US asks India, Pakistan to cool down after Myanmar strike

While declining comment on India’s surgical strike on militants in Myanmar, the US has asked India and Pakistan to take steps to reduce tensions and move toward resuming dialogue.

“I don’t have a comment on that specific operation,” US State Department spokesman Jeff Rathke told reporters Friday when asked if the US supported or was concerned over India’s cross border strike in Myanmar, a move that has raised hackles in Pakistan.

But “we encourage India and Pakistan to take steps to reduce tensions and to move towards resuming talks,” he said.

US 3-yr-old toddler shoots himself dead with mum`s handgun

A family was devastated after a three-year-old boy killed himself while playing with his mother’s handgun.

After finding the gun at his home near Cincinnati, the boy, identified as Marques Green, shot and fatally wounded himself in the chest, the BBC reported

In a 911 audiotape release by police in Ohio, the boy’s mother Elizabeth Green is heard screaming and saying that her son just shot himself and that she is not getting a pulse.

She is heard noting that “The gun is mine. It is in the house, I carry it in my purse, I laid it down. We just got home.”

22 killed in Andhra as vehicle falls into river

Twenty two pilgrims, including six children, were killed on Saturday when the multi utility vehicle (MUV) they were travelling in fell into Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh, police said.

The accident took place in East Godavari district when the vehicle fell off Dowleswaram bridge across the river in the early hours of the day.

The dead, all relatives, include nine women and six children. The rescue workers saved a 13-year-old child.

The victims from Achutapuram village of Visakhapatnam district were returning after a pilgrimage to Tirupati.

India captain Virat Kohli along with the team management decided to declare the first innings on their overnight score of 462/6 and put Bangladesh in to bat in the one-off cricket Test here on early Saturday morning.

South Korea President postpones US visit after MERS outbreak

South Korea President Park Geun-hye has postponed her upcoming trip to the United States owing to the outbreak of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in her country.

Park, in a telephonic conversation with US President Barack Obama, said that she hopes to reschedule her visit at the earliest possible date, Xinhua reported.

She also visited the central headquarters of MERS control in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, to take stock of the situation.

The West Bengal Assembly on Friday passed a bill amending the West Bengal Municipal Act to reduce the time period for objections against creating new civic bodies to 30 days from the existing 90 days.

The bill amends the sections 5, 6 and 9 of the act that deal with abolishing or altering the limits of a municipal area.

Over 13,000 Syrian refugees fled to Turkey in past week

Around 13,500 Syrian refugees, mostly women, children and the elderly, fled to Turkey over the past week, escaping clashes near the border, the Hurriyet newspaper reported citing the Turkish government.

Turkish authorities allowed refugees to enter between June 3 and June 10 through the Akcakale border crossing in the southeastern Turkish province of Sanliurfa, foreign ministry spokesman Tanju Bilgic said.

Tossing out food while millions starve ‘unacceptable’: Spanish queen

Queen Letizia of Spain on Friday said throwing away food at a time when more than 800 million people are suffering from starvation is “unacceptable” behaviour, Spanish news agency Efe reported.

The queen’s remarks were made during her speech at the Rome headquarters of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) after she was named as the organisation’s special ambassador for nutrition earlier on Friday.

Power tariff hiked in Delhi, AAP may challenge it in court

Come Monday, Delhi residents will have to pay more for power as the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission hiked the power tariff by up to six percent.

Consumers of BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Ltd (BYPL), which control 70 percent of Delhi’s total area, will pay six percent more.

In areas where Tata Power (TPDDL) gives electricity, the tarrif has been hiked by 4 percent. In New Delhi Municipal Council area, the charge has been increased by up to 5 percent.

Over 416,000 people need aid in Myanmar’s Rakhine State

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that three years since outbreaks of inter-communal violence in Rakhine State in Myanmar, more than 416,000 people continue to need humanitarian assistance.

This includes almost 140,000 displaced people living in dire conditions in camps and many others without citizenship in isolated villages, UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said on Friday at a daily news briefing here, Xinhua reported.

The Syrian army, supported by the Lebanese Shiite militant group Hezbollah, took control of new territories in the Syrian region of al-Qalamoun, north of Damascus and on the border with Lebanon.

Lebanese television station Al-Manar, mouthpiece of the Shiite Hezbollah group on Friday, confirmed that members of Al Nusra Front, the Syrian branch of Al Qaeda with ties to Islamic State, have retreated from the advancing forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Al Assad, Efe reported.

Chennai: Search for missing Dornier aircraft continues

The search for the missing Dornier aircraft of the Indian Coast Guard has entered its fourth day on Friday.

Fifteen ships belonging to both the Coast Guard and the Indian Navy are a part of the search mission, in addition to the advanced Boeing Poseidon P81 surveillance aircrafts, said reports.

The aircraft CG-791 was on a routine surveillance off the coast of Chennai on Monday evening when it lost contact.

MERS cases in South Korea rise to 126

Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) cases in South Korea have increased to 126 on Friday, authorities said.

Four more people tested positive for the MERS virus on Friday, Xinhua news agency reported. All of them contracted the virus from the 14th patient from Samsung Medical Centre in Seoul.

According to officials, the 14th patient, called the ‘super spreader’, has infected more than 60 people at the Samsung hospital.

Nine people have so far died because of the virus in the country.

Flood situation worsens in Assam, over three lakh hit

The flood like situation in Assam, caused by incessant rainfall, has affected over three lakh people in more than 700 villages spread across 15 districts of the state.

A Low Flood Situation alert has reportedly been issued in parts of Karimganj, Dhubri, Sivsagar and Karimganj districts by the State Disaster Management Authority for the next 24 to 48 hours.

The worst affected districts in the state are Lakhimpur and Sonitpur, where more than 50,000 people have been rendered homeless.
