CRPF jawan commits suicide in Shopian district

A CRPF jawan allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself inside his camp in Shopian district of Kashmir, police said on friday.

Constable Surender Kumar of 14 Battalion of CRPF shot himself with his service rifle last night inside the camp at Imam Sahib in Shopian town, the police said.

Police is trying to ascertain why the CRPF jawan took such an extreme step.

‘Double amputee’ Pistorius has been greatly affected by his disability

A sports doctor told Paralympic runner Oscar Pistorius’ murder trial that the double amputee has been greatly affected by his disability.

Defence witness Wayne Derman told the court that Pistorius suffered significant stress and anxiety.

According to the BBC, Pistorius claims that he shot his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year after mistaking her for an intruder in their house.

The prosecution argues that the athlete killed her deliberately after a row.

CRPF officer killed in anti-Naxal operation

A CRPF officer was today killed during an anti-Naxal operation in Jharkhand’s Giridih district.

The incident happened early today when a joint squad of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and state police was out for an operation in Lakheri area of Giridih district.

Officials said a heavy exchange of fire took place between the two sides and CRPF’s second-in-command H K Jha was seriously injured in the encounter.

“The officer later succumbed to his injuries.No other injuries have been inflicted on the forces side,” a senior officer said.

Prime Minister Modi flags off Katra-Udhampur train

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has flagged off the inaugural Katra-Udhampur train today on his first visit to Jammu and Kashmir after assuming office.

The Prime Minister flagged off a Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) which will serve as special train to the Hindu holy shrine of Vaishno Devi.

Katra – Udhampur rail line is around 25 kilometers long and consists of the 9.4 kilometers long Udhampur – Chak Rakhwal and 15.5 kilometers long Chak Rakhwal- Mata Vaishno Devi Katra sections.

Three killed in mishap in Udhaiti

Three youths were killed and another injured when two motorcycles collided with each other in Udhaiti area here, police said today.

Dev Singh (26), Anekpal (28) and Motiram (20) were killed when their motorcycles collided with each other on Bisauli-Islamnagar road yesterday, Additional Superintendent of Police O P Yadav said.

The injured youth has been admitted to the district hospital.

Kerala nurses given food by ISIS militants in Iraq: Chandy

The 46 nurses from Kerala, who were shifted from Iraq’s Tikrit city to Mosul by Sunni insurgents, have been put up in a building and have been given food, said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on Friday.

The women nurses reached Mosul close to midnight, said Chandy, who is in Delhi and closely monitoring the situation alongwith the External Affairs Ministry.

Chandy told a news agency over phone that the nurses have been given food and they have been put up in a building.

Ex-News of the World editor Coulson to be sentenced

Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson is due to be sentenced after being found guilty of conspiracy to hack phones.

Coulson, who went on to become director of communications for Prime Minister David Cameron, will be sentenced with three other former News of the World journalists, reports the BBC.

Forty-six-year-old Coulson will be sentenced alongside former news editor Greg Miskiw, former chief reporter Neville Thurlbeck and ex-reporter James Weatherup, all of whom admitted conspiring to hack phones.

Bodies of three youths with bullet injuries found in Bihar

Bodies of three youths having bullet injuries were found Wednesday at a village in Patna district.

People of Ramnagar Diara village in the district noticed the dead bodies and alerted the nearby police post. All the youths seem to be in the age group of 20 to 30 years, police said.

“Seeing the place of occurrence it seems the youths were killed somewhere else and their bodies were thrown at Ramnagar Diara village,” said Traffic SP Rajeev Mishra, who is currently holding the additional charge of Patna Rural SP.

Support for extremism wanes in Muslim-dominated countries

A survey has revealed that 66 percent of Pakistanis are concerned about religious extremism while 59 percent do not sympathize with the Taliban militants.

The survey was conducted by the Pew Research Center which interviewed about 14,200 people in 14 countries. It revealed that support for extremist groups and the fear of extremism has been waning fast in the Muslim-dominated countries of Middle East and South Asia.

The survey also showed that amidst the fledgling war in Syria and the rise in attacks by Boko Haram in Nigeria, concerns over extremism have risen over the past 12 months.

HRW tells Lanka Govt not to deport Pakistani minorities summarily

At least 142 Pakistanis arrested in police sweeps in Sri Lanka in June 2014 are being detained and are at risk of deportation, Human Rights Watch said today.

It further said that the Sri Lankan controller general of immigration should not deport members of Pakistani minority groups until the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has had full access to them and determined their need for international protection.

Delhi-Agra high speed train flags off for trial run

The Indian Railways on Thursday held a trial run of a semi-high speed train between New Delhi to Agra.

“The maximum speed of the train is 160 km/h. There are 10 coaches altogether and it is a trial run today. The speed of the train is more than the Shatabdi that runs from New Delhi to Agra. It will start running from November,” said DRM of Delhi Division, Anurag Sachaan.

“The fare will be decided by railway department. After this, a similar train for New Delhi to Chandigarh and New Delhi to Kanpur will be put into effect,” he added

Man sentenced to life for raping minor in UP

A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a court here for raping a 12-year-old girl in 2009.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Lukmanul Haq also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict Jony after holding him guilty Wednesday.

The girl, who belongs to a tribal community, was raped by her neighbour Jony when she was going to give lunch to her father who was working in the fields.

The convict, who also belongs to a tribal community, is already serving a jail term in another rape case.

Supreme Court rules out automatic arrests in dowry cases

The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that police cannot automatically arrest an accused in a dowry case before judicially examining it.

A bench headed by Justice CK Prasad directed all the state governments to instruct its police officers not to automatically arrest an accused in such cases.

The apex court expressed concerns over misuse of the anti dowry law.

Section 498-A of the IPC was introduced with object to combat the menace of harassment to a woman at the hands of her husband and his relatives.

2007 emergency: Musharraf’s lawyers list those who abetted it

Former President retired Gen Pervez Musharraf’s legal team drew up a list of eight meetings that the former President of Pakistan held with political and military leaders prior to imposing emergency and the sacking of Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, the then chief justice of Pakistan in 2007.

The list challenged the claims made by the prosecution earlier in which it said that it could not obtain the details of meetings that Musharraf held before Nov 3.

Chennai building collapse: Death toll rises to 53, Jayalalithaa orders probe

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday ordered a probe into the collapse of an 11-storey under-construction residential building here.

Jayalalithaa has set up a one-man commission to inquire into the incident. The panel will not only probe the reasons for collapse but also suggest corrective course of action.

The death toll in the incident has, meanwhile, risen to 53.

“The death toll stands at 53 as of now. Rescue work is continuing in full swing”, a senior Tamil Nadu government revenue official said on Thursday.

Twenty-seven people have been pulled out alive.

Odisha, one of India’s top vegetable producers, Thursday said it has deregulated fruit and vegetables from local market fees so that these can be available at lower prices to consumers.

“The government has exempted fruits and vegetable from the purview of the regulated market committees (RMCs) because these commodities are perishable and need to flow smoothly throughout the state,” Bishnupada Sethi, cooperation department secretary, told IANS.
