Andhra, Telangana governor meets Mukherjee, Rajnath

Amid tension between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana over the alleged phone-tapping and cash-for-vote scam, the governor of the two states E.S.L. Narasimhan on Wednesday met President Pranab Mukherjee and Home Minister Rajnath Singh.

Narasimhan is understood to have a given a report to the Centre on the latest situation in the two states in the wake of the recent developments.

The governor, who rushed to the national capital on Tuesday, declined to comment on the cash-for-vote scam or the alleged phone-tapping.

Over 217,000 apply online for DU admissions

The number of online applications to seek admission into Delhi University’s undergraduate courses reached over 217,000 on Wednesday.

“The number of online registrations till 5 p.m. was over 217,000. A total of 182,591 applicants have made the payment,” said a university official.

Since the online registrations process opened on May 28, the university has received 116,253 applications in general category.

US drone kills three Al Qaeda members in Yemen

Three members of the Yemen-based Al Qaeda branch were killed in a US drone strike in Yemen’s southeastern province of Hadramout, an official said on Wednesday.

“The US drone pounded two motorcycles with four missiles in the coastal city of Mukalla, Hadramout’s provincial capital, killing three terrorists including a commander,” the official told Xinhua.

The strike took place on Tuesday night in Mukalla city where the Al Qaeda has a large presence and has taken control of several key government facilities during the past few months.

‘Regrettable that Indian politicians take pride in interference’

Pakistan Army Chief Gen. Raheel Sharif has taken serious note of the recent hostile Indian rhetoric coupled with covert and overt actions to destabilise Pakistan.

Gen. Even as voices emerged that the Indian Army operation against terrorists on the Myanmar side of the border contained a hidden message to Pakistan, experts said on Wednesday the scenario may not be the same on the Western border even though India has the capability to retaliate if provoked.

Rs 6 lakh compensation for HIV patient

In a relief to an HIV patient, whose health deteriorated while serving prison term, Madras High Court ordered government to pay him Rs six lakh compensation.

Justice S Nagamuthu before whom the case came up, pointed out that the court had already awarded the patient Rs 1.5 lakh compensation in an interim order and said it should be given to the victim within a week. The balance of Rs 4.5 lakh could be settled by second week of August.

AP takes feud with Telangana to Centre

The Andhra Pradesh government today decided to seek Centre’s intervention in asking the Governor to exercise his powers in the common capital of Hyderabad with Telangana as it accused the dispensation in the newly-formed state of tapping phones of its ministers, MPs and officers.

“Tapping charges made by AP CM serious matter”

Government put its weight behind its ally and TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu on unauthorised phone tapping charges made by him and said it is a “serious matter”.

Noting that the country was governed by many states, government also had a piece of advice saying the sanctity of the office of Chief Minister needs to be respected by all.

“As Telecom Minister of the country, let me say that if he is making an allegation of unauthorised tapping of his mobile phone, it is a serious matter,” Union Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said.

TS POLYCET – 2015 results to be declared today

The results of POLYCET-2015, the entrance exam for admission into polytechnics, will be released at 11 AM on Wednesday.

Scientists will now be able to find new therapies to halt the spread of breast cancer tumour, thanks to the revolutionary discovery of the disease’s trigger.

University of Edinburgh researchers have found that blocking the signals in mice with breast cancer greatly reduces the number of secondary tumours found in the lungs.

The majority of deaths from breast cancer are caused by the tumour spreading to other parts of the body. The lung is often one of the first organs to be affected.

Kejriwal-Jung clash intensifies, Delhi Govt. transfers Home Secretary

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government on Tuesday transferred Delhi Home Secretary Dharam Pal and sent the order to Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung’s office for approval.

According to reports, Pal’s transfer comes hours after he signed a notification which appointed Joint Commissioner of Police M K Meena as the Anti-Corruption Branch’s chief.

Meena’s appointment was made by Jung, who overruled Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s choice.

Telangana ACB denies phone-tapping

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Telangana on Tuesday denied that it has tapped phone of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

ACB Director General A.K. Khan has termed as baseless reports in a section of media that the agency tapped phones of some leaders from Andhra Pradesh including the chief minister.

The ACB conduct investigations in any case in accordance with the law and in a transparent manner, he said.

Russia warns US over possible missile deployment in Europe

Russia considers possible missile deployment by the US in Europe and other regions as counterproductive, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday.

Moscow is studying the US statements on missile deployment, Lavrov said, stressing that militaristic rhetoric is “absolutely counter-productive and harmful”, Xinhua reported.

He urged the US to discuss with Russia each other’s concerns, especially on military construction, through “direct and honest” dialogues.

Key IS leader killed by Hezbollah in Lebanon

The Lebanese Shia militant party Hezbollah said a “prominent leader” of the Islamic State (IS) was killed on Tuesday in the Qalamoun region adjacent to the country’s eastern border with Syria.

“Saudi national Walid Abdel Mohsen al-Omari was killed by Hezbollah fire when the party’s long range artillery shelled a jihadi post in the Shobat al-Mahbas region on the outskirts of Ras Baalbeck town”, Xinhua reported citing al-Manar TV.

The report added that “the post was destroyed and several jihadis were killed in the shelling including al-Omari”.

White House briefing room evacuated in bomb scare

The US Secret Service interrupted the daily press conference of White House spokesperson Josh Earnest in order to temporarily evacuate the briefing room and one of the gardens of the presidential residence because of a bomb threat phoned to police that later proved to be a false alarm.

Reporters covering the press conference were moved to a street separating the White House from the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, after President Barack Obama’s spokesperson told them to leave the briefing room.
