SC asks BJP, Congress if they would form Delhi government (Lead)

The Supreme Court Friday issued notice to the BJP and the Congress asking them whether they were willing to explore the possibility of forming an alternate government in Delhi.

A bench of Justice R.M. Lodha and Justice N.V. Ramana issued notice as it was told that the entire justification for keeping the Delhi assembly under suspended animation was with an eye to possible defections in the existing legislative party groups of different political parties.

Prestigious human rights award for Pakistani women’s group

A Pakistani women’s rights group was conferred a top human rights award in Ireland Friday for its work in the terror-dominated tribal region of Pakistan.

Hollywood actor, and founder of the J/P Haitian Relief Organisation, Sean Penn presented the Frontline Defenders Award for 2014 to the Society for Appraisal and Women Empowerment in Rural Areas (SAWERA) in Ireland’s capital Dublin at a function, the Irish Times reported.

Penn said he was in awe of the work by all the nominees for the award.

Violation of rights of disabled rising: NHRC

In the ever-increasing complaints received by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), a lot pertain to violation of the rights of the disabled, chairman of the rights panel K.G. Balakrishnan said Friday.

“The number of complaints received by the NHRC is increasing every year and a lot of these pertain to human rights violations of such people,” Balakrishnan said. He was speaking at the inauguration of a three-day National Moot Court Competition on Human Rights in the capital.

He stressed on the need to address the concerns of the vulnerable sections of society.

Court issues notice on alumni, sibling points in nursery admission

The Delhi High Court Friday declined to give relief to parents seeking to quash the points allotted to alumni and siblings in the nursery admission process this year and issued notice to the city government on the plea.

Justice Manmohan sought a response by July 25.

The lt. governor in guidelines issued Dec 18, 2013 allotted five points to alumni while 20 points were allotted to siblings in the same school.

Video of police brutality in South Africa sparks furore

A video featuring South Africa Police Service (SAPS) personnel severely assaulting a naked man on a Cape Town street went viral on the internet Friday sparking furore.

The assault took place outside a bar in Cape Town’s central business district Thursday, media reported.

The video was filmed by an office worker in a nearby building showing two policemen beating up a man who was naked, next to a car.

Along with the two policemen, two officers from Central City Improvement District (CCID) and a private security guard were also present at the scene, according to IOL online.

Ukraine vetoes Crimea’s referendum,Russia to respect choice (Roundup)

Ukrainian parliament Speaker Alexandr Turchynov Friday signed a decree vetoing the Crimean parliament’s decision to hold a referendum on joining Russia even as a top Russian legislator said Russia will respect any choice made by the Crimean people.

Under the Constitution of Ukraine as well as the Constitution of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, any regional referendum is illegal, Xinhua quoted Turchnyov’s decree as stating.

The issue could be settled only by a nationwide referendum approved by the country’s parliament, it said.

Robber caught red handed in Delhi

A police patrol arrested a robber in the act while he was trying to rob a person after assaulting him, police said Friday.

Sonu, 23, was arrested when was he trying to rob one Musafik Alam in Kapashera locality of south Delhi after assaulting him.

Alam raised an alarm when he saw the police patrolling van passing by. Though Sonu tried to escape, he was overpowered by the constables and arrested.

“A mobile phone and Rs.2,000 in cash was recovered from him,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Suman Goyal.

Bullet in post,letter bombs found in North Ireland

A bullet was found sent in the post to a primary school in Tobermore in Northern Ireland, said an official statement released Friday by the office of the first minister of Northern Ireland.

Another report from Britain’s Sky News Friday said letter bombs were also spotted at postal sorting offices in Londonderry and Lisburn of Northern Ireland, while local media reported at least one of them was addressed to Maghaberry Prison in Lisburn.

UP governor stresses on quality education

Uttar Pradesh Governor B.L. Joshi Friday laid emphasis on quality education and said merely constructing a beautiful building for an institute would not deliver the goods to society.

He said India would have to raise the level of education, employ good academicians and select students who are not money-minded if the country wished to make a mark against foreign competitors.

Notice to 3 states over debt bondage of workers

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Friday issued notice to the governments of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu over the debt bondage of more than three lakh workers in the three states.

Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports, the NHRC asked the chief secretaries of the states to submit a factual report within two weeks.
