PM’s gift to South Korean president: Poem by Tagore

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday presented South Korean President Park Geun-Hye with two finely woven pashmina stoles inscribed with a poem by Rabindranath Tagore.

The poem, written specially for Korea, is hand-embroidered in English and Korean.

The text of Tagore’s poem that was published in 1929 in the Korean daily Dong-A Ilbo is:

In the golden age of Asia
Korea was one of its lamp bearers
And that lamp is waiting
To be lighted once again
For the illumination of the East

Kerry confident about combating IS

US Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday said he was confident about the fight against the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group despite setbacks like the loss of the city of Ramadi in Iraq.

Kerry, who is traveling through Korea, said the fight against the terrorist group would be a long one, and that it would be tough in the Anbar province of western Iraq where Iraqi security forces are not built up, NBC News reported.

He said that Ramadi was a “target of opportunity” but he was confident that in coming days, the loss could be reversed.

Farmers will give zero marks to Modi government, says Rahul

Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Monday attacked the Narendra Modi government, saying farmers and the poor will give it “zero” marks over its performance while the prime minister’s industrialist friends will give full marks on completion of one year in office.

On a visit to his Lok Sabha constituency of Amethi, Gandhi said he was asked by a journalist to rate the Modi government on a scale of 1 to 10.

Gandhi said he can tell how people will give marks.

Ending infiltration from Pak will take time: Rajnath

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh said that the government was making all efforts to stop infiltration from across the border but admitted it would take some time.

Talking to reporters after a function in Pratapgarh in Rajasthan, Singh said it was impossible to stop infiltration as the border with Pakistan has not been fenced completely.

•The maximum duration of the fellowship is two years.

PG entrance test for Private Medical Colleges opposed by SFI

Students’ Federation of India declared its opposition for conducting PG entrance test for private medical college on 30th May. Addressing a press conference yesterday, Secretary of SFI, Mr. Shaik Noor Mohammed told that very recently, Govt. decided to allocate category II seats to private medical college managements. Govt. has forgotten that medical education has become in accessible to the poor sections of society. Now Private medical colleges are conducting entrance test on 30th May to fill up seats under category II. He alleged TDP that it is working in the interest of the capitalists.

Urdu disappeared from GHMC logo

People had high hopes that Urdu would be promoted during the TRS rule in Telangana. Mr. KCR and Mr. Mahmood Ali gave assurances in Assembly and Council that Urdu would be promoted. KCR made a speech in Urdu. It was expected that the other department would follow the footsteps of KCR but all these dreams were shattered when after TSPSC, Telangana Education Department, GHMC also removed Urdu from its logo. Hyderabad is the largest center of Urdu speaking population. Every second citizen of Hyderabad knows Urdu reading and writing.

PM Modi’s foreign tours a national duty: Venkaiah

Taking a dig at Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi for criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his foreign visits, Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu today said Modi’s schedule is in public domain and not a secret.

Defending Modi against Congress’ barbs over his “frequent” foreign tours, Naidu said they were meant to attract investments for India and the PM is undertaking the visits as part of his national duty.

Class 10 student raped and blackmailed through MMS

A class 10 student was allegedly raped by a boy who she befriended on Facebook at Sihanigate area here, following which the accused was arrested, police said today.

The accused, a resident of Govindpuram and son of a policeman deployed at Sihanigate area, befriended the girl on the social networking site some years ago, police said.

The boy took the girl to his home and raped her after intoxicating her, police said, adding, he also made a MMS of the student, they said.

Modi govt turning to be of unitary form: Yechury

The CPI(M) today accused the BJP-led NDA dispensation of moving towards “unitary form of Government” by eroding special category status given to northeastern states in violation with the country’s federal structure.

The party’s statement comes in the wake of reports of Chief Ministers of northeastern states recently expressing fears that the Centre would discontinue the region’s special category status which assures them of financial support from Central Government.

Palestinian officials late on Sunday complained that Israel is depriving them of using 3rd generation mobile telecommunications technology, causing substantial losses for cellular phone companies and customers.

Ammar al-Ikker, executive director of the Palestinian telecommunication group, told Xinhua news agency that Israel is about to start implementing fourth generation technology, complaining that his fellow people are still using second generation technology.

Saudi-led coalition resumes bombing on Yemen’s Houthis

Saudi-led alliance resumed its air raids against Yemen’s Shiite Houthi group in the southern port city of Aden shortly after a five-day truce expired late on Sunday, army sources said.

War planes of the coalition bombed the presidential compound, which is controlled by the Houthis, said the same source and eye-witnesses, Xinhua news agency reported.

The bombing came as the UN envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed urged all warring parties to extend the short humanitarian cease-fire.

Sonia, Priyanka on private visit to Shimla

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra arrived here on three-day private visit.

They flew to Chandigarh and arrived at a hotel near Charabra, 15 km from here, by road.

Priyanka had bought 4.25 bigha land in the serene pine surroundings near The Retreat, the summer holiday resort of the President of India, and was building a house there.

After a brief halt at the hotel, accompanied by two architects, Sonia and Priyanka visited the construction site.

After inspecting the site for about two hours, they returned to the hotel.

ICC refuses to send umpires for Pak-Zimbabwe series over security concerns

The International Cricket Council has citing security concerns declined to send umpires to Pakistan to oversee the upcoming limited-overs series against Zimbabwe.

The ICC, however, has proposed that local umpires could be appointed by the Pakistan Cricket Board, the BBC reported.

Zimbabwe’s tour to Pakistan had been called into question following a terrorist attack in Karachi on Wednesday. However, the African nation’s cricket board received a green signal from their government after assessing the security situation in Pakistan.

CPI (M) to intensify protest against fuel price hike

CPI (M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury on Sunday called upon the central trade unions and party units to intensify protests against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA Government over the recent hike in fuel prices.

“We have called upon all our party units to intensify protest on the petrol and diesel hikes, on the growing agrarian distress, and also on the various other economic measures that are being contemplated,” Yechury said at a media briefing here.

Samsung and Samsonite have joined hands to come up with satellite-tracked suitcases .

The new generation “smart luggage” relays location to owners’ smartphones and will use GPS to track their location, alerting travelers when their luggage is unloaded from an aircraft or about to appear on the carousel, the Verge reported.

Samsonite chief executive Ramesh Tainwala asserted that smart luggage will be able to communicate with the traveller but it needs to be able to do much more than just give its location.

PM Modi attends Mini-Naadam Festival in Ulaanbaatar

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday attended the Mini-Naadam Festival in Ulaanbaatar.

Prime Minister Modi was accompanied by his Mongolian counterpart Chimed Saikhanbileg, with the former trying his hand at archery at the festival.

Ministry of External Affairs official spokesperson Vikas Swarup took to twitter to share the information.

“The synchrony of nature and culture, in the Mongolian steppes. Indian and Mongolian PM’s at the Mini-Naadam Festival,” he posted.

“Aiming for the sweet spot. PM @narendramodi tries his hand at archery at the Mini-Naadam Festival,” he added.
