Sun TV down 3.5%; shares extend losses for 6th straight day

Shares of Sun TV Network on Monday fell by 3.5%, extending downfall for the sixth straight session, after the Union Home Ministry clarified last week that it will not give security clearance to the Kalanithi Maran-owned company.

The stock ended at Rs 280.05 , down 3.45% from its previous close at the BSE. During the day, it fell by 5.51% to Rs 274.05.

At the NSE, shares of the company went down by 3.24% to Rs 280.

The company’s market value fell by Rs 393.66 crore to Rs 11,036.34 crore.

In six trading sessions, the stock has fallen by 16%.

Congress seeks Supreme Court monitored probe in Vyapam scam

Congress on Monday demanded a Supreme Court-monitored probe into the high-profile MPPEB scam in Madhya Pradesh, claiming as many as 43 accused and witnesses have died under mysterious circumstances.

Party spokesman Tom Vadakkan also said the investigation should be conducted by a Special Investigation Team. MPPEB scam, also known as Vyapam scam, Vadakkan said, was one of the biggest scandals in independent India that needed to be probed by an independent SIT under the direct supervision of the apex court.

Mid-may meal horror: Over 60 kids fall ill in Bihar school

More than 60 students of a government primary school in Madhubani district of Bihar fell ill on Monday after eating mid-day meal, a police official said.

The incident happened at Bhavnathpur Primary School under Bhairav Sthan police station in the district.

The students were taken to a primary health centre (PHC) at Jhanjharpur from where 30 of them were released after preliminary treatment, the official said.

Facebook’s userbase touches 125 million in India

Social networking giant Facebook has added 13 million users in six months to take its userbase to 125 million in India, its second-biggest market globally.

The US-based firm, which had 112 million users in India as of December last year, also launched a 2G-friendly mobile app ‘Facebook Lite’ here to cater users with slow internet connectivity.

Globally, it has 1.44 billion monthly active users as of March 31, 2015 with the US as its biggest market.

Samsung to double battery life of your phone

Samsung is planning to double the battery life of your smartphone without increasing the size.

According to the engadget.com, Samsung’s scientists have developed lithium-ion battery technology that promises much longer-lasting power packs. They use a silicon anode, but grow layers of graphene on top to improve the density and longevity that would otherwise suffer.

The upgrade might not be showing up in the gadgets for a while.

This is still a research project and it could take years before Samsung translates its breakthrough into real-world products.

Twin blasts in Chad claim 11 lives

Twin blasts have rocked N’Djamena, the capital of Chad, killing 11 people, said witnesses.

According to Fox News, the first explosion was heard early today in the Dinguessou neighborhood of N’Djamena while the second took place six minutes later, said Souleymane Brahim, a local resident.

He said that the first explosion which took place at around 5:10 a.m. was followed by gunfire.

The residents said that the bodies of five police officials were among the 11 bodies counted after the blasts.

Amazon has announced that it will be launching a program which will provide loans to new businesses.

According to thenextweb.com, the idea is to help them get started and gain market share.

Reuters reports that selected sellers in Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Spain and the UK will be eligible for the loans from later this year.

The service has been in limited testing in the U.S. and Japan for a number of years. It offers three to six month loans of USD 1,000 to USD 600,000 to help new sellers buy inventory.

Uber launches intercontinental service

Uber has launched a new intercontinental service this week.

According to the Verge, the users can now hail an UberBoat to take them across the Bosphorous, the strait that divides the European and Asian halves of the city.

The company says in a blog post that users will see UberBoat service offered whenever they are near the waterside. The speedboats are owned and operated by a Turkish company Navette.

Rides could cost anywhere from roughly USD 20 to USD 150 depending on the destination.

Global Jewish population close to pre-Holocaust level, says report

The global Jewish population has reportedly grown as large as it was before the Holocaust, an annual report released by an Israeli think tank has said.

The Jewish People Policy Institute said that there were 14.2 million Jews in the world. According to the report, if individuals with one Jewish parent and others who were partially Jewish were factored in, the current figure would approach 16.5 million- the Jewish population on the eve of the World War II, reported Fox News.

Almost six million Jews were exterminated by the Nazis and their collaborators during the Holocaust.

Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Anil Wadhwa, on Monday said that India and Thailand have signed an MoU on Double Taxation Avoidance (DTA) agreement during the joint commission meeting held here.

“We have signed a very important MoU today on Double Taxation Avoidance (DTA) agreement which is going to help our investments. We also exchanged the ratification for the extradition treaty,” he said.

Noon turns midnight as heavy rains lash Jammu

The skies darkened and the lights came on as Jammu witnessed heavy rainfall on Monday afternoon.

“It was very hot for the past three or four days. Today it has started raining and it looks like the monsoons have finally reached Jammu. Now, the temperatures have finally dropped,” said Sunil, a local.

Chandra Mohan, another resident, felt that the rains would help the agriculture sector as well.

The best-selling book ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ author EL James raked in almost 20 million pounds in 2014, with a profit of 9.8 million pounds.

The legal accounts of the 52-year-old British author showed that the she took a dividend of 2.6 million pounds from the company in 2014, whereas she pockets 3.2 million pounds in 2013, the Guardian reported.

Chad nabs 60 suspected militants after twin suicide bombings

Chad has reportedly nabbed 60 suspected militants and busted a terror cell involved in the twin suicide bombings that took place in the African nation’s capital, N’Djamena, the chief prosecutor of the central African nation said.

Prosecutor Alghassim Khamis said that those arrested were from Chad, Cameroon, Mali and Nigeria, reported News24.

The blasts that targeted the police headquarters and one of its academies in N’Djamena killed 34 people, including four suspected Boko Haram militants, and injured dozens others. It was the largest attack of its kind in Chad.

A Bangladesh high court has reportedly cleared way for a lower court to continue proceedings against Bangladesh Nationalist Party ( BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case by striking down a petition filed by the opposition leader.

The petition asked the court to expunge the deposition of the investigation officer (IO) in the case, reported The Daily Star.

The verdict was passed by a bench comprising Justice Mohammed Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan, who said that recording the statement of the IO in the graft case was not illegal. (ANI)

OnePlus 2 preview leaked on internet

The preview of OnePlus’ latest smartphone One Plus 2 has been leaked on the internet.

According to the in.techradar.com, a @KJuma on Weibo has released a sketch of what the phone’s going to look like.

He also said that the OnePlus 2 will feature a screen between 5.5 and 5.7 inches, which is slightly larger than the 5.5 inches OnePlus One released last year.

OnePlus has already said that the phone is going to feature a USB Type-C connector and will have the Snapdragon 810 processor.
