Police killing of black teenager sparks protest in US

A 19-year-old unarmed African American was killed by a police officer in Madison, Wisconsin on Friday evening, sparking protests.

According to police, the teenager, identified by local media as Tony Robison, was shot dead during a confrontation with the officer who was responding to reports of a man walking in traffic and hitting pedestrians, according to Xinhua.

The officer followed the suspect to a residence and shot him when he was attacked.

Shortly after the incident, more than 100 protesters gathered at the scene.

Congress’ Mala Roy joins Trinamool

In a shot in the arm for the Trinamool Congress, Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor and Congress leader Mala Roy – a known critic of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee – joined the state’s ruling party on Saturday.

Roy, who unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha polls from South Kolkata last year, met Trinamool supremo Banerjee before her formal induction.

“I have quit the Congress. I want to work for the people and I was not getting the chance,” Roy said after her meeting with Banerjee.

Tamil Nadu to get additional power from Kudankulam n-plant

The central government on Saturday assured Tamil Nadu of 100 MW additional power from the second 1,000 MW nuclear power plant at Kudankulam, said a state government release.

According to the release, Union minister of state for power, coal, new and renewable energy Piyush Goyal called on Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam at the state secretariat.

At the meeting, responding to the state government’s request for 15 percent of the unallocated power from the Kudankulam plant, Goyal assured supply of 100 MW.

Obama administration backs gay marriages in Supreme Court

The Obama administration called state bans on same-sex marriage “incompatible with the constitution”, as a brief was filed in the US Supreme Court in support of couples challenging such bans in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee, a media report said on Saturday.

“The marriage bans challenged in these cases impermissibly exclude lesbian and gay couples from the rights, responsibilities and status of civil marriage,” CNN cited Solicitor General Donald B. Verrilli Jr. as saying.

49 on Taiwan fishing boat missing in south Atlantic

A 49-strong crew on a Taiwan-registered fishing boat has been unaccounted for since losing contact on February 26 in the south Atlantic, Xinhua reported on Saturday.

The missing included two from Taiwan, 11 from China, 21 from Indonesia, 13 from the Philippines and two from Vietnam, the fishery authority was quoted as saying.

The boat sailed off from Kaohsiung in January to the sea area 1,700 sea miles east of the Falkland Islands for fishing and was due to return in May.

Spectrum auction sees bids of Rs.86,000 crore at end of Day Four

After Day Four of e-auctions for radio frequency spectrum or airwaves for telecom operators on Saturday, the government had a total commitment of Rs.86,000 crore in terms of highest bids from the eight companies in the fray over 24 rounds, an official statement said here.

This is nearly double the amount the finance ministry had budgeted for from sale of spectrum this fiscal at Rs.43,161.72 crore, as also one-time spectrum fee and other license-related levies.

Kejriwal asks Delhi men to learn from women

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Saturday called on men “to learn from women” and make the national capital a city where “every woman feels free and lives happily”.

Mukherjee condoles Karthikeyan’s death

President Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday condoled the death of G. Karthikeyan, speaker of the Kerala legislative assembly, saying he made “immense contribution” to the state.

Sri Lanka will be forced to make at least two changes for Sunday’s crunch cricket World Cup clash with Australia here, with veteran spinner Rangana Herath ruled out and batsman Dimuth Karunaratne being sidelined for the rest of the tournament.

The 36-year-old, left-armer Herath has been ruled out after splitting the webbing between his spin fingers in the side’s last win over England, reports cricket.com.au.

Sri Lanka armed men abduct Indian fishermen

Armed Sri Lankan fishermen have allegedly abducted seven fishermen from the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, demanding a ransom from their families, local media reported.

The fishermen from Pamban town of Tamil Nadu were abducted by the Sri Lankan fishermen when setting out to sea late on Wednesday, Xinhua reported on Friday.

The Sri Lankans called the relatives of the abducted fishermen on their mobile phones, asking for money.

The amount of ransom was not disclosed by the media, quoting the abductors as saying that it could be “negotiable”.

Pakistan arrests 46 Indian fishermen

Pakistani authorities have arrested 46 Indian fishermen and seized their boats for allegedly violating the country’s territorial waters in the Arabian Sea, officials said.

The fishermen were detained by the Maritime Security Agency (MSA) on Friday after they strayed into Pakistani waters for fishing illegally, a MSA statement said, Xinhua reported.

BMC spent Rs.106 crore on court cases in 13 years

The BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation, India’s richest civic body, spent Rs.106 crore in 13 years to fight big and small court cases, a RTI query revealed Friday.

The cases mainly pertained to illegal constructions around the city, and other litigation, with a single lawyer, K.K. Singhvi, being paid Rs.19.13 crore as fees for his services, the RTI query filed by prominent activist Anil Galgali said.

He had sought the details of the legal expenditure incurred by the BMC, the expenses on lawyers’ fees and total number of cases being fought by them.

UST Global launches app on women’s safety

UST Global – the biggest employer of IT professionals in Kerala – Friday launched its mobile-based app for women’s safety, ahead of the International Women’s Day on March 8.

The app was unveiled by Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala here in the presence of high ranking police officers.

To start with, the app – iSafe – has been rolled out for Thiruvananthapuram City Police and would soon be made available in other cities.

The app is currently available for Android phones and will soon be available on other platforms.

No breakthrough in talks with India: Aziz

Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s key advisor, Sartaj Aziz, admitted there was no breakthrough in the recently held talks between the India and Pakistan on foreign secretary level, however, he said these talks have opened path for future negotiations.

“There was no date fixed for the next round of talks,” Sartaj Aziz told media on the sidelines of a book launching ceremony here, Dawn reported.

US officials, Japanese delegation visit Sri City

Officials from the US consulate general in Chennai and a delegation from Japan separately visited Andhra Pradesh’s Sri City on Friday.

They visited the industrial city located in Nellore district for a first hand knowledge of the infrastructure and other facilities.

The team of officials from the US consulate included John Fleming, principal commercial officer for South India.
