Two more convicts in Delhi gang rape case move SC

The remaining two convicts in the Dec 16, 2012 Delhi gang rape case — Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur — have moved the Supreme Court, seeking stay on execution of their death sentence.

The petition in this regard was filed by Sharma and Thakur Monday. The two have followed Mukesh and Pawan Gupta who moved the apex court March 15 challenging the March 13 order of the Delhi High Court, upholding their death sentence by a fast track court.

RBI will have clearer picture post-budget: IOB CMD

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will be better placed with economic data and the thinking of the new government by the next review of its monetary policy, said M. Narendra, chairman and managing director of Indian Overseas Bank.

Reacting to the RBI’s monetary policy review Tuesday, Narenda in a statement said: “By the next bimonthly review, the RBI will be better armed with more granular data on the state of the economy as well as the thinking of the new government through its budget to formulate a policy stance in consonance with the expectations of a much anticipated economic rebound.”

Oman minister meets Sushma, discusses ties

In the government’s first engagement with the Gulf countries, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj met her Oman counterpart Yusuf Bin Alawi Bin Abdullah here Tuesday and discussed various aspects – political, economic and defence – of bilateral ties.

The meeting signalled a “desire for continued engagement at high levels between the two countries”, said an external affairs ministry statement.

The visiting Omani foreign minister congratulated Sushma Swaraj on her assumption of office and hoped to further consolidate the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.

Bollywood thespian Dilip Kumar’s biography finally has a title and it will be released by singing legend Lata Mangeshkar at a grand event here June 9.

Said author Uday Tara Nayar: “The title ‘Substance & The Shadow’ was suggested by Dilip saab. The ‘substance’ refers to the actual person behind the legend and the ‘shadow’ is the mythical image that has come to surround his persona.”

India evacuates its citizens from eastern Ukraine

The Indian mission in Ukraine has been facilitating the evacuation of nearly a thousand Indian nationals, particularly students, from the restive eastern region of Lugansk in the country, the Indian embassy in the Ukraine capital said.

A total of 27 students were received in Kiev by the Indian embassy till Tuesday afternoon, the embassy said in a statement available on its website.

“All the Indian nationals including students being evacuated from Lugansk would be lodged at Hotel Ramada Encore Kiev,” the embassy said.

Colombia’s Falcao ruled out of World Cup

Colombia’s key player Radamel Falcao has been ruled out of the World Cup after failing to recover from a serious knee injury.

At a press conference here Monday, a tearful Falcao could not hide his pain at missing the June 12-July 13 tournament, reports Xinhua.

The 28-year-old ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee while playing for Monaco Jan 28. He underwent surgery three days later and had been given until the last moment to prove his fitness by Colombia coach Jose Pekerman.

Tenzin Yangzom wins ‘Miss Tibet 2014’ crown unopposed

Tibetan contestant Tenzin Yangzom from Sikkim will be crowned Miss Tibet 2014 here June 8, an event organiser said here Tuesday. Yangzom won the pageant unopposed.

“We received eight applications for this year’s pageant. Five were confirmed, but four withdrew at the last minute citing personal reasons,” pageant director-producer Lobsang Wangyal told IANS.

“Since the Miss Tibet Pageant is to empower young Tibetan women, we see it important to respect and appreciate the commitment and enthusiasm of the lone contestant,” he added.

Sri Lanka orders release of 29 Indian fishermen

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has ordered the release of 29 Indian fishermen arrested by his country’s navy, announced Indian external affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin Tuesday.

The development came on the day Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa met Prime Minister Narendra Modi here.

The fishermen, who are from Tamil Nadu, were arrested last week allegedly for poaching in Sri Lankan waters off Thalaimannar in the north of the country and handed over to the fisheries department.

Shocked BJP workers and leaders of other parties gathered at the party’s headquarters here to pay homage to union Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde, who died in a road accident here Tuesday morning.

Munde’s body encased in a glass-top coffin was brought on an army truckto the Bharatiya Janata Party’s 11 Ashoka Road office for people to pay homage.

The transparent coffin with Munde’s body wrapped in a white sheet was carried inside the office and a BJP flag was placed on it.

Co-sponsored among others by lone Indian-American House member Ami Bera and the first Hindu-American lawmaker Tulsi Gabbard, the resolution also seeks “to further strengthen our strategic partnership with India, including in the defence, trade, and security arenas”.

Watching porn, sexting on rise among Canadian teenagers: Survey

There is a “concerning pattern” among young Canadian students in watching porn and ‘sexting’ has also become commonplace among teenagers, a survey shows.

“In our survey, 40 percent of boys admitted to looking for porn online and the ones that did typically said they were frequently searching for it,” Matthew Johnson, director of education for MediaSmarts, an Ottawa-based digital literacy outfit, was quoted as saying.

The researchers conducted a survey with 5,436 students in grades four through 11 about their lives online.

Cabinet passes resolution condoling Munde’s death

The union cabinet Tuesday met and passed a resolution condoling the death of union minister Gopinath Munde, who died in a car accident here in the morning.

Munde would be cremated in his native place in Maharastra Wednesday “with full state honours”, said union Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu.

The cabinet also resolved to observe national mourning Tuesday, he added.

India’s central bank leaves policy rates intact

India’s central bank Tuesday kept all key policy rates unchanged but eased some money for lending, indicating that it will await more positive signals from the economy and the upcoming national budget before measures to spur growth.

While the cash reserve ratio was kept unchanged at 4 percent, statutory liquidity ratio (SLR), which is the quantum of liquid assets banks have to hold against their deposits, has been reduced by 50 basis points to 22.5 percent.

This could release Rs.35,000 crore more for banks to lend. India Inc welcomed the move.

Sonia expresses ‘great pain’ over Munde’s death

Congress president Sonia Gandhi Tuesday wrote to Pradhanya Munde, wife of union minister Gopinath Munde who died in a car accident, expressing “great pain” at his demise.

“The news about the sudden demise of your husband has caused me great pain. I am aware that the pain must be unbearable for you and other family members and words of condolences are not enough. There are certain accidents in life on which we lack control and must bear with,” Gandhi said in the letter.

Male contraceptive pill will have to wait

The much speculated birth control pill for males may not see the light of day soon as researchers have found that hormonal male contraception via testosterone does not stop the production of healthy sperm.

The problem actually lies in optimal dosing of testosterone, the study showed.

The study involving mice showed that a previously developed male hormonal oral contraceptive method (via testosterone) is unable to stop the production and/or the release of sperm.
