War on terror is war of Muslims: Jordan

Jordan on Tuesday declared that all Muslims should be engaged in the war against terrorist organisations, which seek to defame the Islamic faith.

Islam has nothing to do with terrorism and the violent practices conducted by terrorist groups which seek to tarnish the image of this faith.

Therefore, it is the duty of Muslims to fight terrorism, Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Judeh was quoted as saying by the official news agency Petra during a meeting with a US Congress delegation.

Pakistan concerned over plight of Muslim minority in Myanmar

Pakistan on Tuesday expressed serious concern for the plight of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar and called for peaceful existence of all communities in the country.

The UN General Assembly in December last year passed a resolution, showing “serious concern” over the government’s treatment of the Rohingyas and said the international community was united in promoting change in Myanmar’s treatment of its minorities.

India’s eyes not shut on Dawood, says Rajnath

India’s eyes were not shut on underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, but “some international compulsions” were hindering his extradition from Pakistan, Home Minister Rajnath Singh said on Tuesday.

Addressing a media conference at the Press Club here, Rajnath Singh asserted that the government will not tolerate anyone raising pro-Pakistan slogans, and said his Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has not wavered from its long-held stance favouring abrogation of Article 370 that guarantees special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Tuesday hailed the impact that the NDA regime has had in India during the last one year under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s steward leadership.

“The government has completed one year under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi. There was a function in Delhi where the Prime Minister launched a special channel for farmers, a first for India. Bangladesh teacher jailed for life for raping student

A court in Bangladesh on Tuesday sentenced a school teacher to life imprisonment for raping a five-year-old student.

Tanjina Ismail, judge of the fifth Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal in Dhaka, gave the sentence to 24-year-old Md Minhaz Uddin, a teacher of Holy Crescent School in Shewrapara and also fined him 200,000 taka ($2,570) for the rape on March 11 last year, bdnews24.com reported.

The parents of the child found out about the incident when she was crying in pain on her way home from school. They saw blood on her pants when undressing her.

Iran to observe red lines in n-talks: Official

A senior Iranian nuclear negotiator has stressed on observing the country’s red lines set for the nuclear talks with the world powers, saying the Islamic Republic’s nuclear programme is highly sensitive for both the country’s interests and future, a media report said on Tuesday.

“Diplomats and negotiators are obliged to comply with the guidelines and red lines set for them,” Press TV quoted Abbas Araqchi, who is also Iran’s deputy foreign minister for legal and international affairs, as saying in a TV interview on Monday night.

South Korea, US, Japan to hold talks on North Korea n-programme

Top negotiators of South Korea, the US and Japan plan to meet in Seoul on Tuesday to discuss the North Korea’s nuclear programme and ways of resuming the long-stalled six-party talks to denuclearise the Korean Peninsula.

Air France jet escorted by US fighters after chemical weapons threat

An Air France passenger jet coming from Paris was escorted by two US F-15 fighter jets to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport after an anonymous telephone threat, authorities said.

Local media reported on Monday that the unidentified caller said that the Air France plane had a chemical weapon on board.

The FBI said in a statement that the military escort was ordered as a special precautionary measure after a “telephone threat” about which it gave no details, although the agency did say that there was never any risk to the plane’s passengers, reports Efe.

Iraq shrugs off US criticism over fall of city to IS

Iraq on Monday rejected criticism by the US defense secretary that Iraqi security forces lacked the will to fight against the Islamic State (IS) militant group after the fall of the city of Ramadi.

The Iraqi media highlighted the comments of Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi who said in an interview with the BBC that he was surprised by the comments of US Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and pledged to recapture Ramadi soon.

“I’m surprised why he said that. I mean, he was very supportive of Iraq. I am sure he was fed with the wrong information,” Abadi told the BBC.

Yemen’s Houthi group says UN-sponsored talks not postponed

The UN has not declared postponement of peace talks due to be held in Geneva this week, said a senior official of Yemen’s Shia Houthi group on Monday as it was fighting a Saudi-led Arab coalition in the north and supporters of the exiled president in the south.

The UN plans to hold a conference in Geneva on May 28 that will involve Yemen’s exiled government, political factions, including the Houthi group and the Arab coalition, to restore momentum toward a political transition process. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged all Yemeni parties to engage in the talks without precondition.

Solar Impulse (Si2), the solar plane on a mission to fly around the globe without a drop of fuel, is all set for a challenging 8,000-km journey on Tuesday, flying non-stop from Nanjing in China to Hawaii in the central Pacific, a media report said on Monday.

For Si2, which is powered by more than 17,000 solar cells installed on its 72-metre wings, it will be its greatest challenge yet, BBC reported, adding the experimental aircraft could take five-six days and nights of continuous flight to reach its destination.

Indian-origin voters in the UK played a decisive role in Prime Minister David Cameron-led Conservatives winning the elections, with one million ethnic minority votes going in his favour, a post-poll survey said.

The Conservatives won a majority as a result of one million ethnic minority votes, new research by British Future think tank has found.

Nearly 6,15,000 Indian-origin voters were expected to vote in the May 7 elections this year with many expected to switch loyalties from Opposition Labour to the Conservative party.
