Lajpat Nagar heist: All 13 accused arrested

With the arrest of three more people, Delhi Police have solved the more than Rs.7 crore heist that occurred in south Delhi in January, it was said Saturday.

The incident happened Jan 28, in which robbers looted over Rs.7 crore at gun point near the Moolchand flyover.

With the arrest of the three identified as Praveen, Gulzar and Tilak from Mohali (Punjab) following a tip-off, the police have arrested all the 13 involved in the crime.

Serious concerns about terrorism in Pakistan: Foreign secretary

India has serious concerns about terrorism in Pakistan and there were “harsh realities” in that country which need to be recognized, Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh said Saturday.

“We have to deal with Pakistan in the best manner possible given the fact that we cannot respond to terrorism with terrorism. We are seen as a force for moderation, reason, stability and good sense and that is a huge asset that we should never let go,” Sujatha Singh said at an interaction with women journalists here on the occasion of International Women’s Day.

Special camps for voters Sunday

The Election Commission will hold special camps across the country Sunday to help voters check if their names are included in the electoral rolls.

The commission’s move comes in wake of the complaints that some people with EPIC (Elector Photo Identity Card) in the past have been denied the right to vote because their names were not found in the electoral rolls.

The camps will be organised in all polling stations, where booth officers will have the electoral rolls displayed.

Delhi law student beaten, dies

A law student died here Saturday after being beaten up by two other students over a row over parking outside their college, police said. The assailants were arrested.

Ayush, 22, a first year student of a private college in east Delhi, was attacked up by Amit Nagar and Tanuj Tiwari outside the college gate Friday afternoon, police said.

He was taken to a government hospital from where he was referred to another hospital where he died Saturday morning.

Pakistan military says Afghan forces fired 25 mortar rounds

Pakistan’s military says that Afghan security forces fired over two dozen mortars into its territory Saturday but no one was hurt.

The incident occurred at a time when the execution of 23 Pakistani security personnel by the Pakistani Taliban and the killing of 21 Afghan soldiers in Kunar province increased diplomatic tensions between the neighbors.

Pakistan says that the Pakistani Taliban had executed the security men on the Afghan side of the border last month.

Egypt unveils long-waited presidential election law

Egypt’s interim President Adli Mansour has approved and issued a long-waited new law regulating the country’s upcoming presidential election, officials said Saturday.

The law, consisting of 60 articles in seven chapters, requires that presidential candidates must be Egyptian and born to Egyptian parents. Neither the candidate nor any of his or her parents or spouse must have nationalities of any other state.

“This step paves the way for the second phase of the future roadmap,” Xinhua quoted Ali Awad, Mansour’s legal and constitutional adviser, as saying.

Mohammedan Sporting hold Mohun Bagan to goal-less draw

Mohammedan Sporting and Mohun Bagan played out a goalless draw in a round 20 encounter of the Airtel I-League at the Salt Lake Stadium here Saturday.

It was 0-0 back in November as well while two other clashes in other competitions this season also ended all square. The result takes Mohun Bagan’s points tally to 21 points from 19 outings while Mohammedan Sporting are on 17 with two games in hand.

BJP rebels in Himachal to support AAP

An outfit comprising Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rebels Saturday announced it would support the AAP (Aam Aadmi Party) in all four Lok Sabha seats in Himachal Pradesh for the May 7 polls.

“Our fight is basically against corruption and since AAP is also fighting on the same front, we have decided to extend support to it,” Himachal Lokhit Party (HLP) president Maheshwar Singh told IANS here.

He said his party would neither go back to the BJP nor would support the Congress.

Chief Justice of India P. Sathasivam Saturday urged the legal fraternity to make the poor aware of the legal services they could avail for a better life.

Speaking at the 12th all-India meet of State Legal Services Authorities here, he observed that the legal officials were duty-bound to ensure the poorest of poor got free legal aid.

Rajasthan register first win in national hockey

Rajasthan beat Gujarat 3-2 in a Group A clash to record their first win in the fourth Hockey India Senior Men National Championship 2014 being played at the Major Dhyan Chand Hockey Stadium here Saturday.

Both teams gave a tough fight to each other in the first half and it was Gujarat who opened the scoring.

Vijay Thapa converted a good pass in the 14th minute of the match to give his team the lead.

Khobragade incident led to misunderstanding with US’

The Devyani Khobragade incident caused a certain “misunderstanding” in relations but India has “insulated” that issue from the rest of its relationship with America, India’s Foreign Secretary Sujatha Singh said here Saturday.

Two men convicted in the Dec 16, 2012 gang rape case and facing trial for allegedly robbing a carpenter on the same day Friday claimed before a court they had not beaten up or robbed the victim in the bus as they were not in the vehicle.

Accused Vinay Sharma, recording his statement before Additional Sessions Judge Daya Prakash, said he had gone to a music event organised by a church in the DDA district park in Hauz Khas of south Delhi.

Akshay Thakur said he was not in the bus since he had left for his village in Bihar, a day prior to the incident.

IAF lifts 425 stranded passengers between Leh and Jammu

The Indian Air Force Friday lifted 425 stranded passengers between Leh town of Jammu and Kashmir’s Ladakh region and Jammu city on a request by the local administration, a defence spokesman said.

“Indian Air Force (IAF) once again came to the assistance of stranded civilian people today (Friday) when it launched special sortie to airlift 425 stranded passengers from Leh to Jammu and Jammu to Leh on being requisitioned by the civil administration,” said the spokesman.

SC moved to stay decision doubling gas prices

NGO Common Cause Friday moved the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the government decision doubling the price of gas produced from Reliance Industries Limited-operated KG D-6 field that would become effective April 1.

It said the decision, doubling the gas price from $4.2 to $8.4 per MMBTU, was “arbitrary, malafide, unreasonable, and based on extraneous considerations” that would give windfall gains to Reliance Industries Ltd.

The Congress was yet to finalise the state from where former Indian cricket skipper Mohammad Azharuddin would contest the coming Lok Sabha polls as besides West Bengal, states like Maharashtra also want him as a candidate.

Bollywood actresses Deepika Padukone will attend the audio launch of superstar Rajnikanth’s Tamil period-drama “Kochadaiiyaan” here Sunday.

Deepika essays the role of princess Vadhana in the film, which is directed by Rajnikanth’s daughter Soundarya Rajnikanth Ashwin.

“(I’m) very happy (that) Deepika Padukone, our princess Vadhana, will be in Chennai for the audio launch,” posted Soundarya on her Twitter page.

‘Frame charges in railway bribery case’ (Lead)

A court here has found prime facie evidence against all the 10 accused in the railway bribery case and ordered framing of charges against them.

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Special Judge Swarana Kanta Sharma delivered the order Thursday.

The accused in the Rs.10 crore cash-for-post bribery case include former railway minister Pawan Kumar Bansal’s nephew Vijay Singla and suspended Railway Board member Mahesh Kumar.

“Be listed for framing of charge against all the accused people on March 11,” the court said.

Train health workers to be gender sensitive: WHO

India’s health workforce must be trained to be gender sensitive, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said Friday on the eve of International Women’s Day, March 8.

“To achieve health for all people, we must promote and protect the health of women and girls throughout life, not just during the reproductive phase. A healthy, empowered girl child grows up to be a healthy woman. A healthy mother creates a healthy family and a healthy nation,” WHO regional director for South- East Asia Poonam Khetrapal Singh said in a statement.

Jagdambika Pal resigns from Lok Sabha, Congress

In a setback to the Congress, MP and former Uttar Pradesh unit chief Jagdambika Pal Friday resigned from Lok Sabha as well as from the party, saying that the the emerging leadership did not need leaders like him.

“The emerging leadership probably does not need people like me. Hence I resigned,” Pal, the MP from Domariyaganj, said here without naming party vice president Rahul Gandhi.

Pal, 63, has also been a three-time legislator and minister in the state.

Asked about his political options, Pal said he will go back to his constituency and meet the electorate to know their mind.

Lok Sabha polls clash between secular, communal forces: Omar

Jammu and Kashmir chief electoral officer (CEO) Umang Narula Friday asked political parties to abide by the model code of conduct during the five-phase Lok Sabha elections in the state.

At a meeting of political parties convened here, Narula requested their representatives to cooperate with officials and adhere to the Election Commission (EC) guidelines regarding poll expenditure, publicity, election manifesto, campaigning and the like.

Congress challenges US court jurisdiction in 1984 riots case

Challenging the extraterritorial jurisdiction of US courts, India’s Congress party has sought dismissal of a human rights violation case relating to the 1984 anti-Sikh violence filed by a US-based Sikh rights group.

“The presumption against extraterritoriality is a ferocious watchdog protecting American sovereignty,” Congress party’s attorney Ravi Batra said in a memorandum of law filed Thursday in a Manhattan court in support of its pending motion to dismiss the lawsuit filed by Sikhs for Justice (SFJ).
