Twins have low language performance in comparison to single-born kids

A recent study has revealed that the rate of language delay among twins is almost twice as compared to the single-born children.

Distinguished Professor Mabel Rice from University of Kansas, who studied 473 sets of twins since their birth, revealed that compared to single-born children, 47 percent of 24-month-old identical twins had language delay compared to 31 percent of non-identical twins, and overall, twins had twice the rate of late language emergence of single-born children.

Myopia increases with higher education

Researchers at the University Medical Center in Mainz, Germany examined nearsightedness in 4,658 Germans ages 35 to 74, excluding anyone with cataracts or who had undergone refractive surgery and found that myopia appeared to become more prevalent as education level increased.

The study found that 24 percent with no high school education or other training were nearsighted, 35 percent of high school graduates and vocational school graduates were nearsighted, while 53 percent of university graduates were nearsighted.

Top Naxal commander killed in Jharkhand

In a pre-dawn operation, security forces on Wednesday killed a prominent Naxal commander operating in Jharkhand in the forests of Khunti district of the state.

According to preliminary information reaching the headquarters here, the Naxal commander Vishal alias Tulsi alias Tadit, also the Special Committee member of CPI (Maoists) was gunned down by security forces in the jungles of village Limba-Sosokutti in the district.

Expecting mothers with normal pregnancy are not prevented from travelling by airplane, train, four-wheelers, but they need to be cautious, says an expert.

“Pregnant women can travel as long as they feel comfortable and everything is normal. Four-wheelers are safer than two-wheelers or autos. Two-wheelers are poorly balanced and can even give backache.

“The same goes for autos, so they should request the driver to drive slowly if they choose to opt for these transports,” gynecologist Mugdha Raut, managing director of Dr.Raut`s Women`s Hospital, Mumbai said.

World Bank chief to meet Arun Jaitley today

World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim will on Tuesday meet Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and thereafter Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday to review key development priorities.

Kim, who reached India yesterday, visited the state of Tamil Nadu. “Tamil Nadu continues to be a source of development knowledge for projects across the world,” Kim said.

The World Bank group feels urbanisation can improve lives as 10 million people move into towns and cities every year in India.

It also feels power utilities in India are not run on commercial lines, leading to poor performance.

FIFA ‘bidding’ scam report delayed by several weeks

FIFA prosecutor Michael Garcia’s report on alleged World Cup bidding scam has been reportedly delay ed by several weeks.

The report, which was earlier expected to be delivered late-July, is expected to come out in early September.

FIFA said that the ethics committee’s investigatory chamber expects to submit its report in the first week of September, News 24 reported.

However, Garcia set a target of late July to deliver his confidential report to ethics judge Joachim Eckert.

Body of guerrilla found in Jammu and Kashmir

The Border Security Force (BSF) on Tuesday recovered the body of a slain guerrilla after an infiltration bid was foiled in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

“The body of the intruder, who was killed in firing by the BSF near Karol Mathura border outpost in Hiranagar sector, has been recovered,” a senior police officer told IANS here.

“Nothing was recovered from the body,” he said.

On Monday, the BSF foiled an infiltration bid after a group of intruders who were forced to withdraw into Pakistan.

JD-U inching closer to forging alliance with Lalu’s RJD

The chief of the Bihar unit of the Janata Dal-United (JD-U) party, Vashisht Narayan Singh, on Tuesday, said that his party is inching closer to the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), but added that the timing of meeting RJD chief Lalu Yadav is yet to be decided.

Singh said, “Time has not been fixed (to meet Lalu) till now. When talks will be done with him (RJD chief) and time will be fixed, then, I will be able to say something. But this is for sure that we are coming closer and supporting each other. We expect that this will give way to our future plans as well.”

Inching closer to the red planet, India’s ambitious Mars orbiter spacecraft has covered more than 540 million kilometres, about 80 per cent of its journey for its rendezvous with the planet scheduled for September 24.

The spacecraft has covered a distance of more than 540 million kilometres on its helio centric journey to the red planet, ISRO said today.

“Yes, that is very close to a whopping 80 per cent”. Mars Orbiter mission and its payloads are in good health”, ISRO said on its social networking site.

From Moon to Mars, Armstrong will always be there

Honouring the first moonwalker Neil Armstrong, NASA has renamed the historic “operations and checkout building” at the Florida-based John F Kennedy Space Centre as the “Neil Armstrong operations and checkout building”.

The John F Kennedy Space Centre was built in 1963 for the Apollo Moon programme.

Currently, the building is being used to assemble the first Orion spacecraft that NASA hopes will carry astronauts on flights beyond the Moon and to Mars.

The vehicle currently being outfitted is set for an uncrewed test flight in December.

No room for Rane in Shiv-Sena: Sanjay Raut

Shiv Sena Member of Parliament (MP) Sanjay Raut today said that there is no room for former Maharashtra industries minister Narayan Rane in his party.

“The way he left Shiv- Sena was bad. Such leaders are not welcome in the party. Our party chief has made it clear that there is no question of Rane coming back,” said Raut.

Yesterday, Rane resigned from the state cabinet.

Tutor arrested for molesting girl student in Maharashtra

A coaching class tutor here has been arrested for allegedly molesting a teenage girl student, police said.

According to ASI Mhaske of Virar police station, accused Jayprakash S Gabre (37) repeatedly molested the girl between May and July this year when she came for the classes.

The accused used to touch her inappropriately. Fed up of the constant abuse, the girl opened up to her parents after which a complaint was registered with the Virar police station.

The tutor has been charged under section 354 of the IPC and also under Section 7 and 8 of the POSA Act, police said.

Sri Lankan Navy arrests 38 Tamil Nadu fishermen

Thirty-eight fishermen from Kottaipattinam and Rameswaram were arrested by Sri Lankan Navy personnel early Tuesday on charges of crossing International Maritime Boundary Line.

The Lankan Navy personnel also seized nine of their boats, “Q” Branch Inspector Kennedy and A Jesuraja, the president of the Fishermen Association, said

While 20 fishermen and four boats from here were taken to Talaimannar, 18 fishermen from Kottaipattinam and their five boats were taken to Jaffna, they said.

Indexeus, a new search engine, enables users to look up login credentials from over a hundred hacks, including the recent high-profile Adobe and Yahoo dumps.

However, the search engine exposes the credentials from only those websites and forums that are quite popular with the hacker community, The Verge reported. It means that the search engine is trying to market itself to the same hackers who it is trying to expose.

Hackers can also pay a fee of one dollar per record to get their credentials removed from the search engine.

Minor fire at Delhi Police Headquarters

A minor fire broke out today at the Delhi Police Headquarters at I.T.O in New Delhi.
A fire officer present at the location said, “Around 7- 7.15 am in the morning we got a call. We came with two fire vans as the fire was a minor one. The main UPS power backup caught fire but everything is under control now.”

“There are no casualties or any other loss of files,” he added.

City police recover 43 illicit weapons, five arrested

In a major arms haul, police in the national capital recovered 43 illicit weapons in the city, and arrested five men after a year-long search operation.

Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), New Delhi, S.N. Srivastava, said such illicit weapons were often used and abused by criminals.

He said the weapons were being made in Bihar’s Munger District and were transported to other cities in east of the country once the Special Cell of New Delhi began investigations during early 2013.
