Dalit girl eve-teased, photographed in Muzaffarnagar

A Dalit college student was allegedly eve-teased and photographed by two youths following which one of them was arrested at Mansoorpur village in the district, police said Monday.

The incident took place yesterday when the girl was going out from her house after which she was intercepted by the two youths, they said.

The accused eve-teased the girl, taking an objectionable photograph of hers and also threatened her with dire consequences if she revealed the incident to anyone, Circle Officer D K Mittal?told newspersons here today.

Five killed as car falls into gorge in Himachal

Five persons were killed when their car rolled 300 mts down into a gorge near Stiringri, seven kms from here, late last night.

The vehicle went off the road while negotiating a sharp curve and rolled down, police said Monday.

The occupants of the car were on their way from Jispa to Gondla via Keylong when the mishap took place.

The bodies of the deceased were recovered with the help of locals and sent for post-mortem.

The deceased included a retired DSP, Prem Chand Thakur, Chhering Angroop (65), Chhaten (70), Shivang (30) and Sonam Shering (13).

Two boys drown in a river in Bihar

Two boys drowned Monday in a river in East Champaran district of Bihar, the police said.

The two boys, identified as Vivek Kumar (15) and Vikki Kumar(14) accidentally slipped in the deep water and drowned, the police said.

The incident took place at Banarwa Ghat of Budhi Gandak river.

The bodies were later fished out by the divers and sent for post-mortem, they said.

Falling stone kills girl on way to Vaishno Devi

A nine-year old girl, on way to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu along with her family, was killed Monday after being hit by a falling stone, police said.

Vidushi, daughter of Rakesh Kumar from Uttar Pradesh, was hit by a falling stone near the helipad in Katra town of Reasi district.

“She died on the spot,” a police officer told IANS here.

Each year million of devotees from across the country pay obeisance at the Vaishno Devi Shrine here.

Two killed in wall collapse in Sitapur

An elderly person and his granddaughter were killed and three others of the same family were injured after the wall of their house collapsed at Chadra village in Maholi area here, police said Monday.

The incident took place yesterday morning due to rains when Chhotelal (50) and his granddaughter Radha (6) were sleeping and the wall of their house collapsed, killing them on the spot, they said.

Three other members of the family, who were injured have been rushed to the hospital where their condition is stated to be stable, police said.

England look on the verge of defeat after India set them a 319 target to win and also gave a superb performance with the ball on the fourth day of their second Test at Lord’s.

Another batch of devotees leave for Amarnath

Amid tight security, the 25th batch of pilgrims today left for the Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas from here.

As many as 1,491 pilgrims, including 939 men, 381 women and 21 children, left from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu in a cavalcade of 46 vehicles at 4:20 AM, police said.

The convoy has already crossed Patnitop on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway and would reach their destinations at Baltal and Pahalgam base camps by this evening, they said.

With today’s batch, a total of 45,402 pilgrims have so far left from the Jammu base camp for the Amarnath shrine.

Water level at 55.89 feet in Mettur

The water level in the Mettur dam this morning stood at 55.89 feet against the full level of 120 feet.

Inflow was 23,721 cusecs while outflow 800 cusecs, PWD officials said.

PWD sources said they were expecting 25,000 cusecs of water from Karnataka’s Kabani reservoir and 10,000 cusecs from Krishnaraja Sagar within few days.

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg clinched his fourth Grand Prix victory of this Formula One season while his teammate Lewis Hamilton came third in the German Grand Prix.

Hamilton fought his way up from 20th on the grid despite damaging his front wing in a collision at around half-distance when passing Jenson Button’s McLaren and finished third behind Williams’ Valtteri Bottas, who came second, and his teammate Rosberg.

Rosetta’s target comet has a double nucleus

Destination of ESA’s spacecraft Rosetta, 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, is a twofold comet as seen in the images obtained by OSIRIS, the onboard scientific imaging system recently.

Holger Sierks, OSIRIS Principal Investigator, said that the distance still separating Rosetta from 67P was now far from astronomical and it’s a trip of less than 12000 kilometers.

Two killed, five injured in Bhopal wall collapse

Atleast two people killed and five sustained injuries on Monday morning, when a wall collapsed on their building in which they were dwelling.

Superintendent-of- Police (SP) of North Bhopal, Arvind Saxena said, “Two people have died and other five are injured in the wall collapse. Case will be filled to investigate the reason for wall collapse. Also report will be taken from the wall construction authority, and if anybody is found guilty for the irresponsibility, then strict action will be taken against it.”

Following the recent Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 disaster, only four relatives of the Boeing 777 crash victims have requested to visit the crash site in Eastern Ukraine.

According to News.com.au, Malaysia Airlines initially anticipated a large takeup and offered to put on a charter flight to take distraught family members to Kiev and then by vehicle to the disaster zone nine hours away.

The consular officials in Australia had also reportedly made arrangements for the families of Australia n passengers onboard the ill-fated flight to travel to Ukraine.

McIlroy grabs third major title with two-shot win at Open Championship

Northern Irish golf ace Rory McIlroy grabbed his third major title with his first Open Championship title as he defeated Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler with a two-shot lead on the final day at Hoylake.

McIlroy, who has joined Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus as the only players to win three of golf’s majors at the age of 25, now just has the Masters left to complete a career Grand Slam.

McIlroy, who started with a six-shot lead, fired a final-round 71 to finish 17 under as Garcia, who three times got to within two strokes, shot 66 and US Open runner-up Fowler 67, The BBC reported.

Nagaland budget session begins Tuesday

The 5th session of the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly will begin on Tuesday.

The 5-day session assumes significance as this would be the first budget of the NPF-led DAN-III government led by Chief Minister TR Zeliang.

A study has revealed that consuming probiotics for a month helps in diminishing fat accumulation in the liver.

Scientists at the University of Granada have demonstrated that the administration of three probiotic strains diminishes the accumulation of fat in the liver of obese rats.

The authors have described that the administration of probiotics led to an accumulation of lipids (most of them triacylglycerides) in the liver which was significantly lower than that occurring in rats fed with a placebo.

Man from Manipur beaten to death

A 30-year-old man from Manipur has been allegedly beaten to death by a group of locals overnight in the city’s Kotla Mubarakpur area.

The brutal incident took place reportedly at 2.30 a.m when the Manipur man named Saloni was brought dead to AIIMS hospital.

A legal process would be inquired by the police in this matter.

Over Rs 1 lakh cr locked in excise, service tax litigation

Over Rs 1 lakh crore of taxes were locked up in various stages of litigation in service tax and central excise at the end of March 2013, official auditor CAG has said.

“As no action can be initiated for recovery of revenue till the appeal is pending, locking up of revenue of Rs 1 lakh crore is a matter of concern,” the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) said in its latest report.

It said that Rs 62,543 crore was pending at the end of March 2011, Rs 70,572 crore at the end of March 2012 and Rs 1,02,581 crore at the end of March 2013.
