Pak to seek FBI help in fake degree scam probe

Pakistan today said that it will seek assistance from FBI and Interpol in investigating fake degrees scam by a Karachi-based IT firm accused of making millions of dollars through an elaborate global network of fictitious universities.

Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan told media here that “substantive progress” has been made in the probe against the company Axact after a report in the New York Times this week accused the firm of running a network of websites for phoney universities as part of an elaborate scheme that generated tens of millions of dollars annually.

IPL-6 scandal: Court to pass order on charge on 29/6

A Delhi court today said it would pass on June 29 its order on framing of charges in IPL-6 spot fixing scandal case in which suspended cricketers S Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila, Ankeet Chavan and others, including underworld don Dawood Ibrahim and his aide Chhota Shakeel, are accused.

Additional Sessions Judge Neena Bansal Krishna, who was scheduled to pass the order on charges today, deferred it saying some of the defence counsel have not yet filed their written arguments in the case.

The court directed the accused to file written arguments, if any, by June 6.

Subramanian Swami to argue for Asaram

Living up to his promise made to Asaram, BJP leader and leading lawyer Subramanian Swami today moved a bail application in a trial court here and will be arguing for the release of the self-styled godman.

Swami’s assistants appeared in the court to submit the application.

Judge Manoj Kumar Vyas allowed the application and has listed the matter for arguments on Tuesday.

“Swami himself will be coming on May 26 to argue on the bail application,” said an assistant advocate, who appeared in the court with the application.

Khurshid: Why Modi hasn’t visited any Arab nation

Countering BJP’s claim about India’s image having been bolstered during the one-year rule of Narendra Modi government, Congress leader Salman Khurshid today wondered why the Prime Minister did not make a trip to Arab countries on whom the country depends for its oil.

“Prime Minister visited the US, France, Japan, China, South Korea, Australia and several European countries in the past one year but has no time to make a visit to Arab countries from where we get supply of oil and natural gas,” Khurshid told reporters here.

Minor girl gang-raped by hospital ward boys

A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by two ward boys of a private hospital in Bansdeeh area here, police said today.

According to the victim’s complaint, she was raped by ward boys Sarvottam Chaubey and Shivam Pandey last night when she had gone to the private hospital for her mother’s treatment, they said.

An FIR has been lodged and both the ward boys have been arrested, police said, adding that investigation is underway.

MNC’s team meets Telangana CM

A team of officials from multinational company Hitachi today met Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao and expressed its willingness to partner with the state government in the areas of smart city solutions.

Through the smart city solutions initiative, the Chief Minister and general public can interact with each other and work in the areas of smart card solutions, health care and education, an official release said here.

The team met Rao here and he told them that any investor would be happy to start an industry in and around Hyderabad, it added.

Delhi Police registers 2 cases against Kumar Vishwas

Delhi Police has registered two separate cases on complaints by Delhi Commission for Women Chief Barkha Singh over alleged inappropriate tweets on her by AAP leader Kumar Vishwas and in connection with the purported misbehaviour by his supporters at a DCW press conference.

The first FIR was filed at Safdarjung Police Station in south Delhi while the second FIR was registered at IP Estate Police Station in central Delhi. Both the FIRs have been filed against unknown persons although Vishwas will be made a witness in the first case, police said today.

Pakistan criticizes Indian defence minister’s terrorism remarks

Pakistan has criticized Indian Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar’s statement that India will use terrorism to counter terrorism from other countries.

Indian media quoted Parrikar as saying on Thursday that India has to neutralize terrorists through terrorists.

Indian national security advisor Ajit Doval has however sought to play down Parrikar’s controversial comment.

Pakistan’s Adviser on National Security and Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz on Saturday expressed serious concern over the statement made by the Indian defence minister, Dawn reported.

Pakistan Rangers return two Indian bodies

Pakistan rangers on Saturday night handed over two Indian dead bodies to BSF (Border Security Force) authorities in Jammu district after recovering them from the Chenab River.

A senior police officer told IANS in winter capital Jammu Sunday, “At 9.15 p.m. yesterday Pakistan troops handed over two dead bodies from their Inayat border outpost Post to BSF personnel at our Octroi border outpost in R.S. Pura.

“Names of the deceased are Anita Chaudhary wife of Sunil Kumar resident of Kalsiyan (Tehsil Nowshera, District Rajouri) and her son Arun Kumar aged arou nd three years.

US white cop acquitted in killing of black couple

A police officer in Cleveland, Ohio, was acquitted by a judge for the shooting deaths of two unarmed suspects, both black, after police chased the victims’ car on November 2012.

After a four-week trial, Judge John P. O’Donnell on Saturday handed down the verdict in the case against white policeman Michael Brelo, 31, for the deaths of Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams.

On Novvember 29, 2012, several Cleveland police officers heard the noise coming from Russell’s car as it drove by – the sound was probably a backfire but they thought it was a gunshot and set off in pursuit of it.

Cuba allows five more foreign companies to invest in Mariel

Cuba has given the go-ahead for five more foreign companies to set up operations in the Mariel Special Development Zone, a port and trade complex aimed at luring foreign investment, officials said at an international trade symposium in this capital.

“Six companies have been approved (to date), five of them with 100 percent foreign capital,” the director of the ZEDM’s support office, Ana Teresa Igarza, was quoted as saying by Cuba’s official Prensa Latina news agency.

Muslim body to counter religious discrimination with ‘Gandhigiri’

Shaken by the incident of a Muslim MBA being denied a job in a Hindu-owned diamond export company on religious grounds, the Indian Union Muslim League announced on Saturday that it would counter the issue with “Gandhigiri”.

They said this would strengthen the communal bonds within the country’s commercial capital.

Kejriwal calls special assembly session over notification

The AAP government on Saturday decided to call a two-day special session of the Delhi assembly to discuss the Centre’s notification that stripped it of various powers.

“A special session has been called on May 26 and May 27 to discuss the Centre’s notification which has taken away power from the Delhi assembly,” the Delhi government said in a statement.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar “insulted” India’s military, defence and police personnel when he suggested that terrorists should be used to neutralise terrorists, the Congress said here on Saturday.

“Stranger than fiction. If the defence minister of this country insults the military, defence, police personnel of this country that you hire terrorists to… it just beats my logic. How do I explain this to you?” the party’s national spokesperson Tom Vadakkan said at a press conference, when asked to comment on Parrikar’s statement during a television show earlier this week.
