Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar on Friday praised Bangladesh for its active role against militants in the state using its territory, saying that India’s neighbour has played a vital role in returning peace.

Sarkar said this after announcing the repeal of the controversial Armed Force Special Power Act from the state.

85,000 flee Ramadi since IS capture: United Nations

Around 85,000 people have fled Ramadi since the Islamic State group captured the Iraqi provincial capital two weeks ago, the UN said today, warning that Iraqi authorities were blocking many of the displaced from reaching safety.

The IS jihadists seized the Iraqi city, the capital of Iraq’s largest province Anbar, on May 17, marking their most significant victory since mid-2014.

‘Iran won’t discuss military sites’ inspection in nuclear talks’

Iran will not discuss the issue of inspection of its military sites in the ongoing nuclear talks with the world powers, Iran’s senior nuclear negotiator Abbas Araqchi said.

Iranian negotiators are committed to follow the “decisive guideline” of the Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who recently rejected calls for the inspection of Iran’s military sites as part of the final nuclear deal, Araqchi said on Friday

The guideline would also not allow interviews with the country’s nuclear scientists, Xinhua reported.

Jayalalithaa to contest June 27 by-election

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa will contest the by-elections for the Radhakrishnan Nagar assembly constituency, slated for June 27, the AIADMK party said on Friday.

In a statement here, the AIADMK said Jayalalithaa has been nominated to contest from Radhakrishnan Nagar.

With the major opposition party DMK deciding to keep away from the contest, it is going to be a cake-walk for Jayalalithaa, who recently returned as chief minister.

Political parties like the Congress and others are yet to take a decision on the issue.

Saudi-led air strikes kill 40 Houthi gunmen in Yemen

Up to 40 members of the Shia Houthi group were killed during two days of intensified Saudi-led air strikes against Houthi-controlled positions in Yemen’s southern port city of Aden, the city’s deputy governor told Xinhua news agency on Friday.

“During the past two days, warplanes of the Saudi-led coalition helped the anti-Houthi fighters on ground and destroyed several Houthi-controlled positions and buildings near Aden’s northern entrance and in Khormaksar district,” said Aden’s Deputy Governor Naif Bakry.

A war of words broke out on Friday between Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi and union HRD Minister Smriti Irani on Twitter over IIT-Madras’s censure of a students’ group for criticising the Narendra Modi government.

Within minutes of Rahul Gandhi condemning the move to censure the IIT students’ group on the micro-blogging site Twitter, Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Irani threw an open challenge to him. “Next time fight ur battles ur self don’t hide behind NSUI. Aadhar not compulsory for voting: Election Commission

The Election Commission of India on Friday said it has made it clear that Aadhaar number is not mandatory for exercising the right to cast votes.

In order to avoid confusion among electors and the electoral machinery, the poll panel has issued necessary instructions to the chief electoral officers of states and union territories specifying that furnishing of Aadhaar number by electors is not mandatory and is only optional, an official release said here.

IS targets young Australian women for new recruits

Victoria’s anti-terrorism taskforce on Friday said women were the new targets for recruitment in the Islamic State militant group as they are being offered marriage, a lavish lifestyle and security while in the Middle East.

More than a dozen young Australian women have attempted to join IS strongholds in the Middle East over the last two months, Xinhua reported.

Five of the known defectors have successfully travelled to Syria, while four made it to Turkey before they were intercepted by authorities.

Will take time to clear Congress’ mess: Rajnath

The government today accused the Congress of levelling baseless allegations, saying that party made “such a mess” during its rule which “cannot be cleared” in just one year.

Won’t tolerate pro-Pakistan activities in J-K: Rajnath

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today said pro-Pakistan activities would be not be tolerated in Jammu and Kashmir even as he noted that the ruling PDP-BJP alliance in the state was doing well in the desired direction.

“We can tolerate everything, but not pro-Pakistan slogans and hoisting of Pakistani flags on Indian territory. Such persons have their place in jails,” he warned.

He said that “the more we try to bring bilateral relations to normal, the more Pakistan tries to disrupt them by unabashed disregard of the ceasefire”.

90k Indian students apply for US visa, 4k get it

The number of student visa applications for the United States has registered a 60 per cent increase this year with a whopping 90,000 applicants, of whom only about 4,000 could make the cut.

According to an official statement, around 4,000 students managed to get student visa which saw over 90,000 applicants, a number which doubled at the US embassy and consulates, especially in Mumbai and Hyderabad, over the last 12 months.

US Defence Secretary Carter to visit Vizag port

US Defence Secretary Ashton Carter will visit Visakhapatnam port during his maiden trip to India early next month, indicating the significance the Pentagon attaches to India’s modernisation of its navy.

In fact, Vizag would be his first stop in India, Carter told reporters travelling with him on his Asia-Pacific trip that also takes him to Singapore and Vietnam.

The Defence Secretary described Vizag as a “major naval port” which is also the headquarters of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Naval Command.

Amnesty International demands J&K Govt. to ban use of pellet guns against protesters

Amnesty International has demanded the Govt. of Jammu and Kashmir to prohibit the use of pellet-firing shotguns in policing demonstrations stating that these weapons not accurate and indiscriminate.

In an incident of pellet firing short guns a 16-year-old young man Hamid Nazir Bhat was seriously injured and lost his eye sight of his one eye. He is a resident of Palhalan area of north-western Baramulla district.
