Cyclone Hudhud: Harsh Vardhan says Govt. ready to handle any situation

Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan on Sunday assured that the government is ready to handle any kind of situation, even as Cyclone Hudhud lashed the shores of Andhra Pradesh.
“A National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) is already ready and we are ready to handle any kind of situation,” said Harsh Vardhan.

Director-General of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), LS Rathore, earlier said that even as Cyclone Hudhud crosses over Vishakhapatnam, the region will experience very heavy rain, thereby causing damage in the city.

Jharkhand to experience heavy rains and strong winds due to Hudhud

Indian Metrological Department (IMD) Ranchi Director Bk Mandal on Sunday said that Jharkhand is expected to experience mild to heavy rains as Cyclone Hudhud passes over Vishakhapatnam, with conditions likely to recede to normal by Tuesday.

“Our forecast is that the storm will move in the northwest direction and will affect Jharkhand. As of now, there is light rainfall in Jharkhand, which will intensify tomorrow. There will be heavy rains and strong winds in some parts of the state,” Mandal told ANI.

Andhra Pradesh is using latest technology tools to gather firsthand information about the destruction caused by cyclone Hudhud.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has appealed to people to upload pictures and videos of uprooted trees, breached roads, damaged crops and inundated areas.

He said the government has asked the National Remote Sensing Agency (NRSA) to do the mapping.

Cyclone Hudhud: IMD forecasts more damage in Vishakhapatnam

The Director General of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), L.S. Rathore, on Sunday said that even as Cyclone Hudhud crosses over Vishakhapatnam it will experience very heavy rain thereby causing damage in the city.
“All preparations have been made in the districts to counter the effects of the cyclone and the heavy rainfall that will follow the cyclone. As per the latest information received, 67,752 people have been evacuated in Gajapati Ganjam, Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri, Puri, Kendrapara and Khurda districts to 604 safe shelters,” Patnaik told a press conference here.

Cyclone Hudhud: Five killed in AP, Odisha, normal life hit

Severe cyclonic storm Hudhud hit the port city of Vishakapatnam today bringing with it torrential rains in three coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh and leaving five persons dead in the state and neighbouring Odisha besides snapping power and communication lines.

Normal life was thrown completely out of gear as winds with a speed of 170 to 180 kmph battered Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam and Vizianagaram districts.

Naidu to leave for coastal Andhra

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister will leave for coastal Andhra Sunday evening to assess the destruction caused by cyclone Hudhud which crossed the coast near Visakhapatnam.

Naidu told reporters here that he will reach Visakhapatnam or Rajahmundry depending on the weather conditions.

He plans to camp there for two to three days to monitor rescue and relief work.

Naidu has been monitoring the situation since morning with top officials at the secretariat. He spoke to some of his cabinet colleagues in Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Vijayanagaram and East Godavari districts.

After lull, storm in Andhra to resume at 3 pm

After the lull in the storm, Cyclone Hudhud is expected to regain its intensity in Andhra Pradesh at around 3 pm on Sunday.

“The first landfall to hit the coast was at 10.20 am, and thereafter there has been a lull. But we expect the storm to resume around 3 pm. After that our operations will begin,” National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) Director General O.P. Singh told ANI.

“In certain areas of Odisha also there is high probability of heavy rainfall due to which flooding can take place,” he added.

Authorities begin evacuation in Odisha as Cyclone Hudhud gains speed

The authorities in Odisha have started evacuating people to safer places as Cyclone Hudhud, which is expected to have a landfall on Saturday night or early Sunday morning, has started gaining speed.

According to reports, around four lakh people are being evacuated due to the threat of cyclone.

“There is huge rainfall and the media is saying that the winds will start from tomorrow. Last year we faced Cyclone Phailin and we are terrorized now,” said a local resident.

Three militants surrender in Tripura

Three tribal militants, who had fled from their hideout in southeastern Bangladesh along with their families, surrendered to security forces in Tripura, police said here Thursday.

Indian Navy fully ready to tackle Cyclone Hudhud

Rescue teams of the Indian Navy have been prepared for immediate deployment in anticipation of Cyclone Hudhud, which is expected to have a landfall on Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

“Considerable effort has been made to mobilize all the resources. The navy is fully ready. In addition, there is an NDRF team which has come. There is an army team of 200 personnel from Hyderabad, which are all being coordinated with the district administration. Cyclone threat: Tens of thousands evacuated along AP coast

Tens of thousands of people from low-lying areas of coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh have been evacuated as the state intensified preparations to face Cyclone Hudhud, expected to reach the northern coastline around Visakhapatnam by forenoon tomorrow.

As many as 24,000 people were shifted from Visakhapatnam district, 15,000 from Vizianagaram and 46,000 from Srikakulam and 160 from East Godavari district so far, special commissioner, state disaster management authority, K Hymavathi said.

She said that 146 cyclone relief shelters have been opened in the coastal districts.

Finmeccanica hopeful of reopening dialogue with Defence Ministry

With an Italian court acquitting its two former bosses of corruption charges, defence firm Finmeccanica on Friday said they can reopen dialogue with the Indian Defence Ministry, which had scrapped its Rs 3,600 crore contract for supplying 12 VVIP helicopters.

“The verdict (of Italian court) allows us to reopen dialogue with Indian Defence Ministry which was interrupted due to investigations into supply of choppers to India,” Finmeccannica CEO Mauro Moretti said in a statement.
