New breed ‘metamaterials’ can put twist in light

Scientists have created a latest breed of materials known as metamaterials that can twist the light.

Mingkai Liu, a PhD student at the ANU Research School of Physics and Engineering (RSPE), said that this new material can rotate lights polarization, orders of magnitude more strongly than natural materials and they can switch the effect on and off directly with light.

Google play store game app receives flak for simulating MH17 crash

A new game in the Google play store, which is named after the Malaysian aircraft MH17, has garnered criticism for its concept that allows its users to fly a flight through a war zone and ends only when the flight crashes to the ground.

Terming it ‘appalling,’ The Daily Star reported that the app appeared on the Google Play store just hours after MH17 crashed in Ukraine killing everyone aboard.

Moth eyes inspire more efficient solar cells

Inspired by how moths use their eyes to see in the dark, scientists have created a new solar cell with drastically increased light collecting efficiency.

All over the world researchers are investigating solar cells which imitate plant photosynthesis, using sunlight and water to create synthetic fuels such as hydrogen.

Researchers at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa) developed such a photoelectrochemical cell, recreating a moth’s eye to drastically increase its light collecting efficiency.

Police arrests accused in brutal Lucknow murder case, puts to rest gangrape theory of victim

ADG Sutapa Sanyal on Sunday disclosed that the woman in her thirties who was earlier thought to have been raped was actually murdered by an accused who has been arrested.

The ADG also clarified that this was a one man operation.

“Accused have been identified, too much of hard work put in by UP police helped in solving case. The accused Ramsevak wanted to have physical relations with the victim. He killed her after failing in his attempts,” Sanyal said.

“We know from the literature that arm swinging plays an important role in balancing the motion of the swinging legs,” said Christopher Arellano from the Brown University.

Arellano studied 13 runners and measured their oxygen consumption rates and carbon dioxide that they exhaled.

Google’s Q2 earnings exceed analysts’ estimates due to boost in ad revenues

Search engine giant, Google has reportedly seen a 22 percent raise in revenue and 6 percent in profits from last year.

According to the BBC, a report released by Google said that its revenue went up to 16 billion dollars and profits rose up to 3.4 million dollars in the second quarter from March through June.

A surge in demand for Google’s advertising is being seen as the prime factor that pushed its revenue to new heights, the report added.

WHO says spokesman aboard crashed MH17

The World Health Organisation says its spokesman Glenn Thomas was on board the Malaysian jetliner that was shot down over Ukraine.

Gregory Hartl, a spokesman for the Geneva-based UN health agency, says the 49-year-old Briton was traveling to Melbourne, Australia, to attend the 20th International AIDS conference, which starts Sunday.

Hartl told reporters today in Geneva that Thomas, who regularly briefed journalists and responded to media requests for interviews and comment, had been with WHO for more than a decade.

Lankan politician Vidanapathirana, 3 others jailed for killing British tourist

A ruling party politician in Sri Lanka and his three accomplices were today sentenced to 20 years in jail for killing a British tourist and raping his Russian girlfriend more than two years ago.

High Court Judge Rohini Walgama found Sampath Pushpa Vidanapathirana and his three accomplices guilty of killing Khuram Sheikh and raping his girlfriend Victoria at a southern tourist resort on Christmas Day in 2011.

The murder followed an altercation between Vidanapathirana, the Chairman of the Tangalle Town Council, and 32-year-old Sheikh, an International Red Cross aid worker.

Four killed in Uttar Pradesh house collapse

Four people, including three children, were killed early Friday in Rae Bareli district of Uttar Pradesh when their house collapsed following heavy rain, police said.

The incident took place in village Hardoi of Bachhrawan region when following overnight rain, the roof of the house of Kishan Rahim collapsed early Friday morning, killing him and his three children.

Police said the house was in a dilapidated condition. Police personnel with the help of locals pulled out the bodies of the deceased from the rubble.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the loss of lives in the incident involving the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17.

Delhi to get more rain today

Delhiites woke up to an overcast Friday morning and saw light rainfall which is expected to continue through the day, the Met Office said.

The minimum temperature was 24.6 degrees Celsius – two notches below the season’s average.

“The sky will remain cloudy with rain and thundershower,” said an India Meteorological Department official.

The city recorded 56.7 mm of rainfall since late Thursday.
