Police may approach court seeking lie detector test on Tharoor

Investigators probing the mysterious death of Sunanda Pushkar may move a local court seeking lie detector test on her husband and Congress MP Shashi Tharoor.

Six persons including three “prime witnesses” in the case were already put through lie detector (polygraph) test and sources indicated that the police may go for carrying out the test on Tharoor.

When asked about it, Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi said, he was not aware of any such move, but said it was upto the investigating officer to do what he deemed fit.

PM expresses sadness over Indonesia plane crash

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed sadness over an Indonesian plane crash in which 113 people are feared to have been killed.

“News of the plane crash in Indonesia is deeply unfortunate. My thoughts are with the families of the deceased and prayers with those injured,” the prime minister said.

All 113 people on board a Hercules C-130 military cargo aircraft were feared killed when the military plane crashed into a residential area in Medan city on Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Tuesday, media reported.

Kejriwal says Modi ‘bullying’ AAP government

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday hit out at the “gundagardi” (bullying) of the Narendra Modi government, which he said was preventing his government from doing its work in the national capital.

He attacked Modi on various fronts, ranging from the black money issue to the tussle between the Aam Aadmi Party government and the central government over the posting of officials in the Delhi government and the Anti-Corruption Branch.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday launched a blistering attack on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA Government, saying the whole world knows that the former is not letting the AAP Government work in the capital.
“Today, the Delhi Government has two Home Secretaries, one is Narendra Modi ji’s Home Secretary, the other is the Delhi Government’s. Never before has it happened that a party which lost the elections so badly, which got just three out of 70 seats, has both the Home Secretary and the ACB Chief,” said Kejriwal.

Telangana CM skips governor’s banquet for president

Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Tuesday stayed away from the state banquet hosted by the governor in honour of President Pranab Mukherjee.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Kadiam Srihari, and ministers from the two states attended the banquet hosted by Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan at Raj Bhavan.

KCR, as Telangana chief minister is popularly known, along with the governor, had received the president when he arrived here on Monday on southern sojourn for 10 days.

Delhi assembly demands action against Tytler in 1984 riot case

The Delhi assembly on Tuesday strongly condemned the killing of Sikhs in the national capital during the 1984 riots and passed a resolution asking the central government to register an FIR against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler in a riot case.

On the occasion, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced legal aid to the survivors of the carnage.

Petrol prices cut by 31 paise, diesel 71 paise

Petrol prices were today cut by 31 paise per litre and diesel by 71 paise a litre in line with fall in international oil rates and rupee appreciation.

The cut in petrol prices comes on back of three successive increases since May, while this is the second reduction in diesel rates this month.

Petrol in Delhi will cost Rs 66.62 per litre from tomorrow instead of Rs 66.93 at present. A litre of diesel will cost Rs 50.22 per litre as against Rs 50.93 earlier, Indian Oil Corp (IOC), the nation’s largest oil company, said.

AAP has become ‘Khaas Aadmi Party’: Maken

Congress leader Ajay Maken on Tuesday slammed the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi Government for going back on its pre-poll promises and said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has now become a ‘Khaas Aadmi Party’.

“What we are seeing is that AAP is destroying all pre-poll promises. It is no longer an Aam Aadmi Party, it has become ‘Khap’ now, which is ‘ Khaas Aadmi Party’. AAP promised that they’ll be the lowest VAT regime but in very first Budget session, they’ve increased it,” Maken told ANI.

Govt to chalk out plan to check radicalisation of Kashmiri youth

Alarmed by reports of growing radicalisation of Kashmiri youth, the government would soon chalk out a plan to thwart the designs of terror groups like ISIS to swell their ranks by indoctrinating them to choose the path of militancy.

In an internal communication, Home Secretary L C Goyal has entrusted this task to Special Secretary (Internal Security) Ashok Prasad, who has served as Director General of Police in the state.

The Home Secretary has asked for an urgent plan to prevent such radicalisation in the state.

Scientist identify first-ever likely treatments for deadly ‘MERS’

Scientists have identified the first-ever possible treatments for deadly virus Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS).

University of Maryland School of Medicine and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc., scientists have found and validated two therapeutics that show early promise in preventing and treating the disease, which can cause severe respiratory symptoms, and has a death rate of 40 percent.

These therapeutics are the first to succeed in protecting and treating animal models of the MERS virus.

Pakistan heatwave toll crosses 1,330 mark

A week-long spell of heatwave in Karachi has come to an end, with the provincial authorities putting the figure of those affected by heatstroke at 100,000 in the Pakistani port city only and the toll at over 1,330 in Sindh province.

At least 26 more died in the city and two other districts on Monday, taking the toll to 1,332 — 1,234 in Karachi and 98 in other districts of Sindh — since June 20, when the punishing heatwave gripped the province, Dawn reported.

Egyptian president pledges stronger anti-terror laws

Egypt is determined to amend laws with the aim of achieving justice as soon as possible, President Abdel Fattah El Sisi said on Tuesday.

Attending the funeral ceremony of Egypt’s prosecutor general Hisham Barakat, who died after a bomb attack on his motorcade on Monday, Sisi said the prosecutor general was Egypt’s voice that cannot be silenced, state-run MENA news agency reported.

He further vowed to take revenge on the killers of Barakat.

“Prompt justice is shackled by laws,” he said, adding that such laws will be amended to achieve justice as soon as possible.

Iran, US start key n-talks on D-day

The contentious nuclear talks between Iran and the P5+1 group of world powers resumed here on Tuesday, the last day of the self-imposed deadline by the participants, following the arrival of Iranian chief negotiator Mohammad Javad Zarif in the Austrian capital.

Zarif met US Secretary of State John Kerry at the Palais Coburg Hotel, Iran’s official news agency IRNA reported.

Both foreign ministers held their last round of talks on Sunday evening.

IS crucifies five people for not fasting during Ramadan

The Islamic State (IS) has crucified five people in northeastern Syria for not fasting during the holy Islamic month of Ramadan, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) director Rami Abderrahman told EFE news agency on Tuesday.

The victims were brutalised on Monday in al-Mayadin city, where their bodies were left near the IS police headquarters with placards around their necks reading “crucified all day and flogged 70 times for breaking the fast of Ramadan”, the activist told EFE by telephone.

TDP legislator gets bail in cash-for-vote scam

After remaining behind bars for a month in the cash-for-vote case, TDP legislator A. Revanth Reddy will be free as the Hyderabad High Court on Tuesday granted him bail.

The court also ordered the release of two other accused, Sebastian Harry and Uday Simha, on bail.

Justice Raja Elango, who had reserved his order last week, pronounced it on Tuesday.

Revanth was given conditional bail on a personal bond of Rs.5 lakh and two sureties.

New Rs.100 notes to carry ascending numbers

The Reserve Bank Of India (RBI) has recently issued new Rs.100 currency notes in the Mahatma Gandhi Series-2005 with a new numbering pattern, an official statement said.

The numerals, henceforth, in both the number panels of these new currency notes will be in ascending size from left to right. However, the prefix, the first three alphanumeric characters will remain constant in size, the RBI said.

This is a new visible security feature in the bank notes to enable public identify and distinguish it from a counterfeit one.

Madhya Pradesh BJP President Nandkumar Chouhan on Tuesday slammed the ‘dirty politics’ over the deaths of the Vyapam scam accused and said his party was opposed to the politicization of the issue.

“It was being publicized that 44 people, who were accused by the SIT, have died and it is being politicized. We have kept this issue in front of the SIT. I am announcing the facts in front of you. On 7 July 2013, before the filing of the FIR, 11 people had died. And 14 people died after the filing of the FIR,” said Chouhan.

Sadananda Gowda indicates scrapping of Section 377

Union Law Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda has reportedly indicated that India could move towards abolishing Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which criminalises ‘unnatural sex’.

Gowda’s statement came following U.S. Supreme Court’s historic decision last week declaring same-sex marriages legal.

According to reports, Gowda said that the decision will however be taken after widespread consultations and taking all views into account. (ANI)

President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday extended his congratulations to shuttlers Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa after they won the 2015 Canada Open badminton title.

The official twitter account of the Rashtrapati Bhavan shared his congratulations.

“Heartiest congratulations to Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa on winning women’s doubles title in Canada Open #President Mukherjee,” it posted.

Jwala and Ashwini clinched the Canada Open title after beating top pair Eefje Muskens and Selena Piek in their women’s doubles event in Calgary.

The counting for the RK Nagar by-polls, which recorded a poll percentage of 74.4 percent, began on Tuesday morning.

Workers of the AIADMK gathered outside Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa’s residence, with her supporters anticipating her victory.

The RK Nagar seat fell vacant following the resignation of P. Vetrivel.

The DMK, PMK and VCK have boycotted the by-election for various reasons.

The local administration of Shimla has been told to provide within 10 days information about the land purchase by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi’s daughter Priyanka Vadra near this popular hill station, the Himachal Pradesh Information Commission has ruled.

“Provide information about Priyanka Vadra’s land deal at Mashobra (near Shimla) within 10 days to an RTI activist. The decision to impose penalty on the officials who failed to provide information within stipulated timeframe would be decided on July 23,” the commission said on Monday.

Rajnath Singh to review security of Amarnath Yatra

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh will arrive here on Wednesday on a two-day visit to review the security arrangements for Amarnath Yatra and offer prayers at the Himalayan cave shrine on July 2.

The home minister will review the security arrangements for this year’s Amarnath Yatra along with Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed and senior officials of state and central security forces on Wednesday, official sources here told IANS.

“He will also be part of the first batch of devotees to visit the Holy Amarnath Shrine on July 2,” a senior state government official said.

Moderate intensity earthquake jolts Kashmir

A moderate intensity earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale shook the Kashmir valley in the early hours of Tuesday.

“A moderate intensity earthquake occurred at 3.40 a.m. today,” an official of the local MET department here told IANS.

“The magnitude of the earthquake was 5.5 on the Richter scale. The epicentre of the earthquake was in Hindukush mountain range of Afghanistan.”

The tremors were felt when Muslims had just finished their pre-dawn meal to begin the day’s fast on the 12th day of the holy month of Ramadan.

No loss of life or property was reported.
