Charged with rape, Shiney remanded to 3-day police custody

Mumbai, June 15:: Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja, who was arrested in Mumbai for alleged raping his domestic help, has been remanded to three-day police custody on Monday, says his defence lawyer, Srikant Shivde.

The actor was produced in Andheri court. He has been booked for rape under Section 376 and also charged under Section 339 for wrongful restraint and Section 506 for threatening another person.

On Sunday night Ahuja’s domestic help launched a complaint alleging she was raped by the actor.

CBI books insurance official for fraud

New Delhi, June 15: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has charged a divisional manager of the United India Insurance Company with fraud, the agency said Monday.

The charge against Babu Lal Kohli, who currently heads the company’s divisional office at Sikar in Rajasthan, was that while working in a similar capacity in Delhi, he had collected premiums from several people and had issued them cover notes but had neither deposited their copies nor the money with the company, a CBI statement said.

Lucknow, June 15: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday held a meeting to review its poor Lok Sabha poll performance in Uttar Pradesh but top leaders like party president Rajnath Singh, Murli Manohar Joshi, Maneka Gandhi, her son Varun were conspicuous by their absence.

Nearly 50 party members attended the meeting chaired by state BJP president Ramapati Ram Tripathi and senior leader Kalraj Mishra.

Dissidence gathers momentum in TRS

Hyderabad, June 15: Dissidence in the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) gathered momentum Monday with a group of rebels making a vain attempt to seize Telangana Bhavan, the party headquarters, while party chief K. Chandrasekhara Rao made a sensational allegation that the ruling Congress party had hatched a conspiracy to kill him.

A group of dissidents, led by former MP Ravindra Naik, tried to enter party headquarters but were prevented by the loyalists of Chandrasekhara Rao. The dissidents claimed that Naik was attacked by supporters of the party president.

Terrorists may have reached target cities: Intelligence

Mumbai, June 15: The recent advisory by the US administration asking US citizens not to travel to India, was not an arrow shot in the wild. It was based on a credible input, intercepted by Indian intelligence agencies, warning of an imminent terror threat.

Agency sources said that an unidentified number of fidayeen militants, who sneaked into India across the Jammu and Kashmir border some three months ago, following heavy fighting with the troops, had, perhaps, reached target cities in western and southern Indian states.

For Rs 110, man burns girl’s hands in hot oil

Varanasi, June 15: When 11-year-old Jyoti went to her relative’s house, she would have hardly thought about the nightmare of getting her hands burned in boiling oil as punishment for a mistake she hasn’t done.

Police are on the look out for Rustam of Kerakatpur village in the district on the charge of burning his cousin’s hands in boiling oil on Sunday. A case has been registered against him and his father.

Police said he did the cruel act on suspicion that she had stolen Rs 110 from his pocket.

New Delhi, June 15: Concerned at the rise in international crude oil prices, the Government is looking at solutions to tackle the widening revenue deficit and one of the options on the table could be raising petrol and diesel prices.

“We are seriously concerned about the rise in crude oil prices … We have to look for solutions,” Petroleum Minister Murli Deora told reporters after meeting Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee with his Budget wishlist.

RIL, global cues pull down Sensex

Mumbai, June 15: Dismal global cues and a court ruling against heavyweight Reliance Industries Monday pulled down a key index of the Indian equities markets by more than 362 points.

Investors also sought to book profits in metal stocks, that contributed to the sharp fall in the Sensex, the benchmark index of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

The Sensex, which opened lower than its Friday closing figure, dipped about 362.42 points or 2.38 percent to end at 14,875.52 points.

The Sensex had fallen to an intra-day low of 14,807.26 points and touched a high of 15,195.83 points.

Yashwant Sinha wants probe in leak of resignation letter

Ranchi, June 15: Two days after he resigned from all party posts, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Yashwant Sinha Monday sought a probe into how the contents of the resignation letter were leaked to the media.

“It would be in the interest of the party to investigate how the letter was leaked to the media,” Sinha, former external affairs minister, told reporters in Hazaribagh, his parliamentary constituency.

Sri Lanka military says LTTE submarine found

Colombo, June 15:Sri Lankan troops have recovered the first submarine believed to have been used by the defeated Tamil Tiger rebels, the military said on Monday.

Troops found the 24-foot (7.2-metre) submersible on the coast of the northeastern district of Mullaittivu, where the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were defeated last month, ending decades of ethnic conflict.

“It had reportedly been used by the LTTE, most probably by their senior cadres, for clandestine sea movements before the LTTE was wiped out,” the military said in a statement.

Taliban could spread into India, Persian Gulf, says Pakistan

Islamabad, June 15: Pakistan has warned that the Taliban could spread beyond its borders to neighbouring India and as far as the Persian Gulf, unless it receives international aid to help battle militancy on its soil, the Online news agency reported Monday.

Pakistan would need up to $2.5 billion in emergency aid and for long-term reconstruction of the Swat Valley and the neighbouring region, once the fighting between government troops and militants, now in its final stage, ended, Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said in an interview with the Financial Times.

Three arrested for creating ruckus outside Fiza’s house

Mohali, June 15: Police here arrested three people in the early hours Monday for allegedly creating a ruckus outside the house of Anuradha Bali aka Fiza, the estranged wife of Chander Mohan alias Chand Mohammed.

‘We have registered a case against four people out of which three were arrested. Police have also impounded a Bolero car with a Haryana registration number. We are still investigating and expect to make more arrests today (Monday),’ Deepinder Singh, investigating officer of the case told IANS.

Toronto, June 15: A Canadian woman was forced to strip at the Montreal airport to check a pink tattoo on her butt after her name and birth date matched that of a wanted criminal.

Sylvie Menard, 43, who is a manager with a wine company in Montreal, was returning home after holidaying in Mexico in April when the airport computer flagged her since her name and birth date matched that of a criminal sought by police, the Canadian Press reported Sunday.

Taking a cue, the Indian Army recently issued a circular asking its personnel not to post work-related information like ranks, place of posting etc on social networking sites like Orkut and Facebook.

“The circular has been issued recently in a bid to create cyber awareness among the net users in the army. It has been sent to all the units of the army across the country,” a senior army official confirmed to reporters, requesting anonymity.
