Mumbai, June 11: It was 9.50 pm on November 26 last year, at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST). Passengers waiting for trains on the mainline platforms heard a loud explosion. Two terrorists — one taller than the other — allegedly sprayed bullets at the waiting passengers, killing many. Three witnesses, who were lucky to survive the attack, gave their accounts of the horrifying incident at the court on Wednesday.

‘Chilli powder’ gang loots Rs 16 lakh

Hyderabad, June 11: Unidentified miscreants abducted and robbed the salesman of a private company of Rs 16 lakh at Saidabad in broad daylight while an elderly couple were relieved of cash and gold by four unidentified persons at gunpoint at Hayathnagar on Wednesday.

In the filmi style robbery at Saidabad, the salesman of Kothapetbased Sri Jyothi Marketing, a dealer of Hindustan Lever Limited, M Ramchander, and the office assistant, D Satyanarayana, were robbed of Rs 16 lakh at knife-point.

Chiranjeevi makes a mark in the House

Hyderabad, June 11: “I am well prepared to face ragging in the House,’’ Praja Rajyam Party floor leader Chiranjeevi said while making his maiden speech in the Assembly during the Motion of Thanks to Governor’s address today.

When Chiranjeevi claimed that his party gave tickets to 100 Assembly seats to backward classes, some Congress members shouted: “You sold the tickets.’’ Responding to this, Chiranjeevi said: “Like in the college where freshers are teased by seniors, I am also prepared to face such things here,’’ Chiranjeevi said.

Nine ministers given additional charge

Hyderabad, June 11: Nine ministers in the State Cabinet have been given additional charges here today. Major Industries Minister K Lakshminarayana has been allocated additional portfolios of Commerce, Export Promotion, and Food Processing. Higher Education Minister D Sridhar Babu will also look after NRI Affairs. As per the orders issued here today, Secondary Education Minister D Manikya Vara Prasada Rao will hold the additional charge of Intermediate Education, Government Examinations, AP Residential Educational Institutions Society, and Hyderabad Public School.

Parents attack school over fee hike

Hyderabad, June 11: The sudden and irrational fee hike by a school management led to an attack by irate parents, which damaged the furniture and window panes.

The attack took place on the Madina Quranic Mission School at Asifnagar on Wednesday morning. Humayunnagar police said the parents of some of the students gathered near the school and protested the irrational hike in fees which they could not afford.

MPs condemn attacks on Indian students abroad

Hyderabad, June 11: Congress MP from Nizamabad Madhu Yaskhi Goud has said that all the Parliamentarians from Andhra Pradesh have strongly aired their concern at the increasing attacks on Indian students including the Telugus studying abroad.

Mr. Goud said that the very fact that the Indian Government summoned the Australian High Commissioner and admonished him for the continuing racial attacks on Indian students showed the concern of the Parliament.

Hyderabad, June 11: Telangana Rashtra Samiti president K. Chandrasekhar Rao said that the ‘true colours of Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy’ were exposed by his ‘anti-Telangana’ remarks in the Assembly on Wednesday.

Speaking to reporters after reviewing the party’s performance in the elections at the party office here, Mr. Rao came down heavily on Dr. Reddy for hurting the sentiments of the Telangana people. Dr. Reddy spoke in a manner demeaning his stature and the people would teach him a fitting lesson.

Racial assaults on six Indians in Canada

Toronto, June 11: Close on the heels of Indians being attacked in Australia, six members of the community were racially assaulted by a group of young Canadians while playing tennis on the outskirts of Vancouver.

Police have arrested four Canadians, including a woman, in connection with the assault for shouting racial slurs at and robbing a group of tennis players in Aldergrove on Friday last.

The four — all in their teens — have been charged with robbery, assault with a weapon and uttering threats.

YSR wants private schools’ fee structure monitored

Hyderabad, June 10: The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to separate primary and secondary education, post two separate Secretaries and create two Directorates.

The primary education will cover classes I to V besides pre-primary and Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) while secondary education will include class VI to X and be till XII (higher secondary).

Death toll in Pakistan hotel blast rises to 16

Islamabad, June 10: The death toll from a suicide car bombing at a luxury hotel in Pakistan’s northwestern city of Peshawar rose Wednesday to 16, which included two foreign UN officials and a Spanish national, while up to 60 people were injured, a police official said.

Three suicide attackers in a pickup truck entered the Pearl Continental Hotel late Tuesday after shooting the security guards and rammed the explosives-laden vehicle into its main building.

32 killed in Iraq car bomb blast

Baghdad, June 10: At least 32 people were killed and 47 injured when a car bomb exploded at a market in the southern Iraqi city of Nasriya Wednesday, a security official said.

The explosion took place in al-Bathaa market in the north of the city during a busy morning.

The injured were transferred to a nearby hospital. Many of the city’s residents remained indoors following the attack.

Nasriya, the capital of the relatively peaceful province of Dhi Kar, is situated some 375 km south of Baghdad.

TDP MLA faults Naidu

Hyderabad, June 10: The Legislative Assembly on Tuesday was agog with rumours that TDP MLA from Kovur in Nellore district, N Prasanna Kumar Reddy, was
contemplating to quit Telugu Desam and join Congress.

The rumour spread like wild fire as Prasanna Kumar distributed a letter which he said he had written to party president N Chandrababu Naidu. In the letter, Reddy has advised Naidu to be wary of `chamchas’ and `buffoons’ who had “surrounded him and giving wrong advice leading to hasty decisions on important issues.”

Protests continue in Shopian

Srinagar, June 10: Normal life remained paralysed in Shopian district of south Kashmir for the 11th day today in protest against the alleged rape and murder of two women of the town, but there were no incidents of violence reported.

All shops and business establishments, banks, government offices, educational institutions remained closed and all modes of transport remained off the road in Shopian, 52 kms from here, official sources said here.

Patients’ deaths lead to protests at Gandhi, NIMS

Hyderabad, June 10: Alleged negligence of doctors at two city hospitals led to the death of two patients sparking protests by the family members. In the first incident, an auto driver from Neredmet, who got admitted to the Gandhi General Hospital died of alleged negligence of the doctors. The auto driver, Krishna Murthy (35), fell off a bed in an inebriated condition late on Tuesday night. Krishna Murthy was shifted to the Gandhi Hospital where the doctors asked his wife, Susheela, to pay Rs 500 for a CT scan.

GHMC will complete regularisation in a month

Hyderabad, June 10: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) will start the building regularisation process in a few days after going through the High Court judgement copy.

“We will announce the dates relating to the applications to be cleared per day through BRS Mela under categories like flats, individual houses, commercial buildings and others,” GHMC Commissioner S P Singh said.

Hyderabad, June 10: Syed Reyhan, the medical student who contracted Swine Flu on a trip to Canada, has stated that Swine Flu is not dangerous and is completely curable. “I want to clear this misconception about Swine Flu as something terrible to contract,” he said. He was discharged from the Government Chest Hospital on Tuesday morning after being in isolation for a week. He later talked to the media at an interactive session.

Delhi: Nursing student commits suicide

New Delhi, June 10: A 22-year-old nursing student at a government medical college in the capital allegedly committed suicide in her hostel room on Wednesday.

Kaushika, who was studying at Lady Hardinge Medical College, was found hanging in her room, a police officer said.

“We received a call from the hospital that one of the rooms in the hostel is closed from inside. We broke open the door and found the girl hanging,” the officer said.

The reasons for the extreme step were not immediately known. Police have informed her parents in Panipat, Haryana.

RJD leader shot dead, mob violence in Patna

Patna, June 10: Senior RJD leader Pervez Alam was killed and his two brothers were critically wounded on Wednesday by unidentified men who fired at them near Digha area here, triggering protests by angry locals, police said.

The assailants fired at Alam, a contractor, and his two brothers at Banskothi locality this morning. Though the RJD leader was rushed to the Patna Medical College and Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries there.

New Delhi, June 10: A complimentary pass for life to travel in a first class air-conditioned coach for self and three companions. This was, perhaps, the last largesse doled out to Lalu Prasad during his final days as railways minister.

The largesse also extends to former ministers of state for railways – nut in their case, a sole companion and one attendant can be issued free tickets in the same categories of coaches as for their senior former colleague.

Man held for allegedly raping teenage daughter

New Delhi, June 10: A man was arrested here after his 16-year-old daughter alleged that he had been raping her for two and half years at their northwest Delhi home, police said Wednesday.

The police said the victim’s mother took her to the Sultanpuri police station Wednesday afternoon and reported the matter.

After initial investigation, the police registered a case and took the victim to the Sanjay Gandhi hospital where doctors confirmed she had been raped. The man, a former soldier, was then arrested.

Ten-year girl identifies Kasab

Mumbai, June 10:A ten-year-old girl, rendered disabled during 26/11 terror strikes, today identified in court arrested gunman Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab as one of the two gunmen who had fired indiscriminately at passengers inside the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus.

Devika Rotawan, the youngest eyewitness to depose in the terror strikes trial, was asked by the court if she could identify the gunman among the three accused present in the dock.

All three accused, including Kasab stood in the dock, and the ten-year-old pointed at the Pakistani gunman. He, however, did not react.

BSE Sensex rises 2.25 pct to best close in 10 mths

Mumbai, June 10: The BSE Sensex rose 2.25 percent on Wednesday to its best close in 10 months, as markets across Asia and Europe were boosted by cash-flush investors buoyed by signs of revival in global economic growth.

Energy giant Reliance Industries and state-run explorer Oil and Natural Gas Corp were among the leading gainers as oil topped $71 a barrel, a day after settling above $70 for the first time in seven months.
