Five more IIMs, IITs to come up

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Thursday said that five new IITs and IIMs will be set up across the country.

“…I also intend to set up five more IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) in Jammu, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala,” Jaitley said while presenting the budget for 2014-15.

“Five more IIMs (Indian Institutes of Management) would be set up in the state of Himachal Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Punjab and Maharashtra. I propose to allocate an amount of Rs.500 crore for this.”

18-yr-old raped at gunpoint in Muzaffarnagar

An eighteen-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a youth at gunpoint in Bhensaheri village here, following which a case has been registered against two persons, police said.

According to a complaint filed by the mother of the girl at Chapra Police Station, Rafik and Kalam entered the girl’s house yesterday. Kalam put the revolver on the girl’s head while Rafik allegedly raped her, SHO Arun Kumar Tyagi said.

The police has registered a case against the two in this connection, Tyagi said, adding, both the accused are absconding.

Neymar recovering ‘very well’ from fractured vertebra, reveals Barca

Barcelona has revealed that Brazilian striker Neymar’s is recovering very well from the fractured vertebra injury that ended his 2014 FIFA World Cup campaign.

Medical staff from Neymar’s club Barcelona visited the star striker at his home in Brazil to check on the problem and the player’s recovery.

A statement from the Spanish club said that the injury is progressing very well, reported The BBC.

The statement added that Neymar would continue his treatment from 5 August and the final stage of his recovery in Barcelona.

In what could alter the textbooks, researchers have declassified dinosaurs as being the great-great-grandparents of birds.

After re-examining a sparrow-sized fossil from China, they discovered that birds did not evolve from ground-dwelling dinosaurs.

“The birdlike fossil is actually not a dinosaur, as previously thought, but much rather the remains of a tiny tree-climbing animal that could glide,” explained researchers Stephen Czerkas from Dinosaur Museum in Blanding, Utah, and Alan Feduccia from University of North Carolina.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley has begun to present his maiden General Budget for the year 2014-15.

Jaitley began presenting the budget proposals for fiscal 2014-15 with the permission of Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan at 11 a.m..

He began the presentation by saying that he was doing so with the full knowledge that the people of India are passing through some tough economic times, and that the government is duty-bound to address those concerns brought on by a high fiscal deficit and a high level of subsidies.

Results included 100 videos with a cumulative 47 million views. The videos were shared a total of 101,173 times.

Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram on Wednesday appreciated the restrained language of the pre-Budget Economic Survey but expressed disappointment over it envisaging a five year period to put in place reforms.

South Korean company LG has unveiled a wearable device that helps parents to keep a track of their children.

LG’s Kizon is worn by children but is really meant for parents, letting them know where their kids are at all times with GPS, Wi-Fi, and a direct call button, CNET reported.

Kizon gives a new way for parents and their children to communicate via a ‘One Step Direct Call’ button, and if a parent calls their child and there’s no answer, Kizon will automatically connect the call and let the parents listen to what’s going on with a built-in microphone on the device, report said.

Over 50 million children infected with tuberculosis

A new study quantifying the global TB burden among children points to a huge undiagnosed reservoir of TB.

Researchers at the University of Sheffield, Imperial College London, and TB Alliance have found evidence that a large gap exists between the number of TB cases in children that get notified to authorities and the true underlying incidence.

The gap, detailed in a study published today in the journal.

Lancet Global Health, shows that TB in children is a major public health problem worldwide.

Robert Downey Jr.’s wife Susan Downey is expecting second child with the star and the couple confirmed that they will welcome a baby girl into the world in November.

Govt rejects study report on pollution level in India

Government on Wednesday rejected studies of WHO and Yale University which talked about India and its cities being among the most polluted, asserting that the parameters for determining air pollution were not considered by them.

Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said pollution is caused by many factors and the survey took cognisance of only air pollution and that is why India’s ranking in Yale University report has come down.

The origin of planet Mercury has been a difficult question in planetary science because its composition is very different from that of the other terrestrial planets and the moon.

This small, innermost planet has more than twice the fraction of metallic iron of any other terrestrial planet. Its iron core makes up about 65 per cent of Mercury’s total mass; Earth’s core, by comparison, is just 32 per cent of its mass.

BJP demands judicial probe into police firing

The opposition BJP on Wednesday demanded a judicial inquiry into police firing at Rohtas in which two persons were killed and nine others injured yesterday.

Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Sushil Kumar Modi told reporters that police firing on people reflected poor law and order situation in the state under JD(U) government. He demanded a judicial inquiry into the incident.

Sushil Modi said that the incident triggered by exchange of “objectionable” MMS by two friends of different communities on Monday was a fallout of “lapse” on part of district administration.

Girl commits suicide in Karnataka

A 17 year old girl allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the bridge into Phalguni river at Gurupur near here on Wednesday, police said.

Locals found the body of the girl, working as a sales girl in a textile shop, floating near the river bank at Gurupur Kaikamba Bridge, police said.

According to the local people, she was seen coming near the bridge in an auto rickshaw and jumped into the river as soon as the auto left. The reason for the suicide is not immediately known, police said.

20-year-old woman gang-raped in Faridabad

A 20-year-old woman was allegedly raped by three men, including her cousin, after she was forced to consume a cold-drink laced with sedatives by the accused here, police said on Wednesday.

The incident took place yesterday when the woman, a resident of Arya Nagar Ballabhgarh, was on her way to the market when she stopped by her cousin Bhupendra, they said.

Bhupendra asked her to have a cold-drink with him which she refused, police said, adding that later she had the cold-drink on his persistence, following which she fainted.

Study suggests faint galaxies illuminated early universe

A new study has found that the light from tiny galaxies more than 13 billion years ago played a larger role than previously thought in creating the conditions in the universe as we know it today.

According to a new study by researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, ultraviolet light from stars in these faint dwarf galaxies helped strip interstellar hydrogen of electrons in a process called reionization.
