South Korea MERS cases rise to 165

With three new confirmed cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in South Korea on Thursday, the total number of cases has risen to 165, authorities said.

The health ministry also confirmed three more deaths, taking the toll to 23, Xinhua news agency reported.

Authorities said 118 patients are under treatment and 6,729 people are in quarantine.

Several killed in US church shooting

Several people have been killed in a shooting at a historic African-American church in US’ South Carolina state, media reported on Thursday.

The shooting took place on Wednesday night at Charleston city’s Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church in the South Carolina, CNN reported.

The shooter is still at large. Police, however, have not said about the number of people been shot.

“It’s really bad. It’s a very bad scene,” pastor Thomas Dixon said.

South Korea gets new PM

South Korea’s Justice Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn was on Thursday appointed as the country’s new prime minister, media reported.

South Korean parliament, the National Assembly, endorsed the appointment of Hwang, 58, in a 156-120 vote, Yonhap news agency reported.

Former prime minister Lee Wan-koo had stepped down in late May amid bribery allegations.

The appointment follows calls from the government and the ruling party for speedy parliamentary approval of a prime minister, who would take charge in the government efforts against the rapid spread of the MERS virus.

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra: Second batch of pilgrims arrive in Almora

The second batch of pilgrims undertook the annual Kailash Mansarovar Yatra after reaching Uttarakhand’s Almora city on Wednesday, from where they will trek to Lake Mansarovar in Tibet.

The lake and the flanking Mount Kailash, which is the highest mountain in Tibet at 22,022 feet, are revered as the abode of lord Shiva.

Poonam, a pilgrim from Mumbai, said that she was extremely excited to be a part of this 54-member group.

The Congress party stepped up its protest against External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday demanding her resignation over the Lalit Modi row.

Congress activists held rallies across the country burning the effigies of Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje who also allegedly helped Modi.

Lalit Modi admitted in an interview to a local media channel that Raje also helped him in facilitating travel papers.

Nawaz Sharif cancels meeting with Zardari post latter’s anit-military remark

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has called off a meeting with the PPP co-chairperson and former president Asif Ali Zardari after the latter’s anti-military remarks, said Federal Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid.

According to Dawn News, Rashid said that Zardari should have been careful in his use of words.

He also said that the national security institution deserves respect and that it was not wise of Zardari to pass such statements.

Ministry launches book on affnity of yoga and namaaz

In order to battle the opposition from sections of Indian Muslims who have called the International Day of Yoga a “Hindutva agenda”, the ministry of AYUSH has launched a book titled “Yoga and Islam”.

The ministry said yogic postures find many similarities with the Islamic ‘namaaz’, the prayer postures.

“We faced objection from the Muslim communities over yoga. The motive behind this book is to prove that yogic postures are not different from namaaz,” said AYUSH Minister Shripad Naik here on Wednesday.

Kurdish political prisoner hanged in Iran

A Kurdish political prisoner was hanged in Iran for being an “enemy of God” and for committing “propaganda against the state”, rights groups reported on Wednesday.

Mansour Arvand was executed on Sunday in Miandoab prison in the northwest of the country, rights groups said, citing unofficial reports.

Arvand, a 39-year-old former wrestler from the northwest Iranian Kurdish city of Mahabad, was in 2011 sentenced for the capital crime of ‘Moharebeh’ or “enmity towards God’. He denied all charges.

He said once proved innocent by the court, he would be active not just in the politics of Bihar but the Centre as well.

IS car bomb attacks claim 18 lives in Yemen

The Islamic State (IS) militant group said that it carried out four car bomb attacks against the Shiite Houthi group here in Yemen. The assault killed at least 18 people and wounded dozens.

Ban Ki-moon hopes for ‘amicable’ Kashmir resolution

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon hopes Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif “will continue to engage with each other” to try to resolve the Kashmir situation “peacefully and amicably”, according to Ban’s deputy spokesperson Farhan Haq.
