PM concerned over declining sex ratio

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today voiced concern over the declining sex ratio in 100 districts of the country, with situation being “more serious” in Haryana, and pitched for a campaign to save girls through the social media.

Talks between Iran and the US enter a “critical phase” today with tensions rising just three days from a deadline to nail down a deal thwarting any Iranian nuclear arms drive.

EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini was due to arrive during the day after US Secretary of State John Kerry and his Iranian counterpart appeared to have made little headway when they returned to the negotiating table in Vienna yesterday.

“Obviously we are at a critical stage now,” a Western diplomat said. “It’s become more tense in the final days. But that was always likely to happen.”

Minorities can self-attest community certificates to get benefits of government schemes

People belonging to minority communities will no longer have to secure certificates from officials to avail of benefits of welfare schemes, with the government making it clear that self-attestation was enough.

“In this context, it is informed that minority certificate is not mandatory for getting the benefits of welfare schemes being implemented by the ministry,” the Ministry of Minority Affairs has said in a recent communication to the states.

The government has notified six communities as minorities — Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis and Jains.

Rao was prime minister from June 21, 1991 to May 16, 1996.

He was born on June 28, 1921 at Karimnagar in Telangana and died in 2004.

Number of injured rises to 474 in Taiwan park fire

A fire, which was suspected of resulting from explosion of a large amount of unknown flammable powder, in a recreational park in Taiwan’s New Taipei city on Saturday has injured at least 474 people.

Suffering various degrees of burns, the injured had been rushed to dozens of hospitals in New Taipei city and nearby cities of Taipei and Taoyuan, Xinhua reported citing the local public health department.

The fire broke out at about 9:52 p.m. at the main stage of a water park, which was having a Colour Play Asia party.

Four youths gangrape 20-year-old, held

A 20-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by two youths in Vemuru village near Tenali town in Guntur district, police said today.

The incident took place last night and police arrested four accused, including two youths for abatement, early today.

“The victim and her 22-year-old boyfriend, who belong to a nearby Kollur village, had come to Vemuru railway station last night to catch a train. They had run away from home and planned to tie a knot as their parents were opposed to their marriage,” Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Tenali, K Sowjanya said.

Leopard enters residential area in Uttar Pradesh

A leopard was captured by forest department officials on Saturday after it entered into a residential area of Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit district.

According to locals, this leopard has been coming to the residential area since the past 6-7 days.

“This leopard has been eating our dogs and hens. We are not able to sleep at night,” said a local.

A 25-year-old woman was arrested for killing her husband with the help of her lover, police said on Saturday.

Gulistan and her lover Rizwan Saifi, in his late 20s, were arrested for strangling Salim on Thursday night inside his house in east Delhi’s New Ashok Nagar area.

Salim, 35, stayed with his wife Gulistan and two children. Saifi, who is a distant relative, also lived with them.

US Secretary of State John Kerry joined the Iranian nuclear talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius here on Saturday as the June 30 deadline approached.

The talks were the latest efforts in a bid to reach a long-term deal to end Tehran’s disputed nuclear programme, Xinhua reported.

The sides made some progress on April 2 in Switzerland but significant gaps remain over the sequencing of sanctions relief and the clarification of Iran’s controversial nuclear activities.

24 killed in airstrikes, clashes with IS in Iraq

At least 24 people were killed and 24 wounded on Saturday in Iraqi airstrikes and clashes with Islamic State (IS) militants across Iraq, security sources said.

In Anbar province, at least 12 IS militants were killed when an Iraqi aircraft carried out an airstrike on an IS position in the town of Qaim, near the Iraqi-Syrian border, a provincial security source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

Separately, an army helicopter gunship pounded the city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of Baghdad, leaving four people dead and seven injured, the source said.
