Bappi Lahiri files nomination as BJP candidate

Famed music composer Bappi Lahiri, contesting the Lok Sabha polls on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket, Monday filed his nominations from the Sreerampur parliamentary constituency in West Bengal.

Accompanied by his son, daughter and son-in-law, Lahiri filed his papers for the seat which comprises parts of Hooghly and Howrah districts.

The effervescent 61-year-old music composer has promised to bring in Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and melody queens Lata Mangeshkar or Asha Bhosle to boost his campaign.

Turnout in Assam could cross 75 percent: EC

Polling percentage in five parliamentary constituencies of Assam was expected to cross 75 percent while an 84 percent turnout had been seen in one constituency of Tripura, the Election Commission said Monday.

“Till 5 p.m., voter turnout in Assam was 72.5 percent and the people were still in queue to vote. The balloting might cross 75 percent. Tripura recorded 84 percent by that time,” said an election commission official.

In 2009, these Assam seats had recorded a total of 69.60 percent voting, while the Tripura constituency had recorded 86 percent.

8 Jharkhand kids fall ill after eating outdated biscuits

Eight children fell ill after eating outdated biscuits in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad district Monday, police said.

According to police, the children living in slum areas of Jharia locality in the district, about 240 km from here, ate the biscuits after picking up the packets from a pond situated close by.

They were then admitted to a hospital after they took ill. The condition of four of them was stated to be serious.

Police are trying to ascertain how the outdated biscuits packed in a polythene bag reached the pond.

Amit Shah gets notice for poll code breach

The Election Commission Monday issued notice to BJP leader Amit Shah for violating the model code of conduct through his speeches made while campaigning in Uttar Pradesh.

The commission asked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, considered close to party prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, to explain within three days as to why action should not be initiated against him for violating the model code while campaigning in Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli, Bijnor and Muzaffarnagar districts.

Sharp increase in number of registered political parties

A whopping 1,616 registered political parties are in the fray in the 2014 general elections, an increase of 556 since the last 2009 polls, according to the Election Commission.

The number of registered parties in 2009 general elections was 1,060.

Candidates of parties which register themselves with the Election Commission get preference in the matter of allotment of free symbols as compared to those who seek to contest the polls as independent candidates.

Dhoni named captain of ICC World T20 team of the tournament

The International Cricket Council (ICC) Monday announced the men’s team of the tournament of the ICC World Twenty20 with India’s Mahendra Singh Dhoni being named the captain.

The team includes four players from India, two from both South Africa and West Indies, and one representative each from Australia, the Netherlands and Sri Lanka.

Chosen by a select group of experts, the team was aimed at being suited for Bangladesh conditions, on the basis of performances in the tournament only. Statistics were used but were not the sole basis for selections.

Nido Tania killing: Four accused’s judicial custody extended

A court here Monday extended, for 14 days, the judicial custody of the four people allegedly involved in Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Tania killing case.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Pritam Singh extended the custody of accused Pawan, Sunder, Sunny Uppal and Farman till April 21 after the four were produced before it.

The four were arrested February and booked under the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act for passing racist remarks against Tania.

Modi’s 3D rallies cancelled due to technical reasons

BJP leader Narendra Modi’s 3D rallies in 100 cities, including nine locations in Delhi Monday evening have been cancelled due to “technical issues”.

“Today’s (Monday) event has been cancelled due to technical issues,” a Bharatiya Janata Party official said.

Modi’s 10-feet-tall virtual image was to address over a 1,000 rallies in 100 cities including Delhi between 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Australian designer creates sari for Vidya Balan

Actress Vidya Balan has become Bollywood’s quintessential ambassador of the sari, and when an Australian designer was asked to create an ensemble for her, she couldn’t think beyond the six-yard wonder either.

As part of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2014, festival ambassador Vidya did a photoshoot with celebrated Australian designer Susan Dimasi.

Dimasi presented Vidya in a special sari, the fabric of which was specially designed by her. The sari was the result of handweaving a textile with silk ribbon through a rubber net.

Top players for Petroleum tennis tournament

Rohan Bopanna and Saketh Myneni, fresh from their Davis Cup triumph over Korea this weekend, will head a strong field in the 33rd PSPB inter-unit tennis tournament commencing here Tuesday.

The five-day tournament will also witness top women’s players like Rushmi Chakraborty, Ankita Raina, Prerna Bhambri and Snehadevi S Reddy besides talented young stars such as Ramkumar Ramanathan.

Eight millionaires in Meghalaya electoral battle (Curtain Raiser)

Eight of the 10 candidates in the fray in Meghalaya’s two parliamentary constituencies that go to polls Wednesday are millionaires.

The ruling Congress in the state is pitted against fractured regional parties for the two Lok Sabha seats in this mountainous northeastern state, where elecrtions are to be held April 9.

Meghalaya has two parliamentary constituencies – Shillong and Tura. Eight of the 10 candidates for these are crorepatis.

Votes can be cast from 7 a.m to 5 p.m. April 9.

Nandita Das, Parmesh Shahani among 2014 Yale World Fellows

Award-winning Indian actress and director Nandita Das and head of Godrej India Culture Lab Parmesh Shahani have been named 2014 Yale World Fellows, taking the number of Indian fellows to 15.

With the addition of Das and Shahani, India has more fellows in the global Yale World Fellows network than any other country since the programme was established in 2002 by the New Haven, Connecticut-based Ivy League university.

30 militants killed in Pakistan

At least 30 militants were killed by the Frontier Corps (FC) in Pakistan’s Balochistan province Monday, an official said.

Khan Wasey, the spokesperson for FC, a para-military force, told Dawn online that the forces launched an operation against suspected militants in Kalat district’s Parodh area.

“So far more than 30 miscreants have been killed in the operation,” Wasey said adding that “forces also destroyed six vehicles of miscreants”.

Ten security personnel were injured during the operation, he added.

Ballot count in Afghan presidential poll starts

The counting of ballots cast in the Afghan presidential election started Monday with the partial results expected to come out Tuesday, an election official said.

“The polling ended 5 p.m. local time Saturday. The initial counting process took place following the balloting at the polling centres. Today, election materials arrived from the 30 provinces out of 34 to the Independent Election Commission (IEC) headquarters. The tallying of the ballot papers started in National Tally Centre,” IEC spokesman Noor Mohammad Noor said.

Sensex in red; consumer durables stocks down

A benchmark index of Indian equities markets closed in the red for the third consecutive session Monday as consumer durables, bank and healthcare stocks declined on profit booking.

Markets were cautious as the five-week polling exercise began in the day for the general election.

The 30-scrip S&P Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 22,355.56 points, closed at 22,343.45 points — down 16.05 points or 0.07 percent from its previous day’s close at 22,359.50 points.

It touched a high of 22,481.62 points and a low of 22,197.51 intra-day.

TTP website shut down 24 hours after launch

Less than 24 hours after the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) launched its official website, UmarMedia.com, it was shut down Monday.

According to the information and publication wing of the TTP, the website was sponsored by Umar Media, the ‘media wing’ of the militant group, but investigation into the domain’s registered records Monday revealed that the website was hosted by a company from Punjab, Dawn online reported.

Three Indians accused of pushing woman into prostitution

Three expatriate Indians have been accused of forcing a woman into the flesh trade on the pretext of giving her a job as a maid in the United Arab Emirates’ (UAE) capital Abu Dhabi, media reported Monday.

A criminal court in Abu Dhabi heard the case Sunday of the three Indian men accused of picking up the Indian woman from Abu Dhabi International Airport and luring her into prostitution, The National reported Monday.

Over 83 percent voters cast vote in Tripura

Over 83 percent of the 1.2 million electorate Monday cast their ballot as polling was held in one of the two Lok Sabha constituencies in the Left-ruled Tripura, an official said.

No untoward incident was reported as balloting took place in West Tripura constituency, police and election officials said. “Polling was absolutely peaceful,” an officer added.

Nine Bengal officials removed from poll-related posts

The Election Commission Monday removed nine West Bengal officials including five distict police chiefs and one district magistrate from their posts and ordered they be kept away from Lok Sabha polls-related duty, said an official.

The order, which came a day after the full bench of the poll panel held wide consultations with state officials and political parties, was sent to the state Chief Secretary Sanjay Mitra during the day.

Two UN aid workers shot dead in Somalia

Two foreign UN workers were shot dead in Somalia Monday by a gunman wearing a police uniform, police and witnesses said.

The two foreigners, whose nationalities were not yet known, worked with the UN Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC) and were at the airport in the Somalian town of Galkayo when the man in police uniform shot them, police officer Mohamed Ali told Xinhua.

“The gunman is now in detention and is being investigated. One of the white men died on the spot while the other was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead,” Ali said.

We will provide water to all households: BJP

The BJP Monday said it would give high priority to water security and provide piped water to all households.

The party’s manifesto for the Lok Sabha election released Monday had a sub-head on water which talked about the increasing gap between demand and supply of water in the country.

It said the party would launch the “Pradhan Mantri Gram Sinchayee Yojana” with the motto of “har khet ko paani (water for every field)”.

Indian-origin man’s extradition: Victim’s family hopeful

The extradition of Indian-origin man Shrien Dewani to South Africa after a long legal battle has brought the prospect of justice for his dead wife a step closer, her family has said.

Shrien Dewani, 33, is being extradited to South Africa after he lost his last legal battle to block the move over the charges of killing his Swedish wife of Indian-origin Anni, 28, in November 2010 in Cape Town.

Anish Hindocha, Anni’s brother, said there were still questions to be answered over the death of his sister in South Africa, the Guardian reported Monday.

Ukrainian PM accuses Russia of fomenting separatist sentiment

Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk Monday accused Russia of stirring up a fresh wave of unrest by fomenting separatist sentiment in eastern Ukraine.

“There is a scenario written by the Russian Federation, which is aimed at dismemberment and destruction of Ukraine,” Yatsenyuk told an urgent cabinet meeting.

Pro-Russia activists seized several government buildings in eastern Ukraine Sunday, demanding closer ties with Moscow and a referendum to give more powers to local authorities, Xinhua reported.
