Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday criticised Rahul Gandhi for alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was taking economic lessons from his predecessor Dr. Manmohan Singh and said the Congress vice president must check his facts before speaking.

Naidu said despite economic intellectuals being part of the former UPA regime the growth rate had drastically come down.

“Growth was 8.4 percent during Vajpayee ji’s regime, intellectuals like Manmohan ji, Montek Singh [Ahluwalia] ji and Chidamabaram ji brought it down successfully to 4.8 percent,” he said.

Pak PM Sharif, brother acquitted in Ittefaq Foundries case

A Rawalpindi court has reportedly acquitted Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and the Sharif family in the Ittefaq Foundries case.

The accountability court judge Sohail Nasir rejected the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) request to reopen probe into the case and cleared all members of the Sharif family, reported The Express Tribune.

The court noted in its ruling that the case was based on political revenge and that there was no dispute between the Sharif family and the National Bank.

Road transport, shipping sector will boost GDP growth in two years, says Gadkari

Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Thursday said that road transport and shipping sectors would contribute to the country’s GDP growth in two years.

“The road transport and shipping sectors would contribute two percent and even more to GDP growth of the country in two years,” said Gadkari while launching e-books of his ministry here on the completion of one year of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA Government.

“Moreover, these sectors would generate nearly 25 lakh new jobs in the coming year,” he added.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday said Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi is still learning politics, adding that his recent diatribes against the government are an attempt to ensure that he remains relevant.

“He presents himself as student of politics, he must be taking lessons. So, he feels everyone is taking lessons from each other,” said BJP spokesperson Nalin Kohli .

Kohli further said that no development has taken place in Amethi, the parliamentary constituency of Rahul Gandhi, in the last ten years.

OROP scheme: Khurshid questions delay on Govt.’s part

Congress leader and former external affairs minister Salman Khurshid on Thursday questioned the delay on the part of the BJP-led NDA Government in passing the ‘One Rank, One Pension’ scheme.

IS vows to destroy Palmyra statues but not site

An Islamic State (IS) commander in Palmyra has claimed the fanatical group will demolish “idolatrous” statues at the ancient Syrian city but will preserve the Unesco World Heritage archaeological site.

“Concerning the historic city, we will preserve it and it will not suffer damage, God willing,” Abu Laith al-Saoudy told rebel radio station Alwan FM in an interview.

“But what we will do is pulverise statues that miscreants used to pray to. As for the historic monuments, we will not touch them with our bulldozers as some tend to believe.”

India monitoring Chinese Navy’s activities: Naval chief

Indian Navy chief Admiral R.K. Dhowan on Thursday said India was “closely monitoring” the activities of the Chinese Navy.

“Chinese naval activities are being closely monitored. Chinese Navy ships have been present in the Indian Ocean since 2008. Some submarines are also there,” Dhowan told reporters after the Naval Commander’s conference here.

“Our belief is that the responsibility of protecting Indian Ocean and our coastline lies with the navy. Our ships, aircraft carriers are always on alert so that our security is maintained,” he said.

India’s Sania Mirza and her partner Brazilian Bruno Soares crashed out of the French Open after losing in the first round of the mixed doubles match here on Thursday.

Germany’s Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Dutchman Jean-Julien Rojer stunned the top-seeded Indo-Brazilian pair 6-2, 6-2 to enter the second round of the tournament.

Groenefeld-Rojer showed their dominance right from the word go, winning the first set 6-2 in a one-sided affair.

Man executed in China for rape of 26 minors

A man in China’s Gansu province was executed on Thursday for the rape and sexual abuse of 26 children, the Supreme People’s Court (SPC) said.

Li Jishun, a former primary school teacher, was put to death by the Intermediate People’s Court of Tianshui City after the SPC approved the death penalty, Xinhua news agency reported.

Li was found by the SPC to have raped or sexually abused 26 girls aged 4-11 when he was a teacher from 2011 to 2012. He took advantage of those who were both childish and timid and committed his acts in dormitories or classrooms.

Hurriyat says will oppose creation of ‘Israel-type settlements’ in Kashmir

Hardline Hurriyat Conference, led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani, today claimed that Jammu and Kashmir government had earmarked land for rehabilitating migrant Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley and said it would oppose any such attempt to create “Israel-type settlements”.

Hurriyat has always welcomed the return of Kashmiri Pandits and not a single Kashmiri Muslim was against their rehabilitation, a Hurriyat spokesman said here.

“But the Indian policy makers want to implement Israel-type plan which has been tried in Palestine. We will not allow it to happen,” he said.

Hindu woman sent to Nari Niketan for her intention to marry a Muslim

Ms. Kanchan Verma, a school teacher was sent to Nari Niketan in Amroha district on 27th April under section 151 (Breach of Peace). She wanted to marry a Muslim Naser Ali. The couple was produced before the Sub Divisional Magistrate of Dhanaura who sent Ali to Judicial Custody and Kanchan Verma to Nari Niketan until further order. Ali was released on bail later. Ms. Kanchan Verma filed a petition in High Court with a plea to seek her release. In her petition she complaint of habeas corpus and restrictions on her from attending school.

Saudi-led coalition airstrikes kill 40 in barracks in Sanaa

At least 40 people died and hundreds were injured in six airstrikes by the Saudi-led coalition against Special Security Forces barracks, controlled by Houthi rebels, in the center of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa.

Houthi sources told Efe on Wednesday that coalition strikes have also destroyed the military port and brigade headquarters of the Coastal Forces in the city of al-Hudayda (Red Sea coast), in the hands of Houthis, destroying a Yemeni military vessel and damaging another, but so far it is unknown whether there are casualties.

Tripura lifts AFSPA as insurgency declines

In a landmark decision, the Tripura state government has decided to withdraw the controversial Armed Forces Special Power Act (AFSPA) from the remaining areas of the state.

As per reports, the latest half-yearly review by the police found no need to extend the Act any further.

The state will now move the Union Home Ministry for formal withdrawal of AFSPA.

The Act was implemented in 40 police station areas of the state in February, 1997. With declining insurgency, the administration, in June 2013 had earlier withdrawn the Act from nine police stations. (ANI)

No plans to turn BRICS into military alliance: Russia

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said on Wednesday that there was no plan to turn the BRICS grouping into a military alliance.

The group is “driven by clearly understood national interests” and the desire to “implement these interests through joint actions,” Ryabkov said in an interview with Rossiya-24 television channel, adding that the BRICS member states are not trying to pursue political development with the mechanism.
