Modi speaks to Sharif, Hasina, Ghani ahead of Ramadan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke by telephone to Pakistan and Bangladesh premiers, Nawaz Sharif and Sheikh Hasina, and Afghan President Ashran Ghani and conveyed to them good wishes for the holy month of Ramadan, an official statement here said on Tuesday.

“He (the prime minister) conveyed the good wishes for the holy month of Ramadan to them and their people. He expressed hope for peace, tranquility and harmony in their countries and in the region during this month of piety and prayers,” a Prime Minister’s Office release said.

Pakistan executes 12 prisoners ahead of Ramadan

At least 12 prisoners were executed on Tuesday in Pakistan before the start of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan on Friday, Efe news agency reported.

During Ramadan, a holy month for Muslims, there is a moratorium on the death penalty.

The executions took place in different prisons in Punjab province, according to prison authorities who said most of those who were hanged were convicted for murder.

Youth Congress protests against Sushma Swaraj in Pune

The Youth Congress on Tuesday staged a protest against External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj over the controversy surrounding former IPL chairman Lalit Modi.

Amit Shah to visit Bengal July 7

BJP president Amit Shah will visit West Bengal on July 7 to give impetus to the party’s membership drive in the eastern region of the country.

“Shah, along with party national general secretary Ram Lal, will arrive in West Bengal on July 7 to give impetus to our membership drive in the states of West Bengal, Assam, Odisha and Jharkhand,” state Bharatiya Janata Party chief Rahul Sinha said.

Sinha said Shah and Ram Lal will hold discussions with party representatives from the four states on ‘Maha Sampark Abhiyan’, the party’s initiative to strengthen the organisation at the grassroots.

UN reports three sex cases involving Indian peackeepers

A UN report says that Indians in its peacekeeping operations were involved three substantiated cases of sexual exploitation or abuse between 2010 and 2013.

During those four years, there was a total of 64 substantiated cases of sexual abuse by UN peacekeepers, according to the report released Friday. More than 100,000 uniformed personnel serve in UN peacekeeping operations.

71 killed in airstrikes, clashes with IS in Iraq

At least 71 people were killed on Monday in US-led coalition airstrikes and clashes between the Iraqi security forces and militants of Islamic State (IS) group in the provinces of Anbar, Nineveh and Salahudin, authorities said.

In Anbar province, the security forces and allied militias, known as Hashd Shaabi, or popular mobilisation, attacked a convoy of IS vehicles in Houran area of Iraq’s western desert and destroyed three tankers carrying fuel and two vehicles, the Iraqi ministry of defence said in a statement.

Atali Village Mosque will not be open for prayers in Ramzan

Communal riot erupted in Atali of Ballabhgarh district in Haryana on 25th May when 2000 armed men allegedly set ablaze the mosque under construction. Lalit Modi not an ‘offender’, says his lawyer

Amid the ongoing controversy over the clearance of Lalit Modi’s travel documents, the former IPL chief’s lawyer, Mehmood Abdi, on Monday said the latter is not an ‘offender’ or a fugitive and that the issue is being blown out of proportion.

“A fugitive or an offender is a legal term which is, and which cannot be used so liberally as some media friends are using. Lalit Modi is not a fugitive. Which court has declared Lalit Modi as an offender? Lalit Modi is not an offender,” said Abdi.

‘Sushma offered to quit but RSS sought she continued’

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj offered to resign almost a week before the controversy broke out over her help to former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi in getting travel documents on “humanitarian ground”, but her offer was rejected on the intervention of the RSS, informed sources said.

The sources said the news channel that on Sunday read out e-mails of a British MP concerning travel documents for Modi, had sent an e-mail to Sushma Swaraj almost a week before, seeking her response on the issue.

Shia cleric Maulana Kalb-e-Jawwad arrested in Lucknow

Shia cleric Kalb-e-Jawwad was arrested and sent to the Lakhimpur prison on Monday after he tried to lead a mob to hold a massive demonstration here, police said.

The Shia leader was leading a march from the Bada Imambara (shrine) towards Hazratganj to press for sacking of the Shia Waqf Board chairman Waseem Rizvi when he was arrested by the police.

India dare not treat Pakistan like Myanmar: Musharraf

Former Pakistani dictator Pervez Musharraf today warned India against attempting a military operation inside Pakistan, saying India “dare not” treat his country like Myanmar.

Musharraf, who ruled from 1999 to 2008, hit out at the Indian leadership over its stand on army operation in Myanmar, saying, “Pakistan is not Myanmar, and India dare not treat Pakistan as Myanmar.”

The former Pakistan president and army chief cautioned India against what he called “similar adventurism”.

UP: Examinees place money in answer sheets to secure pass marks

Examinees in Uttar Pradesh have resorted to a unique bribery method by placing currency notes in their answer sheets to pass university examination.
The matter was brought to notice when an evaluator in Agra found a currency note worth Rs 500 note in an answer sheet with a request to pass the student.

The teacher, Ravi Sinha, said it was not a new phenomenon. He said the students had pleaded for pass marks by making strange excuses in the past also.

Yoga guru Ramdev on Monday said the controversy of linking the ‘Surya Namaskar’ exercise with a particular religion was baseless.

Kapil Mishra takes oath as Delhi Law Minister

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kapil Mishra took oath as the Delhi Law Minister on Monday.
