Two people injured after bomb explodes in Imphal

Two persons were injured after two powerful bombs planted by suspected militants exploded in Imphal.

The bombs might have been planted to target security personnel, said police sources. However, the explosion did not cause any harm to them.

The two injured men were identified as Kiran Laishram (45) a mason, whose condition was critical, and S.M. Kennath.

VVIP chopper scam: CBI questions Andhra Governor E S L Narsimhan

After West Bengal Governor M.K. Narayanan and Goa Governor B.V. Wanchoo, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday questioned Andhra Pradesh Governor E S L Narasimhan in connection with Agusta Westland VVIP Chopper scam.
Narasimhan was the Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief when the deal was signed. He is said to be a part of the meeting where the technical specifications for the helicopters were tweaked so as to enable AgustaWestland to qualify for the bidding.

Victim turns hostile in Balwakheri rape case

A 23-year-old teacher, who had alleged that she was raped by a youth in Balwakheri village in the district, has turned hostile in court.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Sunder Lal recorded her statement Tuesday under Section 164 CRPC (recording of statements and confessions) here.

The victim turned hostile and said that she was not raped by the accused here.

Police had earlier said that the teacher was allegedly raped by a youth at Balwakheri village on Saturday last and the act was videographed by two of his associates and all of them blackmailed her.

Couple attacked for eloping in UP

A couple was allegedly attacked and their car set on fire when they returned from Delhi, 10 years after eloping from here, police said Wednesday.

The incident took place yesterday when the couple Zahid (27) and Nazma (26) returned from Delhi in a car, following which the woman’s brother, along with others, attacked them and burnt the car, B N Prasher, Station House Officer (SHO) said.

Four others were also injured when they tried to save the couple, the SHO said.

WPI Inflation shows sign of receding fell to 5.98% during 2013-14

The Economic Survey 2013-14 states that in comparison to previous years, inflation is showing signs of receding, with the average wholesale price index (WPI) inflation falling to a three-year low of 5.98 per cent during 2013-14, compared to seven and nine per cent over the previous two years.

Salt melted ice to form water on Mars?

Researchers have discovered that water could have flowed on the surface of Mars with the help of salt present in the Martian soil that can melt ice.

The findings reveal that Martian salts can help liquid water form but only when the salts touche the ice.

“It takes ice to make liquid water on Mars,” said Nilton Renno, a planetary and atmospheric scientist at University of Michigan at Ann Arbor.

Researchers found that the conditions that support salty water on the Red Planet can last for a few hours per day during late spring and early summer at the polar regions of Mars.

Common set of genes influence math and reading skills in kids

A new study has revealed that the same set of genes play major role in influencing the child’s reading and mathematics ability.

Professor Robert Plomin from King’s College London said that this was the first time that they estimated genetic influence on learning ability using DNA alone and the study does not pointed to specific genes linked to literacy or numeracy, but rather suggested that genetic influence on complex traits, like learning abilities, and common disorders, like learning disabilities, was caused by many genes of very small effect size.

Two injured in three bomb explosions near Indo-Myanmar border

Two persons were injured when three powerful bombs exploded in Kasom Khullen area near the Indo-Myanmar border in Ukhrul district of Manipur, officials said Wednesday.

The explosions occurred near the post of 44th battalion post of Assam Rifles yesterday.

The bombs were allegedly planted by suspected militants to attack the security personnel.

The victims were identified as S P Keneth (41), a farmer, and Laishram Kiran (45), a labourer.

Both were admitted to a government hospital at Imphal where their condition was described as serious.

Gandhi’s statue to grace Parliament Square in London

Mahatma Gandhi, who led a mass struggle against the British Empire in India, will soon be honoured by the British Parliament with a statue in Parliament Square in London.

According to The Guardian, the announcement was made by Britain’s Finance Minister George Osborne at Gandhi Smriti, a memorial built for the ‘Father of the Nation’ at the site of his assassination.

The statue will be erected at the north-west end of the Palace of Westminister along side the statues of other important leaders like, Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela and Abraham Lincoln.

FIR over uploading Goa minister’s morphed photo

An FIR has been filed for uploading a morphed photo of Public Works Department Minister Sudin Dhavalikar in a pink swimsuit which went viral on Facebook last week.

“The FIR has been filed and the case has been transferred to the Cyber Cell,” Police official C.L. Patil told IANS Tuesday. The FIR, accusing Facebook users of uploading and circulating the morphed photo, was registered on Pradeep Bakhale’s complaint.

55 species of herpetofauna found in Manas landscape

At least 55 species of herpetofauna, comprising 20 amphibian species and 35 reptile species, have been recorded in a recent survey conducted in the Greater Indo-Bhutan Manas landscape.

The Indo-Bhutan Manas landscape is one the world’s single largest protected area landscapes and is known for its diverse assemblage of flora and fauna.

Dalit girl raped in UP

A 15-year-old Dalit girl was raped allegedly by a youth in Baniyather area, police said here on Wednesday.

The family members of the victim alleged that she was raped by a youth while his aide held her at gun point on Sunday night, it said.

The incident occurred when the victim was alone at her residence as other family members had gone to attend a wedding, police said.

A case was filed against Shauqeen and Akhtar last evening in this connection, they said, adding the accused were absconding.

India’s forest cover up: Report

India’s overall forest cover has increased by 5,871 sq km since 2011 and the maximum rise has been witnessed in West Bengal (3,810 sq km) followed by Odisha (1,444 sq km) and Kerala (622 sq km), a report released Tuesday said.

According to the biennial report “India State of Forest Report 2013” – the 13th in the series – the total forest and tree cover of the country is 78.92 million hectare which is 24.01 percent of its geographical area.

SBI ATM lifted from kiosk, money looted in Assam

A State Bank of India’s ATM was uprooted from its kiosk and Rs 5.38 lakh were looted from it by robbers in Kamrup (Rural) district, police said on Tuesday.

The bank’s agents had deposited Rs 45 lakh in the ATM near the Rangiya railway station last evening and a group of about 12 robber came late last night and lifted the entire machine and looted Rs 5.38 lakh while the remaining amount had been already withdrawn. The ATM was yet to be traced.

DUTA, student groups to hold protest today

The Delhi University Teacher’s Association (DUTA) and student groups will stage a protest on Tuesday reportedly demanding probe into the restructuring of courses for the Four-Year-Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) programme for students who took admissions in 2013.

Both DUTA and the students groups are calling for a meeting with the Delhi University Academic Council on the issue, as per news reports.

The protest is expected to take place on Tuesday afternoon.

Admissions to DU were delayed due to a row between the varsity and the UGC over FYUP’s continuation.

Minor girl killed in celebratory firing in UP

An 8-year-old girl was killed allegedly in celebratory firing during a marriage procession here, police said on Tuesday.

The incident took place last night when the groom’s father, Durgadutt Upadhaya, a BSP worker, fired from his licenced gun in Tabela gali while the marriage procession was on its way to a local guest house, V S Tyagi, Inspector Kotwali police station said.

Khushi was watching from the terrace of her house and suffered injuries in her stomach, he said, adding that she succumbed on her way to hospital.

Two killed, two injured in Assam road mishap

Two persons were killed and two others injured when a speeding truck and a car collided in Assam’s Kamrup (Rural) district on Tuesday, police said.

The car was on its way from Dhubri to Guwahati when it collided with the speeding truck at Shalani Shingra area under Boko police station. Two persons travelling in the car were killed while its driver was critically injured. One person travelling in the truck was also injured, the police said.

Missing Thai girl found dead, raped

The body of a 13-year-old girl who went missing on Sunday from a train in Thailand was found Tuesday.

The girl was travelling in an overnight train Sunday from the southern province of Surat Thani to Bangkok, the Bangkok Post reported.

According to officials, the girl’s naked body was found Tuesday around 4.00 a.m in Wang Pong sub-district.

Earlier Monday, a 22-year-old bedsheet replacement employee of the State Railway of Thailand, confessed to raping and killing the girl, before throwing her body out of a window.

Humid conditions prevail in national capital

Humid conditions prevailed in the national Capital on Tuesday even as the minimum temperature settled at 28.6 degrees Celsius, one notch above normal.

According to a MeT official, the humidity level recorded till 8:30 AM was 50 per cent.

The mercury, however, is expected to soar with the maximum tipped to touch 39 degrees Celsius. Weatherman has predicted partially cloudy skies with thundry conditions likely in some parts of the city.

“There is very less possibility of rainfall” an official said.
