It was a cloudy Thursday morning here with a minimum temperature of 27 degrees Celsius, the season’s average. The Met Office has forecast spells of rain in the day.

“The sky will remain cloudy with rainfall and thundershowers in some parts of the city,” said an India Meteorological Department official.

The day’s maximum temperature is likely to hover around 34 degrees Celsius.

Humidity at 8.30 am was 78 percent.

A new study has revealed that individuals who have lost either of their parents during childhood, have 50 percent greater risk of mortality risks in their adulthood than those unexposed to parental death.

The authors said that parental death in childhood was associated with a long-lasting increased mortality risk from both external causes and diseases, regardless of child’s age at bereavement, sex of the child, sex of the deceased parent, cause of parental death, as well as population characteristics like socioeconomic background.

Facebook’s Q2 profits double on back of strong mobile ad sales

Social networking company Facebook’s profit has doubled reaching 791 million dollars while its total revenue rose from 1.8 billion dollars to 2.9 billion dollars in the second quarter of 2014.

Facebook’s more than a billion users reportedly use mobile devices to go online that amounts to 62 percent of the company’s overall advertising tallies in the second quarter.

Facebook’s sales from mobile devices are increasing at a rapid pace.

Almost 1.1 billion users accessed the site at least once using a mobile device.

Bangalore rape case: School chairman gets bail

Chairman of Vibgyor High International School Rustom Kerawalla, who was arrested in connection with the alleged rape of a six-year-old student by the school’s two staff members over three weeks ago, has been granted bail.

Police arrested Kerawalla at Daman and Diu off Goa on Tuesday night and brought him to Bangalore on Wednesday for his culpability in the heinous crime. He was later let off on conditional bail.

Spate of rainfall lashed several parts of Madhya Pradesh with the state recording an average of 103 cm rainfall in the last 24 hours, Met officials said.

According to an official release, Madhya Pradesh received an average rainfall of 103 cm yesterday across the state, with districts of Annupur, Balaghat, Seoni, Tikamghar receiving heavy downpour.

Entire Malwa region, including districts Barwani, Dhar, Indore, Jhabua, Alirajpur, Khandwa, Kharone, Neemuch, Ratlam and Ujjain, however, remained dry with scanty rains.

Controversy over Lucknow woman’s autopsy heats up

The controversy surrounding the autopsy of a woman gang raped and murdered near Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh last week turned murkier on Wednesday with the opposition parties accusing the government and police of a whitewash job.

The 32-year-old woman was brutally gang raped and then killed in Mohanlalganj on the outskirts of state capital Lucknow last Thursday.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has ordered a probe into the lacunae in the autopsy report of the woman.

Bomb explosion in Assam kills one, injures four

A bomb explosion in Assam’s Goalpara district claimed one life and injured three others on Wednesday.

The blast happened near the Krishnai Police Station at 8 a.m. this morning.

The dead person has been identified as Rehman. The three injured have been identified as Akhtar Hussain, Kashimuddin and Jehrul Islam respectively.

At least five people were killed when Taliban militants attacked a vehicle in Afghanistan’s Laghman province, an official said on Tuesday.

“Armed militants fired on a running sedan along a road in Alinagar district late on Monday,” Xinhua quoted the official as saying.

Speeding car kills three and injures three in Ahmedabad

A speeding car killed three and injured three others in Ahmedabad on Wednesday.

Eyewitnesses told ANI that the car, a Hyundai I-20, was being driven by a 13-year-old boy at a speed of around 120 kilometers per hour when the accident happened.

“The speeding car went out of control of the driver and smashed the people sleeping on the roadside thereby killing three and severely injuring three others. The boy tried to run away with the car after the accident but was caught later,” said one eyewitness.

13 militants die in Pakistan airstrikes

At least 13 militants were killed on Wednesday during air strikes carried out in Pakistan’s North Waziristan region.

According to military officials, six militant hideouts were destroyed in the airstrikes in the Shawal mountains and the area near Dattakhel, Dawn online reported.
So far, more than 400 militants, mostly foreigners, have been killed during the Zarb-i-Azb military operation.
The operation was launched by the army on June 15 following a brazen Taliban terror attack on Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport on June 8.

The horse of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II has failed a drug test, it has been revealed.

The Queen had cheered her horse Estimate on to success at the Gold Cup in 2013 but the five-year old is in the dock now as he tested positive for banned substance morphine.

According to CNN, the Queen had been present at Ascot racecourse last year to see her horse win one of the world’s most prestigious races. However, Estimate missed out narrowly on defending that crown last month, after which the drug is thought to have been consumed.
