US envoy favours India-Pakistan trade enhancement

US Ambassador to India Richard R. Verma on Wednesday favoured enhancement of trade between India and Pakistan, and said he would certainly do whatever was possible to push both the governments to resolve the issues at the earliest.

“There is indeed immense potential to save huge transportation costs and time if more and more trade is done through land route via the Attari-Wagah border,” he said.

He was here in the Punjab border town to listen to Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) concerns and possible solutions to enhance trade between India and Pakistan through the land route.

5 kg kidney tumour removed from patient in Delhi

Doctors at the All India India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) here said on Wednesday they had removed a kidney tumour weighing 5.018 kilograms, claimed to be the world’s biggest, from a 66-year-old patient.

A native of Bihar’s Darbhanga, K.L. Das, has been living here for the last 25 years initially underwent tests in January at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, where a huge mass on the right side of his abdomen was detected.

He further consulted doctors at AIIMS.

Iran not to succumb under pressure at n-talks: Khamenei

In what could be called a first setback to the framework agreement between Iran and the world powers, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed on Wednesday that Tehran would not accept “unreasonable demands” by world powers during negotiations over its disputed nuclear programme, and ruled out letting inspectors interview its atomic scientists.

Petrol, diesel costlier in Punjab

Petrol and diesel will be costlier in Punjab with the government deciding on Wednesday to levy Re.1 cess on petrol and diesel. Electricity and sugar will also be dearer.

However, it reduced stamp fee on power of attorney registrations from two to 0.5 percent.

These decisions were taken at a meeting here of the council of ministers chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal.

Sunanda murder case: Tharoor’s aides to undergo polygraph test

A court here on Wednesday allowed Delhi Police to conduct lie-detector tests in the Sunanda Pushkar murder case on three suspects, closely associated with her husband and former union minister Shashi Tharoor.

Metropolitan Magistrate Sunil Kumar Sharma, during an in-camera proceeding, allowed police to conduct the polygraph test on three suspects after the trio give their consent.

Police had last week moved an application seeking a lie detection test for the three suspects — Tharoor’s domestic help Narayan Singh, his driver Bajrangi and his friend Sanjay Dewan — in the murder case.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lt Governor Najeeb Jung today took their bitter fight to President Pranab Mukherjee and accused each other of violating the Constitution and overstepping their respective jurisdictions.

Hours before Kejriwal met the President, Jung, in a sudden turn of events, called on Mukherjee and apprised him of the ongoing tussle over the appointments of key bureaucrats in the Delhi government with sources maintaining that it was a “constitutional crisis-like situation in Delhi”.

Ministry of Civil Aviation has almost decided to handover old Airport of Hyderabad at Begumpet to Indian Air Force. Till 2008, Airport Authority of India was managing Begumpet Airport. This was started during Asif Jahi period. It was closed down on 23rd March 2008 for the civil passengers. All the flights and other operations were shifted to the newly constructed Shamsabad Airport. Rs. 25 crore for Pre-Matric scholarships to Minorities

Dept. of Minorities Welfare, Govt. of Telangana sanctioned Rs. 25 crore for the year 2015-16 for pre-matric scholarships to Minorities Students. Mr. Syed Omer Jaleel, IAS, Special Secretary to Govt. issued a GO yesterday which allocates Rs. 5000 for the students studying in KG-V standard and Rs. 6000 for VI-X standard. Last year only 1.76 lakh students could get this scholarship. After granting Central Scholarships, many students were deprived of getting scholarships due to lack of funds. Govt. of Telangana has sanctioned Rs. 25 crore to benefit the remaining students.

Congress targets Badal Govt. over road costing 29 crores

The Congress on Tuesday criticised the Punjab Government for constructing a road costing over 29 crores.

The party said it would be request President Mukherjee to form a committee to look into the omissions of the state government.

Tripura’s designated Governor prays for strengthened Indo-Bangladesh Relationship

The new designated Governor of Tripura, Tathagata Roy, who will be sworn tomorrow, arrived here on Tuesday afternoon from Kolkata.

He was received with a guard of honour at the Raj Bhavan in the presence of Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and his cabinet colleagues and other high officials.

Speaking to reporters here, Roy said that he has a soft corner for Tripura and Bangladesh, from where his forefathers had migrated to West Bengal, and added that the existing relationship between India and Bangladesh should be strengthened.

Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel was on Tuesday critical of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s comments made during his foreign tours and asked why those occupying the highest offices today become ‘self centric’ when they go abroad.

“Why those who occupy the highest offices today become self centric instead of country centric when they go abroad?” Patel said on Twitter.

Hashimpura case verdict: UP govt to move Delhi HC

The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to challenge the 1987 Hashimpura massacre case verdict in Delhi High Court, almost two months after a Sessions court gave benefit of doubt and acquitted 16 former PAC personnel accused of killing 48 Muslims in Meerut.

“We expect the appeal will be filed on May 22 or May 25,” Additional Advocate General Zafaryab Jilani told PTI after a meeting of Muslim leaders here with ruling Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Pak minister calls madrassas ”univs of ignorance”

A Pakistani minister has courted controversy after he called madrassas as “universities of ignorance”, drawing strong reaction from seminaries in the country which demanded his removal.

“These universities of ignorance, to whom we give donations and (animal) hides, are giving an ideology of hatred and conservativeness to the society,” Information Minister Pervaiz Rasheed said recently.

His remarks created a storm among hardline groups, which ran some of these madrassas, terming the minister as an “apostate”. They took to streets to demand his sacking.

Church wants to increase wine production to meet demand

Citing growth in number of Churches, Syro-Malabar Catholic Church in Kerala has approached the state Excise Department seeking permission to increase the capacity of the church-owned mass wine production facility near here.

At present the facility in Thrikkakkara owned by the Archdiocese of Ernakulam-Angamali is allowed to produce 1,600 litres of mass wine per year. The Church now wants to increase it to 5,000 litres per annum.

Man kills daughter to marry his neighbour

A man allegedly killed his 11-year-old daughter in south-west Delhi’s Baba Haridas Nagar as he considered her to be an obstacle in marrying his neighbour with whom he was having an illicit relationship, police said today.

The accused identified as 35-year-old Mahaveer, a resident of Dichaon Village in Baba Haridas Nagar, killed his daughter last night and surrendered to police this morning.
