Bring down corporate tax rate to 25 percent: ICC to centre

Emphasising on the need for regaining the growth momentum, a business chamber has urged the central government to bring down the corporate tax rate to the global average of 25 percent and remove levies like surcharge and education cess to generate more investible surplus with the corporates.

In a meeting with senior union finance ministry officials ahead of the central budget, a delegation of the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Kolkata, also strongly objected to the proposed GAAR (General Anti Avoidance Rule) rules.

Indian men’s, women’s squash teams drub Iran

The Indian squash contingents got off to a perfect start, defeating Iran 3-0 in both the men’s and women’s events in the 17th Asian Team Championship here Wednesday.

India has been given the top billing in the men’s section while it is seeded second among women.

Bengal to set up 22 new municipalities

The West Bengal government Wednesday announced it will set up 22 new municipalities as part of its policy of decentralising administration and ensuring development through local bodies.

The new municipalities are scheduled to be created at Tehatta, Chanchal, Canning, Falakata, Kakdwip, Belda, Khatra, Gaajol, Buniyadpur, Bally West, Andul, Domzur, Bagnan, Bakshirhat, Thakurnagar, Amta, Kolaghat-Mecheda, Amtala, Domkol, Tarapith and Mollarpur.

The minister said discussions were on to create the 22nd municipality in Mainaguri.

Beas tragedy: NHRC notice to Himachal government

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Wednesday issued notice to the Himachal Pradesh government over the drowning of 24 students in the Beas river.

“The National Human Rights Commission issued notices to the chief secretary, Government of Himachal Pradesh and to the deputy commissioner, Mandi, calling for a report in the matter within two weeks,” a statement said here.

A wall of water washed away 24 engineering students and a tour operator Sunday evening after water was released into the river without a warning from a nearby hydropower project.

Sand artist creates sculptures on football World Cup

Noted sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik Wednesday created sculptures, including a world cup trophy, in Odisha to mark the beginning of the football world cup in Brazil Thursday.

Besides the trophy, Pattnaik created sand sculptures of a mini stadium with a football and on the opening match between Brazil and Croatia on the beach of Puri, about 55 km from here.

Bengal supports tax waiver for blue-white Kolkata houses

The West Bengal government Wednesday backed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s proposed tax waiver for people painting their houses in Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s favourite blue and white colours.

A senior minister said the government wants to make the eastern metropolis a “Blue City”.

Describing blue as a “soothing colour”, Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said psychiatrists feel the hue is an “anti-depressant”.

“People love the blue sea. They also admire the blue sky,” Hakim told reporters on the state assembly premises here.

Cyclonic storm Nanauk to intensify

Cyclonic storm Nanauk formed Wednesday over the eastcentral Arabian Sea, said a statement from the ministry of earth sciences.

The storm was formed near latitude 16.70 N and longitude 67.00 E, about 670 km west-southwest of Mumbai, 590 km south-southwest of Veraval and 960 km east-southeast of Masirah Island (Oman), the statement said Wednesday evening.

It was the result of a depression formed over eastcentral Arabian Sea in the afternoon of Tuesday, the statement added.

Delhi power crisis: Protests continue, centre steps in

Protests over Delhi’s power outages continued Wednesday even as the centre allocated more gas to a power plant to enable it double its production. Meanwhile, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal accused the centre of shielding the discoms.

Wednesday also saw the season’s highest demand of 5,470 MW.

The 1,500 MW Bawana (Pragati-III) Power Plant started generating over 400 MW power after GAIL – on the centre’s directions – pumped more gas into it Tuesday night. Built at a cost of Rs.4,500 crore, the gas-strapped plant was generating some 218 MW.

DU receives over 1.9 lakh applications till Wednesday

Delhi University received applications from over 1.9 lakh students for its four-year undergraduate programme till Wednesday, the ninth day of admission process for 54,000 seats in 61 colleges, an official statement said.

A total of 192,433 applications (both online and offline) have been received so far, the Delhi University statement said.

Online applications were a hit, with 104,666 students purchasing and making payments on the DU portal. The university received 87,767 offline application forms from 18 centres across Delhi.

Iraqi militants seize Saddam hometown Tikrit

A day after taking control over Iraq’s second largest city of Mosul, militants seized Tikrit, the hometown of former leader Saddam Hussein, late Wednesday, a media report said.

Militants associated to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) seized the capital of Salaheddine province, 150km north of Iraq’s capital Baghdad, BBC reported Wednesday

On Tuesday, Mosul, the capital of Nineveh province in northern Iraq, came under control of militant groups, including ISIL, after several bloody clashes that erupted with Iraqi security forces last week.

‘Facebook most preferred social networking medium for urban teens’

Despite a drop in the percentage, Facebook continues to be the preferred social networking playground for teenagers in India’s metros and other big cities, according to a survey.

Seventy-six percent of teenagers spread across 14 Indian cities had a Facebook account in 2014, though the figure was 86 percent in 2012, said the survey conducted by Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).

Wrestler who trained Delhi policemen dies

Harfool Singh, a wrestler who represented India at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and trained many Delhi Police personnel, has died here after a prolonged illness.

Harfool Singh, who developed paralysis following a brain hemorrhage some years ago, died at his akhada (wrestling ring) Monday, a member of the akhada told IANS. Harfool Singh was born in Haryana’s Bashipur village in 1939.

A police officer said he trained many Delhi Police personnel who won national and international awards.

1997 Connaught Place killing: HC notice to CBI

The Delhi High Court Wednesday issued notice to the CBI and asked it to file a status report on the parole plea of suspended police officer S.S. Rathi, serving a life term along with nine other policemen for killing two businessmen after mistaking them to be gangsters.

The case is about the broad daylight killing of two businessmen who were mistaken for gangsters and shot dead in Connaught Place in Delhi 17 years ago.

Bad governance worse than diabetes: Modi

Stating that bad governance is worse than diabetes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday said India needs a fresh international image.

“India’s image today is tainted by scams. We need to come together and correct the image,” Modi said, replying to the debate in the Rajya Sabha on motion of thanks on the president’s speech to the joint session of parliament.

Delhi MP’s car collides with Uma Bharti’s escort vehicle

Three people, including two policemen, were injured after Delhi MP Parvesh Verma’s car collided head-on with union minister Uma Bharti’s escort vehicle here Wednesday, police said.

Both the minister and the MP were not travelling when the incident occurred in Vijay Chowk, the square in front of Rashtrapati Bhavan in central Delhi.

Police said Verma’s car was on the wrong side.

“Verma’s car driver along with head constable Suresh Kumar and constable Trilok Chandra of Bharti’s escort vehicle received minor injuries,” said a police officer.

AICC secretary and former Mumbai MP Sanjay Nirupam Wednesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fulfil his pre-poll promise of action against BJP MPs with criminal records.

“Modi said in a TV interview that criminalisation of politics was a big problem in India. He had even given a solution he would hand over all the affidavits with criminal records of the MPs to the Supreme Court and ask them to develop a mechanism to fast-track these cases,” Nirupam said, quoting his letter to the PM on the issue.

Pistol shooter Rai wins World Cup silver

India’s pistol shooter Jitu Rai won the silver medal in the men’s 10-metre air pistol event at the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Wednesday.

Rai, 27, shot 199.4 in the finals, after aggregating 583 in the qualification stage. His compatriot Prakash Nanjappa, finished seventh after scoring 97.1 in the finals and 584 in the qualification, according to information received here.

The gold was clinched by Spain’s Pablo Carrera with a score of 201.3 in the finals while Pavlo Korostylov of Ukraine bagged the bronze with 178.4 in the finals.

Modi seeks opposition’s support in parliament

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Wednesday sought the opposition Congress’ support in parliament, saying that despite the government’s numbers there was nothing wrong in seeking support from the opposition.

“We have got the people’s support, but if we do not get your support it will be a waste. We want to take you along, and if needed, we would also seek your guidance,” Modi said in the Rajya Sabha, where former prime minister Manmohan Singh sat in the opposition benches.

Modi for use of hi-tech in farming to curb price rise

Use of modern technology in farming and proper management with the help of real-time data will help curb food inflation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Wednesday.

In his reply in the Lok Sabha to the debate on motion of thanks on the president’s address, Modi said there is adequate availability of food products in the country.

“There is enough food in the country. What is required is proper management,” Modi said in his maiden speech in the parliament.
