China prepares for an aging society

The Chinese government seems all set to build an elder-friendly society given the rising number of senior citizens in the country.

Ten ministerial-level departments, including the ministries of civil affairs and education, Monday jointly released a circular calling for the country to prepare for an aging society, Xinhua reported.

The circular stressed on the importance of building an elder-friendly society as the percentage of the senior population is rising quickly.

Three-year-old raped by teenager in UP

A three-year-old girl was raped allegedly by a 15-year-old boy in Dehat area of the district, police said here on Tuesday.

The accused lured the victim after promising her sweets and allegedly raped her late last evening, in-charge of Dehat police station Padam Singh said.

Police said the boy has been arrested and the girl, who is in a serious condition, has been referred to a Aligarh hospital.

Yasmeen Mohammad Al Mainmani, who has been dreaming about becoming a pilot from the time she was seven years old, trained in flying academies in Jordan and the US and recently became the second Saudi women to receive a commercial pilot license, Gulf News reported.

World’s very first tool-kit to manage ‘menopause’ launched

Scientists have created the world’s very first toolkit which has the potential to manage menopausal conditions globally among women above the age of 40.

Led by Professor Susan Davis, the research team from the Monash University combined the existing research on menopause, diagnostic algorithms and extensive clinical experience to develop the diagnostic tool. Designed for use by General Practitioners, it also works through a patient’s medical history and risk factors to arrive at the best treatment solution.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed and former J&K bank Chairman Haseeb A Drabu are in the list of 11 candidates released by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the forthcoming assembly elections in the state.

Sayeed will seek re-election from the Anantnag assembly segment while former Jammu and Kashmir Bank chairman Drabu has been fielded from his native Rajpora assembly seat in Pulwama district, PDP spokesperson, Naeem Akhtar said.

Fishermen protest arrests of their colleagues by Sri Lanka

Tamil Nadu Coastal Area Fishermen’s Association and the Fishermen’s Association on Monday decided to boycott fishing activities indefenitely from July 21 to protest against continuous arrest and attack on fishemen by the Sri lankan navalmen.

A meeting of the Associations was held here after 20 fishermen were arrested along with their four boats and were taken to Sri Lanka yesterday.

The fishermen also wanted the Centre to restore their fishing rights in the traditional areas in Palk Bay which included Katchatheevu, Jesuraja, president of the Fishermen’s Association told PTI.

World’s largest shopping mall with theme park to come up in Dubai

The Middle East emirate has announced their plans to build the world’s largest shopping mall titled “The Mall of the World” in Dubai, according to reports.

The largest shopping mall will have its own theme park, 20,000 hotel rooms and a inside climate-controlled dome, Metro.co.uk reported.

Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum said that this project complemented their plans to transform Dubai into a cultural, tourist and economic hub for the 2billion people that lived in the region around them and they were determined to achieve their vision.

Five policemen killed in Pakistan

At least five policemen were killed in two separate firing incidents in Pakistan, media reported Monday.

An official said three policemen were killed and one was injured late Sunday when some people riding motorbikes opened fire in Sindh province’s Hyderabad city, Xinhua reported.

The official said the policemen were on their routine patrol across the city when they stopped four suspected people riding two motorbikes.

In another incident in the city of Quetta in Balochistan province, two policemen were killed in firing by unknown gunmen.

Djokovic downs Federer in five sets to win second Wimbledon title

Twenty-seven-year-old Serb tennis star Novak Djokovic won his second Wimbledon title on Sunday night after a hard fought five set match against seven-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer.

Djokovic beat Federer 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 7-6 (7-4) 5-7 6-4 to secure his seventh Grand Slam title, reports the BBC.

He had lost his previous three major finals, and will now reclaim the number one ranking from Rafael Nadal.

After his win, an emotional Djokovic dedicated the title to his soon-to-be wife and forthcoming baby, and thanked Federer for ” allowing him to win”.

Budget Session of Parliament from today

The 42-day-long Budget Session of Parliament will begin from today and will have 28 sittings.

During this period, Railway Minister Sadanand Gowda and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will present the Narendra Modi-led NDA Government’s first Railway and General Budgets on July 8 and July 10 respectively.

The Economic Survey will be released on July 9. The session will end on August 14.

Pleasant weather continues in Uttar Pradesh

People across Uttar Pradesh experienced yet another pleasant day as rains continued in most of the regions Monday, bringing the temperature below the normal level.

The Met Office has already confirmed the arrival of monsoon. It said more rains may occur in many parts of the state for the next few days.

The schools reopened after a two-month-long summer break in Lucknow.

Lucknow received more than 27 mm rainfall since Sunday as a result the temperature plummeted by 7.4 degrees Celsius Monday, said a Met official.

Ten children taken unwell in Goa school

Ten school children Saturday complained of giddiness during a laboratory experiment in Goa’s Vasco town and were rushed to a hospital, a school spokesperson said.

They were later discharged after preliminary examination at the hospital in Chicalim village.

Students from St. Andrew’s school in Vasco, a port town located 35 km from here, complained of giddiness after inhaling some gases in the laboratory while conducting experiments, said the school spokesperson.

A new study has revealed that Chimpanzees are copycats and, in the process, they form new traditions that are often particular to only one specific group of these primates, as “grass-in-the-ear” has become a new trend.

According to the researchers, a female chimp named Julie repeatedly put a stiff, strawlike blade of grass for no apparent reason in one or both of her ears and left it there even when she was grooming, playing or resting, after which other chimpanzees also followed suit.

Six persons injured in clash in Meerut

At least six persons were injured in a clash between two parties belonging to different communities over a minor dispute here, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place last night when two youths belonging to different communities had an argument over a mere sum of hundred rupees, which one person owed to another, they said.

The argument later worsened as people from the two parties took to the streets and indulged in stone-pelting which left at least 6 persons injured, SSP Omkar Singh said.

The injured have been admitted to a hospital.

Official sentenced for accepting bribe in TN

The Special Court for Prevention of Corruption has convicted a Deputy Director of Fire and Rescue services in a bribery case and sentenced him for three and a half years imprisonment, besides slapping a fine of Rs 11,000.

His assistant Durairaj was also sentenced to one year in the same case.

The case was that Deputy director of Fire Service Noorudin, who was suspended from service pending investigation before his retirement, had demanded a bribe of Rs 5000 from fireman Nagarajan for effecting transfer from Kallikudi Fire service station to Sivakasi on September 29, 2003.

Six Taliban militants killed in Afghanistan

Six Taliban militants were killed and 10 others sustained injuries in a clash with security forces in Jarm district of Badakhshan province 315 km northeast of Kabul, a government spokesman said Saturday.

“A group of armed Taliban rebels attacked police checkpoints outside Jarm city Friday night and police returned the fire killing six militants on the spot and injuring 10 others,” Ahmad Naved Frutan, spokesman of the provincial government, told Xinhua.

There were no casualties among the security personnel, he added.

Bhopal: Boy gets locked inside car; dies of suffocation

A two-and-a-half year old boy died, allegedly due to suffocation after he accidentally locked himself in a car in busy New Market area here, a police official said on Saturday.

The incident took place yesterday when the kid identified as Atishay Jain, son of a local garment trader was playing in the shop and later took the keys of a car quietly and went inside the vehicle to play, his grandfather Kamal Jain told reporters.

Soon after the child entered inside, the car got locked and the windows remained closed causing suffocation, a sub inspector said.
