official said.

The death of a woman due to swine flu was reported in the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla, surveillance officer Rajesh Guleri told IANS.

The 34-year-old patient belonged to Nirmand in Kullu district.

He said four new positive cases were reported in the IGMCH.

A patient died in the Rajendra Prasad Medical College and Hospital at Tanda town in Kangra district Sunday.

Himachal government to take over cricket body land

The Himachal Pradesh government will take over the land allotted to the state cricket body and develop it into a multipurpose stadium, Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said Monday.

“The process of taking over the ‘chougan’ (ground) in Nurpur from the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) is almost complete,” the chief minister said in Nurpur town in Kangra district.

He said the government will develop a multipurpose stadium there.

The chief minister was in Nurpur to inaugurate projects, including a Rs.32-lakh block office complex-cum-block development officers’ residence.

India, Bahrain to start talks on defence cooperation

India and key Gulf partner Bahrain have agreed to start negotiations on an MoU on defence cooperation as well as inking of an agreement on internal security during their first High Joint Commission (HJC) here co-chaired by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Bahraini counterpart Shaikh Khalid Bin Ahmed Bin Mohamed Al Khalifa.

In a joint statement issued Monday, both sides welcomed holding of the first meeting of the High Joint Commission Sunday, and agreed that the commission at the level of foreign ministers reflects accurately the depth and strength of bilateral ties.

Mamata seeks joint effort to contain swine flu

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Monday asked all concerned to work together to take all necessary remedial measures to check the outbreak of swine flu in the country instead of getting “panicky”.

“It is time for the central government, state governments and NGOs to work together to take all necessary remedial measures,” Banerjee said in a Facebook post.

Noting that the incidents of swine flu have been increasing, she expressed concern over the situation.

Uber rape case: HC to hear accused’s plea to recall witnesses Tuesday

The Delhi High Court Tuesday will hear rape-accused Uber cab driver Shiv Kumar Yadav’s plea seeking direction to recall 28 prosecution witnesses in the case for further cross examination.

Justice Sunita Gupta to hear the plea which also challenged the trial court’s order that denied him permission to recall the witnesses. Yadav said he was not given a fair opportunity to defend himself in the case.

The trial court Feb 18 rejected Yadav’s plea saying it as an attempt to “delay the proceedings”.

The prosecution Jan 31 completed recording of evidence in just 17 days.

Notice to four Bengal hospitals for not treating swine flu

The West Bengal government has slapped show cause notices on four hospitals for discharging swine flu patients without treatment, an official said Monday.

Three of the offending hospitals are situated in the city. Another one is in the suburbs.

“There are allegations that these hospitals had released patients when they came to know they have been infected by the H1N1 virus that causes swine flu. None of the patients were fit to be discharged,” said a state health department official.

The government has started a probe.

Akhilesh Yadav to present budget Tuesday

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav, who holds the finance portfolio, will be presenting the budget for 2015-16 in the state assembly on Tuesday.

The cabinet chaired by Akhilesh Yadav Monday approved budget proposals for various departments, an official said.

The cabinet gave its green signal to more than a dozen major proposals for which funds have been earmarked. Under the new proposals, a new tehsil has been sanctioned for Mughalsarai while a quality control mechanism for the Agra Lucknow Expressway has also been approved by the state cabinet.

India should realize potential of soft power: Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday said it was time for India to “realize the potential of soft power” as an important strategy for external affairs and foreign relations.

Inaugurating the first international “Ramayana Mela” here, Modi said that “world affairs were no longer on one track”.

“India should leverage its great traditions and culture in forging ties with countries around the world in a way that is deeper, more personal, and therefore, far more powerful,” he said.

India-Nepal joint motor rally to promote friendship

A joint India-Nepal motor rally will be flagged off on February 27 from Puri in Odisha to promote connectivity, people-to-people contact, and spiritual and adventure tourism in both the countries, India’s Ambassador to Nepal Ranjit Rae said here Monday.

“The rally is aimed at strengthening Nepal-India people-to-people exchanges and to sustain the momentum following the historic visits of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Nepal last year,” the envoy said.

The first Indo-Nepal Friendship Motor Rally will cover more than 2,500 km before concluding in New Delhi on March 8.

Rajasthan to set up heritage council

Rajasthan on Monday decided to set up a heritage council under the chief minister for conservation, regulation and maintenance of heritage structures of historical and archaeological importance.

The Rajasthan Heritage Conservation Bill, 2014 would be tabled in the state assembly during the budget session that would begin Feb 25, the state’s Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rajendra Singh Rathore told the media here.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje Monday.

US asks India to remove obstacles in bilateral trade

The US wants India to remove obstacles in the way of boosting two-way trade by improving the ease of doing business, by giving confidence to investors through legal certainty, enforceability and transparency.

US Ambassador Richard Verma Monday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made rationalisation of bureaucratic procedure a high priority on his list of reforms and that the US eagerly anticipates substantial progress in this direction.

Modi condoles deaths in Bangladesh ferry accident

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday condoled the loss of lives in a ferry accident in Bangladesh.

“My prayers are with the families of those who lost their lives in the accident in Bangladesh,” the prime minister said in a statement.

An overloaded ferry, carrying over 100 people, capsized Sunday after being hit by a cargo trawler in Padma river in Bangladesh. The toll has reached 69.
