US man sentenced for attempting to join IS

A 24-year-old US man was sentenced to 82 months in prison for attempting to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State (IS) militant group.

According to an official Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) statement, Michael Todd Wolfe aka Faruq, of Austin, Texas, was sentenced on Friday by US District Court Judge Sam Sparks to serve 82 months in federal prison for attempting to provide material support to the designated foreign terrorist organisation.

UK’s Princess Charlotte to be christened on July 5

Princess Charlotte, the daughter of Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge, will be christened on July 5.

A Kensington Palace statement quoted by the BBC, said the christening will take place at St Mary Magdalene Church at the Queen’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

The princess was born on May 2 at St Mary’s Hospital in London, weighing 8lb 3oz (3.7kg).

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, will conduct the baptism, and described it as an extraordinary honour and privilege to help welcome the princess into the family of the church.

China calls for political settlement of Ukraine crisis

China on Saturday called on parties concerned to press ahead with political settlement of the Ukraine crisis in order to achieve peace and tranquillity in Ukraine at an early date, media reported.

Liu Jieyi, China’s permanent representative to the UN, made the call at a Security Council meeting on Ukraine, saying China believes that dialogue and consultation is the only solution to the Ukraine issue, Xinhua news agency reported.

Former IB chief appointed special envoy on terrorism

Former Intelligence Bureau director Syed Asif Ibrahim was on Friday appointed as “special envoy for counter-terrorism and extremism”, an official statement said.

He will be in the National Security Council secretariat, in the rank of secretary to the government of India for a period of three years or until further orders, an official statement said.

According to government officials, Ibrahim’s role will be to help the government in evolving strategies to deal with radicalisation of youth specially with growing influence of terror groups like the Islamic State.

Former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi today alleged threat to his life after a liquor bottle was found under a plant at his heavily guarded residence here.

Some media persons, who had assembled at his residence to meet Hindustani Awam Morcha leaders, noticed a liquor bottle under a plant in the open.

Pakistan hikes defence budget by 11 per cent

Pakistan government today hiked its defence spending from Rs 700 billion to Rs 780 billion, an 11 per cent increase from the previous fiscal, to meet the military and security needs as it battles Taliban insurgency in northwest.

The increase in the defence budget was made as part of the annual budget.

Finance Minister Ishaq Dar presented budget for the fiscal year 2015-16 (FY2015-16), showing a total outlay of Rs 4.313 trillion, which is 9.1 per cent higher than Rs 3.9 trillion of the outgoing fiscal ending on June 30.

Most Kashmir ‘half-widows’ are vulnerable: Report

Kashmir’s ‘half-widows” — whose husbands have disappeared — are exposed to various gender and economic vulnerabilities, a report launched here on Friday said.

The report, “Vulnerabilities of half-widows of Jammu and Kashmir and the role of Judiciary, Civil Society and Community”, has been compiled by members of an NGO, Aman Trust.

The report presented the multiple dimensions of gender and economic vulnerabilities faced by the women whose husbands have disappeared without it being clear if they were alive or dead.

Failing to translate a good start into a productive end, India’s Harinder Pal Sandhu went down to the local challenger and second seed Campbell Grayson in four games in the quarter-final of the NZ International Classic 2015 squash tournament here on Friday.

The sixth seeded Sandhu led 9-7 in the first game, but Grayson caught up to square scores. The Indian, under pressure, hit two shots into the tin to give away the game.

Eight of 10 Malala attack suspects were acquitted, confirms police

Eight of the 10 militants reportedly jailed for their role in the 2012 attack on Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai have been freed, a Pakistani daily reported on Friday citing police.

“An anti-terrorism court had sentenced two attackers, Isarur Rehman and Izharullah, to life imprisonment, the rest of the eight alleged attackers Shaukat, Irfan, Suleman, Bilal, Zafar Ali, Arafat, Ikran and Adnan were set free,” The Express Tribune quoted regional police officer of Maland division Azad Khan as saying.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday described Narendra Modi as “not a good prime minister”, and said he cannot be compared with Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi.

Kejriwal told NDTV in an interview that Modi was using Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung to create obstacles for his Aam Aadmi Party government to avenge the Bharatiya Janata Party’s rout in the February elections in Delhi.

“He (Modi) is taking revenge against the people and the Aam Aadmi Party because of the loss (in Delhi)… He cannot be a good prime minister,” Kejriwal said.

Geelani supporters wave Pak flags outside his residence

Supporters of Hurriyat hardliner Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Friday waved Pakistani flags outside his residence in Jammu and Kashmir’s Hyderpora.

The incident comes after Geelani refused to owe allegiance to India even as he applied for a passport here.

“By birth I am not Indian,” Geelani said as he exited from the Passport Seva Kendra in Srinagar.

The vacation bench of Justice Prafulla C. Delhi Metro has received its first driver-less train from Korea equipped with several advanced features and is expected to be operational by the year end of next year.

According to reports, these new trains have undergone significant technological and eco-friendly upgrades. To increase the comfort of passengers, many features have been added.

The trains will be more energy efficient than the earlier trains because of improved design features such as better regeneration of energy during braking, energy efficient sub systems like LED lighting and air conditioning systems.

Netherlands PM Rutte arrives in India

Prime Minister of The Netherlands Mark Rutte arrived here last night on a two-day visit to India.

During his visit, Rutte will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and will hold delegation level talks today.
