France’s national football coach Didier Deschamps has warned his players of Honduras’ aggressive style of playing ahead of the FIFA World Cup Group E clash at the Estádio Beira-Rio here Sunday.

Deschamps also praised the Honduras players saying they possess good individual skills. Honduras are ranked 31st in the world, reports EFE.

Australia defend hockey World Cup title

Australia successfully defended their hockey World Cup title, which they had won four years ago in New Delhi, drubbing the Netherlands 6-1 in the final at the Kyocera Stadium here Sunday.

While Australia and Netherlands took gold and silver, Argentina clinched their maiden medal at the event by winning the bronze after beating England 2-0 in the 3rd-4th position playoff.

Cambodians flee as Thai junta targets illegal workers

An estimated 135,000 Cambodian migrant workers have deported or fled from Thailand since early this month after the new military government rounded up illegal migrant labourers, an official said Sunday.

“As of Sunday night, Thai authorities have sent about 135,000 Cambodian workers back to Cambodia,” Kousoum Saroeuth, governor of Banteay Meanchey province told Xinhua.

The Cambodia-Thailand International Border Checkpoint is located in Banteay Meanchey.

He said some 25,000 workers were sent back to Cambodia Sunday.

‘Spain’s qualification tough but not impossible’

Colombian striker Carlos Bacca believes that Spain’s aim to win against Chile is hard but not impossible after they were humiliated with a 1-5 defeat at the hands of the Netherlands in a World Cup Group B game Friday.

The 27-year-old Seville forward said that Spain have an uneasy mission of winning the last two matches of the group against Chile and Australia but added that it won’t be impossible as they are the defending World Champions, reports EFE.

Bacca said that Netherlands are a great team and hence they were able to achieve that kind of a victory.

Ramires not for sale: Mourinho

Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho Sunday said his side’s Brazilian midfielder Ramires is not for sale while referring to Real Madrid’s bid to transfer him.

“Ramires is staying at Chelsea. He’s not for sale. I have an excellent friendship with important people within Real Madrid and they know that Ramires is going to stay at Chelsea,” said Mourinho, reports EFE.

Mourinho also went on to say that he is not interested in signing any of Real Madrid players.

“They also know that I am not interested in any of Real Madrid players. That is the end of the matter,” he concluded.

It was a hugely disappointing defeat: Gerrard

England captain Steven Gerrard lamented his side’s 1-2 loss to Italy in a Group D match of the World Cup, saying that it was hugely disappointing.

“We knew how Italy were going to play. They never surprised us really but it’s disappointing because we put so much into it and we’ve come away with nothing,” the 34-year-old midfielder said Saturday, reports EFE.

Reports claim Real Madrid to replace Casillas

Keeping in mind Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas’ recent ‘poor performance’, the Spanish club is seeking to transfer Benfica’s Slovakian Jan Oblak.

The contract of the 21-year-old keeper includes a penalty clause worth 20 million euros, according to a report in Portuguese daily Abola. Oblak, who joined the Portuguese club in 2013, has played 27 matches for the club’s first team, reports EFE.

Delhi jeweller shot at during robbery bid

A 49-year-old jeweller was shot at by two bike-borne assailants here Sunday when he resisted their attempt to snatch his bag containing jewellery and cash, police said.

The incident took place at around 3 p.m. in central Delhi’s Karol Bagh area. A bullet pierced the left side of Sanjay Garg’s chest, police said.

“The robbers tried to snatch Garg’s bag. When he resisted, they fired at him. The robbers failed to snatch the bag, containing some jewellery and cash, and fled from the spot,” said a police official.

India beat Malaysia, win 5th consecutive match

The Indian women’s hockey team registered their fifth successive win over Malaysia by defeating them 2-0 here Sunday.

Filled with confidence and showing excellent skills, India’s Ritushah Arya opened the account in the 12th minute to take the lead. Just before halftime, Vandana Kataria pierced in another goal to extend the lead.

However, both teams saw a dry run in the second half and failed to score.

Mahindra finish 12th, 18th in Catalan GP

Mahindra Racing rider Miguel Oliveira added to his points score at the Moto3 Catalan Grand Prix with a fighting 12th place finish while teammate Arthur Sissis ended 18th, just three places away from points.

Telugu actress-producer Lakshmi Manchu has welcomed a baby girl through surrogacy. “It’s one of the best moments of my life,” tweeted her father and actor Manchu Mohan Babu.

Lakshmi, her husband Andy Srinivasan and the entire Manchu family are extremely delighted with the news.

Gen. V.K. Singh announces 24X7 grievance helpline for Ghaziabad

Union Minister of State Gen. (Retd) V.K. Singh plans setting up a 24X7 public grievance helpline in his parliamentary constituency – Ghaziabad, the minister announced Sunday.

“The problems would be referred to a committee that would include members from political, social and professional background, to forward the grievances with its recommendations,” he said in a press conference here.

The minister said he would form seven to eight such committees.

From waste to energy: NDMC doing its bit towards easing power woes

The New Delhi Municipal Council is daily generating 16 MW of electricity from solid waste and supplying it to 8,000 households in the city as part of its effort to ease the acute power crisis the national capital is grappling with.

The civic body is generating power using solid waste as fuel at a ‘Waste To Energy’ plant on NDMC land in Okhla.

This plant generates 16 MW of electricity per day which is being used by 8,000 households, NDMC chairperson Jalaj Shrivastava said Sunday.

BJP to apprise PM about ‘lawlessness’ in Bengal, angry Mamata hits back

Expressing concern over political violence in West Bengal, the BJP Sunday attacked the Trinamool Congress government over the issue and said it will apprise Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the “lawlessness” in the state.

Two held with 1.4 kg gold at Bagdogra airport

Two people were held Sunday and 1.4 kg gold worth over Rs.40 lakh seized from them at Bagdogra airport in West Bengal’s Darjeeling district, customs officials said.

Indian nationals Mohammad Khurshid and Ahmed Zahir were detained by custom officials after they alighted from a Bangkok-bound Druk Air flight.

“Upon search, gold biscuits weighing 1.4 kilo were seized from them,” a custom official said.

Indian construction worker falls to death in UAE

An Indian expatriate died after he fell from an under-construction building in the UAE, media reported Sunday.

The unnamed Indian construction worker, 30, fell from a highrise, while carrying construction material in Al Majaz area in Sharjah Friday, Khaleej Times reported.

He was rushed to Al Kuwaiti Hospital in Sharjah, where he was pronounced dead.

Police were inspecting whether the prescribed safety measures were followed by the company.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel offered her best wishes to the national football team led by coach Joachim Loew ahead of their FIFA World Cup opener against Portugal Monday.

Palestine flays Israeli arrests over missing teenagers

Palestine termed the arrests of 80 Palestinians from the West Bank Sunday by Israel over the kidnapping of the three teenagers, who have been missing since Thursday evening, as a violation of international laws.

According to the officials, the 80 Palestinians, included top Hamas and Legislative Council members, were arrested in and around Hebron and across the West Bank in a joint military, police and Shin Bet operation, Xinhua reported.

“The arrest campaign is unjustified and an act of collective punishment,” the Palestinian official said.

Four insurgents, two police men killed Afghanistan

At least four insurgents and two policemen were killed in an exchange of fire in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province Sunday, police said.

Rahmatullah Atrafi, the deputy provincial police chief, said four insurgents and two policemen were killed in the exchange of fire. No civilians were injured in the incident.

The militants tried to disrupt the presidential election process, he said.

Robots boost security at FIFA World Cup

American robot manufacturing company iRobot Corporation has signed an agreement with the Brazilian government to provide 30 robots, worth 5.3 million euros, which will take part in the FIFA World Cup security plan.

Deputy head of the security and defence department of the company Tim Treiner said these robots have many security characteristics. They can take dangerous tasks such as defusing bombs or scanning areas suspected of hosting explosives, reports EFE.
