President’s trip to Sweden a ‘landmark visit’: Navtej Sarna

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Secretary (West) Navtej Sarna on Tuesday hailed President Pranab Mukherjee’s maiden trip to Sweden as a landmark visit.

“It has been a landmark visit, first by the President of India to Sweden. The President had detailed discussion with Prime Minister of Sweden; signed agreements including one on MSMEs and cooperation on sustainable urbanization,” Sarna told ANI.

“The electronic visa for tourists for Sweden has also been announced,” he added.

Pakistani smugglers carrying heroin, arms arrested in Amritsar

Four smugglers, including two Pakistani nationals, were arrested by the counter intelligence wing of the Amritsar police on Tuesday.

Their arrest yielded 2.5 kg heroin, one Swift car and a Bullet motorcycle, among other things.

“2.5Kg heroine, one revolver, 315 bore rifle and Rs 65 lakh were recovered,” said Gurinderpal S Nagra, Inspector, Counter Intelligence. (ANI)

US invites Cuba to adopt more open market

The US Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade Stefan Selig has invited Cuba to open its market and make reforms as part of the process of normalisation with the US at the inauguration of a conference on the island’s economic future.

Selig said if Cuba opens its economy and begins the necessary reforms it will be able to get to the level of other Latin American nations like Chile, Colombia and Peru, who are experiencing economic growth and modernisation.

Mukherjee announces e-tourist visas for Swedish nationals

President Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday announced e-tourist visas for all Swedish nationals during an interaction with business leaders from India and Sweden in Stockholm.

Mukherjee, who is on a state visit to Sweden, assured the Swedish CEOs that the Indian government is “responsive to industry and investors”.

“It is creating an appropriate atmosphere in the country to promote investment and manufacturing. A constant dialogue between investors and officials will help at the arrival of solutions to specific problems,” he said.

Kiwis record 199-run win over England

New Zealand scored a satisfying 199-run win over England on Tuesday at Headingley, drawing the two- Test series at 1-1.

Needing 455 to win, England were bowled out for 255 an hour after tea break, the BBC reported.

Alastair Cook scored 56 and Jos Buttler clocked 73 runs, but the home side failed to recover from losing 4-15 in the first hour.

The Congress on Tuesday filed a complaint with the Election Commission, alleging that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had not given “true and correct account” of election expenses in Lok Sabha polls to Varanasi seat and sought his disqualification as a MP.

The complaint filed by Congress legal and human rights department secretary K.C. Mittal on behalf of local party leaders Rajesh Mishra, a former MP, and Varanasi party chief Praja Nath Sharma, alleged that Modi had violated the provisions of Representation of People Act.

UN chief warns of setbacks in tackling Ebola

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon has applauded the progress made in fighting Ebola and warned of possible setbacks in case of lapse in vigilance, media reported on Wednesday.

“We have made great strides towards bringing the outbreak under control. Liberia was declared Ebola-free on May 9, after 42 days with no cases,” he said at the General Assembly Informal Plenary on Ebola held here on Tuesday, Xinhua news agency reported.

VHP leader Sadhvi Prachi visited the communal violence hit Atali village here even as tension prevailed in the area.

Sadhvi’s visit last night comes in wake of violent clash between two communities on May 25 over the construction of a religious structure which left five persons injured and over 20 houses burnt.

Pakistan on Tuesday nominated former captain Zaheer Abbas to become president of the International Cricket Council after the game’s world governing body said it was seeking distinguished ex-cricketers.

The announcement comes the day after former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Najam Sethi withdrew his candidacy in response to the ICC’s decision the post would only be open to leading former players from July 2016.

Abbas, who was principal advisor to Sethi at the PCB, played 78 Tests and 62 one-day internationals for Pakistan in a distinguished career.

Delhi Govt. finds Maggi samples unsafe, warns of legal action

Delhi Health Minister Satyendra Jain on Tuesday said legal action will be initiated after 10 out of 13 samples of Maggi noodles from around the National Capital Region were tested and found unsafe.

“Legal action will be taken and more samples will be tested,” Jain, who is scheduled to meet Nestle officials tomorrow, told ANI.

US drone strike kills 10 pro-Hadi militiamen in Yemen

At least 10 tribal militiamen loyal to Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi were killed by a US drone strike in northern Yemen, militias representatives said on Tuesday.

The militants from the Popular Resistance, a militia that opposes the Shia Houthi rebel movement, were travelling in three vehicles when they were bombed in the region between the provinces of Saada and al-Juf.

It was not known whether the drone attack was conducted by mistake, as Washington has consistently expressed support for Hadi and the forces that support him, which include the Popular Resistance.

A New York-based think tank has relocated controversial Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen to “safety” in the US amid death threats from Islamist radicals, according to a press release.

US passenger jet evacuated over bomb threat

An American Airlines passenger liner was evacuated in the US city of Philadelphia on Tuesday morning, media reported.

A bomb squad from the Philadelphia Police Department investigated the airplane at Philadelphia International Airport, CBS reported.
