Over 8,000 children in Delhi’s garment industry: NGO

A total of 8,044 children were working in garment industries in the national capital, a report said on Friday.

An NGO Save the Children’s report ‘The Hidden Workforce – A study on child labour in the garment industry in Delhi’, revealed that Okhla area in south Delhi had the highest number of employed children — 1,922.

The least number of children involved in garment-related activities was reported from Tughlakabad area.

Yoga needed for pot-bellied rich, not poor: Lalu Prasad

RJD chief Lalu Prasad on Friday said there was no need for the poor to practice Yoga and it is actually meant for those who have eaten funds of poor and became rich and super rich.

“Poor and the poorest of the poor have no need to practice Yoga because they have not accumulated fat on their bodies,” Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader said here at a party function.

The former Bihar chief minister also said even he did not need to practice Yoga.

Cash-for-vote case: TDP legislator seeks time to appear before ACB

Telugu Desam party (TDP) legislator Sandra Venkata Veeraiah on Friday sought more time to appear before Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Telangana in cash-for-vote case.

Veeraiah wrote a letter to ACB, seeking 10 day time to appear before it, citing ill-health.

Informing the ACB that he has been suffering from pain in spinal cord and right leg and doctors have advised him bed rest for 10 days, he said he had only come to know through media that a notice was issued to him by the ACB, directing him to appear before it by 5 p.m. on Friday.

Dhoni, Mustafizur fined for on-field collision

India One-Day International (ODI) skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Bangladesh pacer Mustafizur Rahman both were fined by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday following their mid-pitch collision in Thursday night’s match that the hosts won.

“Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman and India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni have been fined 50 and 75 per cent of their match fees respectively after being found guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the first ODI in Mirpur on Thursday,” the ICC said in a statement.

SC gives Sahara 18 months to pay up Rs.36,000 crore

The Supreme Court on Friday gave 18 months to Sahara to repay Rs.36,000 crore of the investors money which its two companies, SIRECL and SHFCL, had collected in 2007-08.

The bench of Justice T.S.Thakur, Justice Anil R.Dave and Justice A.K.Sikri however reiterated the court’s March 26, 2014 order saying that Sahara chief Subrata Roy and two directors will only be released from Tihar jail, where they are in judicial custody, after Rs.5,000 crore cash and a bank guarantee of like amount is deposited.

Full dress rehearsal of International Yoga Day celebrations held at Rajpath

A full-dress rehearsal of Sunday’s International Yoga Day event was held at Rajpath here on Friday morning.

Thousands of school children, members of the armed forces, National Cadet Corps (NCC), government officials and yoga enthusiasts performed prescribed asanas ahead of the main event to be held on June 21.

The main event would see the participation of over 35, 000 people.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also take part in the event and address the gathering before kickstarting it on Sunday.

Nigerians jailed for smuggling drugs into New Zealand

Four Nigerian nationals and a New Zealander have received jail terms for their involvement in an international drug smuggling ring, New Zealand Police said on Friday.

The Nigerians were jailed for terms of 15 to 18 years after being found guilty of importing and possessing methamphetamine for supply, and the New Zealander was jailed for nine years for possession of methamphetamine for supply.

MERS cases in South Korea rises to 166

South Korea on Friday reported one more death and another case of infection due to the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus, taking the toll to 24 and the total number of people contaminated to 166.

Patient 120, who tested positive on June 10, died overnight, raising the fatality rate to 14.5 percent, according to the ministry of health and welfare.

The 75-year-old man was being treated at the Samsung Medical Center here, after being infected by patient 14, who is known as “super spreader” as he has infected about 80 people, Xinhua reported.

Nitish violated poll code of conduct: Bihar BJP leader

The BJP on Thursday lodged a complaint against Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for “violating” the Model Code of Conduct for the biennial elections to the legislative council and alleged misuse of government funds and resources.

Five youth held in Bengaluru for gang-raping minor

Five youth were arrested on Thursday for the alleged gang-rape of a 15-year-old girl here, a police official said.

“The accused, an acquaintance, and his friends were arrested after the victim filed a complaint that she was sexually abused by them at a building under construction in the area,” Additional Commissioner of Police C.H. Pratap Reddy told reporters.

A case has been registered against all the accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2013.

India, Pakistan release fishermen ahead of Ramadan

India on Thursday released 88 Pakistani fishermen, while Pakistan released 113 Indians as a goodwill gesture ahead of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

India released the Pakistani fishermen following an announcement by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a source told IANS in New Delhi.

The release by Pakistan also came on a directive of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the wake of the announcement by Narenda Modi.

Russia, Saudi Arabia sign n-cooperation agreement

Both Russia and Saudi Arabia signed an inter-governmental agreement on Thursday on cooperation in nuclear energy for peaceful purposes during the International Economic Forum here.

For the first time in the history of relations between Moscow and Riyadh, both countries have laid the legal basis for activities related to nuclear energy.

The two countries will cooperate in constructing and operating nuclear power plants, maintaining the facilities, recycling radioactive material, radioisotope production for civilian use, as well as training of nuclear energy specialists.

New HIV vaccine candidate may generate immune response: Study

An experimental vaccine candidate may have the potential to stimulate the immune system to block HIV infection, according to new research.

The findings may represent a leap forward in the effort to develop a vaccine against HIV, which has so far struggled to elicit antibodies that can effectively fight off different strains of the virus, according to three papers published on Thursday in the US journals Cell and Science.

“The results are pretty spectacular,” said Dennis Burton of the Scripps Research Institute (TSRI), who led one of the studies, Xinhua reported.

MERS virus spread: One dead, one newly-infected in UAE

A MERS patient died in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, while another was discovered to be infected with the virus, a media report said.

The local health authority here said the patient, who died on Thursday, was a 65-year-old UAE national, while the other, whose nationality was not released, remains under observation, Xinhua reported, citing the local WAM news agency.

It added that the newly-infected remain under observation and isolation in line with the international standards and recommendations from the World Health Organization.

Four soldiers killed in Al-Shabaab attack in Somalia

Four soldiers were killed and six others injured in an attack by Al-Shabaab in Somalia’s Gedo region.

The offensive began after the militants attacked positions of government forces in the region’s Ged-Wayn district on Thursday, Xinhua quoted a local official as saying.

“We have managed to inflict heavy casualties among the attackers… The fighting lasted several hours. We do not know the number of their dead,” he said.

Al-Shabaab later claimed responsibility for the assault.
