Boko Haram pledges allegiance to Islamic State

In an audio message posted online, the Boko Haram militant group has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) radical Islamist group, a media report said on Sunday.

“We announce our allegiance to the caliph of the Muslims … and will hear and obey in times of difficulty and prosperity, in hardship and ease, and to endure being discriminated against, and not to dispute about rule with those in power, except in case of evident infidelity regarding that which there is a proof from Allah,” said Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau in the message posted on Twitter on Saturday.

BJP should explain release of Hurriyat leader: Nitish

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Sunday targeted the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the release of a hardline Hurriyat leader in Jammu and Kashmir.

“The BJP is responsible for the latest happenings in Jammu and Kashmir as it is in power there. The party has to explain to the people the release of a hardliner by the state government,” Nitish Kumar told the media.

He said the Bharatiya Janata Party was in so much hurry to grab power in Jammu and Kashmir that it compromised with the ideological principles of Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.

Four kids burnt to death in Ghaziabad car blast

Four children were burnt to death in Ghaziabad on Sunday afternoon when fire crackers kept inside a car in which they were sitting exploded, police said.

The incident took place in Farookh Nagar locality in Sahibabad.

Police said the explosion took place in the car in which fire crackers were kept to be taken to a wedding.

Car owner Mohammad Rizwan — who has a business of manufacturing fire crackers — had allowed five children from his family and neighbours to listen to music in the car.

Actor Aditya Pancholi nabbed for pub brawl, gets bail

Bollywood actor Aditya Pancholi was arrested on Sunday for a brawl in a pub, officials here said adding that he was later granted bail by a Mumbai magistrate.

“Aditya Pancholi was arrested today (Sunday) morning… He had a fight with one of the bouncers at a pub in Hotel Sea Princess,” an official told IANS.

According to police, Pancholi, 50, assaulted a security guard (bouncer) at the pub. The incident occurred around Saturday midnight at the Trilogy Pub in Hotel Sea Princess, adjacent to Juhu Beach.

Man arrested after spending night on roof of Britain’s parliament

A 23-year-old man was arrested on Sunday morning after spending about eight hours on the roof of Britain’s parliament building, media reports said.

Police arrested the man on suspicion of criminal damage and trespassing. So far, the reason as to why he stayed on the roof was not known, Scotland Yard said.

Media reports said the man showed up at around 9 p.m. on Saturday. The police officers, negotiators and fire police were called at the scene 15 minutes later, according to Xinhua.

Vice president condoles Vinod Mehta’s death

Vice President Hamid Ansari on Sunday condoled the death of senior journalist Vinod Mehta, saying he was one of those scribes who would express his views and opinions in a “fearless and outspoken manner”.

“Vinod Mehta was amongst those eminent journalists and writers of our times, who expressed their views and opinions in a fearless and outspoken manner, especially on issues of public interest and concern,” Ansari said in a statement issued here.

Modi will certainly visit Pakistan next year: Sartaj Aziz

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will “certainly visit” Pakistan next year, the country’s top foreign affairs adviser Sartaj Aziz said on Sunday.

Pakistan will host the summit of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in 2016, of which India is a member along with Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

“We are fully hopeful that the Indian prime minister will come to Pakistan for the SAARC summit,” Sartaj Aziz said in Islamabad, according to Xinhua.

Joint India-Nepal military exercise concludes

The joint India-Nepal defence exercise aimed at creating greater understanding between the armies of the two neighbouring nations has concluded, an official statement said on Sunday.

The objective of the exercise is also to develop inter-operability in jungle warfare and counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrain.

“Eighth India-Nepal combined exercise which commenced on February 23, 2015 concluded on March 7, 2015 at Salijhandi, Nepal. The exercise was conducted under the aegis of the Nepalese Army,” the statement said.

Russian court extends suspects’ detention in Nemtsov case

All five suspects related to the murder of Russian opposition politician Boris Nemtsov will continue to be held in custody, a court in Moscow said on Sunday.

According to Moscow’s Basmanny district court, Shagid Gubashev’s term of detention will last until May 7, 2015, while Ramzat Bakhayev and Tamerlan Eskerkhanov will be kept in custody until May 8, 2015.

Meanwhile, the court extended the detention of both Anzor Gubashev and Zaur Dadayev until April 28, 2015.

Brothers kill parents in Bihar over land dispute

Two brothers at a village in Bihar’s Banka district killed their parents and brother-in-law allegedly for registering the family land in their sister’s name instead of them, police said on Sunday.

Singho Tanti, 80, his wife Urmila Devi, 75, and their son-in-law Arvind Tanti, 35, were killed with a sharp axe in Laxmaniyatari village.

The accused – Vinod Tanti and Subodh Tanti – are absconding.

Thousands bid farewell to Karthikeyan

Thousands of people turned up at various places on Sunday to bid goodbye to Kerala speaker G. Karthikeyan, who passed away on Saturday after battling liver cancer for the past few months.

His body was brought to his official residence here on Saturday from Bengaluru where he died.

The compound of his official residence which is next door to the Kerala Legislative assembly was thrown open to all and till Sunday morning, thousands of people from all walks of life came to pay their last respects.

The Editors Guild of India on Sunday condoled the death of senior journalist Vinod Mehta.

“In the passing of Vinod Mehta, the media world has lost a liberal, independent voice and the world of public discourse in India a reflective contributor who spoke his mind without rancour or fear,” it said in a statement here.

The veteran journalist, who built up several publications, including Outlook magazine, was a mentor and guide to scores of journalists.

22 arrested over Nagaland lynching

Twenty-two people have so far been arrested for their alleged involvement in the lynching of a rape accused in Nagaland’s Dimapur town, officials said on Sunday.

The government also blocked SMS and MMS services across the state in a move to control the social media, which had seemingly played a role in instigating the mob for the violence.

An irate mob had broken into the central jail in Dimapur on Thursday, dragged out the rape accused, stripped him naked and paraded him in the streets and finally brutally thrashed him to death.

Woman alleges gang rape in moving car in Ludhiana

Police here in Punjab on Sunday registered a case after a 21-year-old woman alleged that she was gang-raped by three youths in a moving car.

Police said the woman told them she was gang-raped by the youths late on Saturday night on the busy Ferozepur road in this industrial city, 120 km from Chandigarh.

The woman works in a leading hotel here and hails from Himachal Pradesh. She was admitted to the civil hospital here for treatment and medical examination.

The accused have not been identified so far.

Modi ‘eagerly awaiting’ Seychelles, Mauritius, Sri Lanka visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said he was looking forward to enhancing India’s ties with the friendly Indian Ocean countries of Seychelles, Mauritius and Sri Lanka during his five-day visit beginning March 10.

In a series of tweets from his Twitter handle @narendramodi, linked to the Facebook account, Modi said the Indian Ocean region “is a region of great inspiration for us and India attaches paramount importance to strengthening relations with this region”.

On his first destination, Seychelles, Modi said he was “eagerly awaiting” his visit on March 11.

Tiger cub found dead in Ranthambore

A tiger cub was found dead on Sunday at the Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan, a forest department official said.

“A tiger cub, around one year old, and belonging to the T-8 tigress, was found dead today (Sunday) in Zone 6 (Kundal area) of the park. We conducted a post-mortem examination and found that the cub was either killed by a tiger or by some other wild animal,” a forest department official told IANS over phone.

As per the official, the tiger population in the park is presently estimated at around 60, including cubs.

Three killed, 11 injured in Mizoram road accident

Three people, including a Border Security Force (BSF) trooper, died and 11 others were injured in a road accident in Mizoram on Sunday, police said.

“Two people, including a BSF head constable, were killed on the spot when their speeding vehicle overturned,” a police officer said.

“Twelve others were injured in the accident and they were admitted to a government hospital. Another person succumbed to his injuries in the hospital,” the police officer said.
